Almost Blue

Post by SweetPear »

I have to say that Almost Blue has never been one of my favorite records. I listen to it once in a blue moon (no pun intended) and skip songs all over the place but the songs that I do listen to, I LOVE!
I mean, c'mon, how cool is Honey Hush?? 8)

So in light of the new reissue, how about ranking AB most to least favorite?

I have to say that I hadn't planned on tallying the results or anything like that. (But if someone wants to.....) I was just curious as to how everyone felt about the record and how it fit in relation to EC's other records.

I suppose we need to decide if it should be AB proper or with the bonuses or what.

Somebody want to start?

I don't have the new reissue, but I do like it when Elvis goes country. He always picks the best tunes to cover.

You think I'm psycho, don'tcha?

Really Branst, Honey Hush is last?

I do like the live version better though. Nothing was like hearing EC do it live in person. WOW!

I like the song a lot. I do prefer the live version over the version on the album. I really like every song on Almost Blue, "Honey Hush" is just my least favorite but it doesn't mean I dislike it.

To note, I just got this album for the first time Tuesday so my selections might change sometime down the road. I've listened to it about 5 or 6 times since Tuesday and it's really great.

This has always been a favorite record of mine - it turned me on to so much music I might not have discovered otherwise -

1. Good Year For The Roses - I like this version much more than the George Jones hit - spooky arrangement.
2. Too Far Gone - A perfect song - I like EC's version as much as the Tammy Wynette hit and the beautiful Emmylou Harris take.
3. I'm Your Toy - This one introduced me to Gram Parsons.
4. Colour of the Blues - George calls it Color of the Blues - a classic from the Mercury era George - great rendition by EC
5. Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down - Led me to re-discover Merle Haggard.
6. Sittin' And Thinkin' - Cool ass song - three G. Jones songs on this record and the two about alcoholism aren't his. Made me buy a Charlie Rich record.
7. Success - Doesn't kill me like Loretta's - still great!
8. How Much I Lied - Another fine GP tune, done well.
9. Brown To Blue - Corny but it works - I like the George Jones version better.
10. Sweet Dreams - I wish He's Got You made the record instead of this one.
11 Honey Hush - I never thought this fit that well on the record - Johnny Burnette and the Rock N' Roll trio rock harder than the attractions - and the vocals don't approach the Big Joe Turner hit.
12. Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used To Do) - I think he could have picked a better Hank Williams song (You're Gonna Change would have fit great) - like Honey Hush, it doesn't approach the original.
Everyone just needs to fuckin’ relax. Smoke more weed, the world is ending.

Seems like you two shy away from the faster numbers because you view the album as a slow record.

Honey Hush is one of my favorite songs of all time, which is why I threw it first. "Why Don't You Love Me" is quick and great- shades of Get Happy!!'s tracks.

"How Much I Lied", "I'm Your Toy", and "Sittin' and Thinkin" are simply flawless- but "Too Far Gone"? C'mon now.

I wish "Psycho", "Cry Cry Cry", or "He's Got You", or "Blues Keep Calling" made the album instead of "Too Far Gone".
