Joke in Conan O'Brien's monologue Tuesday night:
Today Michele Bachmann wished Elvis Presley a happy birthday even though today is the anniversary of his death. When told about the mistake, Bachmann said, "My apologies to not only Elvis, but the entire Costello family."

That crooning couple Elvis Costello and Diana Krall could be getting some new neighbors in their Greenwich Village building. An 880-square-foot penthouse at 101 W. 12th St. is on the market for $1.495 million. The one-bedroom co-op, with a terrace offering river views, is listed by Sabrina Seidner of Nest Seekers International.

From Jeff Bridges in Q Magazine:
"...part of the Speaking Clock tour with me, Elton, Leon Russell and Elvis Costello all playing together. It was a weird time. My wife had taken a pill because her back was hurting but she had an allergic reaction. Elvis said that the same thing had happened to his son and that we'd better get a doctor. He came and gave her some adrenaline shots before we went onstage while the rest of us were all there in the dressing room. If the doctor hadn't come, she might have died, so Elvis saved her life."

Calling Scielle - any additional details?

Last week Horseshoe Casino in Hammond announced the cancellation of chanteuse Diana Krall's Sept. 15 concert at The Venue theater space.

I contacted the publicist for The Venue, James A. Sims III, and unfortunately, he couldn't offer many more clues about the cancellation.

"Hi Phil: Thanks for your inquiry. Unfortunately, the only explanation we received was a scheduling conflict. I wish we could be more helpful. - James"

I also contacted Krall's publicity agents on behalf of her music label, Verve Music Group, which is under the umbrella of Universal Music Enterprises. However, my telephone messages and emails to Sujata Murthy and Keren Poznansky have not been returned.

Back in June, Krall also backed out of participating in the July Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, where she was supposed to perform three songs for the 75th birthday celebration event for jazz and pop music producer Tommy LiPuma, with the only explanation given being that she was rescheduling her announced tour.

Hugh Laurie Sings the Blues

Published: September 2, 2011

(extract)

Making an album is treacherous territory for Laurie: for the most part, people are suspicious of celebrity hyphenates, whether they be painter-directors, rapper-designers or actor-novelists. Laurie has also written a novel, in fact: “The Gun Seller,” published in 1996, is an odd but enjoyable cross between the international intrigue of Robert Ludlum and the mannered comedy of P. G. Wodehouse, leading to prose like “there I was, the model in diagram (c) in the chapter headed ‘Neck-Breaking: The Basics.’ ”

To produce the record, Laurie approached Joe Henry, whom he revered for his work on Solomon Burke’s “Don’t Give Up on Me.” “I did a little bit of homework,” Henry recalls, “and Elvis Costello told me in an e-mail that he had visited a set with Hugh, who had been playing piano during a break. Elvis said: ‘This guy is a musician before he’s anything else. He’s probably a better musician than an actor.’ ”

So Henry and Laurie met for coffee in Henry’s kitchen. They both knew that the track record of most actors making music ranges from dismal, craven hit-making (Don Johnson) to eccentric vanity projects (Crispin Glover). As a career move, it doesn’t even have the advantage of novelty: this past summer alone has seen debut albums from Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins. So Laurie told him the simple truth. He wanted to make the album because he loved the blues.

The resulting disc of 15 cover songs was recorded in eight days of sessions in Los Angeles, and one in New Orleans for Allen Toussaint’s horn arrangements. It features a few luminaries: Irma Thomas, Tom Jones and Laurie’s idol, Dr. John, who sings on a relaxed, sexy version of “After You’ve Gone,” with Laurie on piano. “He can be quite ornery,” Laurie says fondly, “but he was in really good form. We played for half an hour, and then he sat in the control room and told stories for a while. It was such a good day, I wanted it to end so I could have the chance to replay it in my head.”

As for himself, Laurie says, “There’s a hierarchy of piano players in New Orleans, and I’m not even ranked.” He is being modest but accurate. Still, with music, he says, he can take pleasure in the moment instead of continually berating himself for his flaws. Which is why he hopes to make another album. “Twenty years ago, I wouldn’t have dared,” he says. “Too nervous, too shy, too pessimistic. But now I’ve had a glimpse of this most wonderful existence, and crikey, it tastes good.”

Our hero features several in the Wondrous Place section of the newly opened Museum of Liverpool http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/mol/

I spotted :

His name in one of the stars which feature the city's famous names from music, theatre, writing, football, boxing etc etc

Just inside the WP there is a taster section running via a continuous video / audio loop, incongruously when EC pops up for a few seconds in SecretProfaneSugarcane mode his photo is accompanied by a few bars of 1978 style Pump it Up.

There is a mock up of a sound booth (just like NEMs in Bold St) which the visitor has the chance to pick and era and then select music from one of the artists from that era. If you pick the 1970s, EC has his own section. Alison plays whilst there are a few touchsceens to navigate - still pictures from a performance at Erics and words covering his life and times.

More bits in the Erics section and the LP sleeve from MAIT.

Even I wouldn't suggest that the museum is worth visiting for the Elvis content alone. But, and it's a big but, I would certainly say the museum is worth visiting if you are in the city or nearby, and have at least half a day to spare. Loads of interesting exhibits and a fantastic view of the World Heritage Site at the Pier Head.

Watch Your Step is used to great effect at the start of the second part of The Field Of Blood, a BBC detective drama set in 1980's Glasgow. Besides being of the time , the lyrics message is directly related to the story line. Great script, spot-on period details, nuanced performances by all concerned - one of the best things I've seen on the telly in while.

That’s one thing I try to tell people always is please don’t ever get someone’s likeness on your body if they’re still alive because you’re going to run into them and you’re going to have to show them because you’ll be so excited. They’re going to freak out and think you’re a real creep and then they’re not going to be able to get off the elevator fast enough. That’s pretty much what happened with me and Elvis Costello which sucks because now I’ll never be able to just bro out with him, you know, have dinner. I’ll be the creep with his face on my arm.

Jazz treats thanks to £27,000 grant

Monday, 19 September 2011

SHETLAND’S first ever jazz festival is taking shape after the local jazz club received a grant of £27,000 from Creative Scotland to boost the isles’ jazz scene.

The festival is to take place in late March next year and is seen by Shetland Jazz Club as the culmination of a series of concerns and projects taking place between now and spring 2012.

The start sees Australian singer Becc Sanderson fly in this week to give two performances on Friday and Saturday.

She said: “My plan is to perform my recent Edinburgh Fringe show PassionFlower in its entirety, plus tunes from the original recording that inspired the show, but didn't make it to the Fringe.

“So expect songs from Radiohead, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and myself, to Fats Waller and Stephen Sondheim. I am nothing if not eclectic....”

Supported by Chris Grieve on trombone and Kevin MacKenzie on guitar, she will play in the Bigton hall on 23 September and in the Islesburgh Community Centre the following night.

Tickets are £9 (£7 concessions) and available from the Shetland Box Office at www.shetlandboxoffice.org

http://www.beccsanderson.com/Passion-Flower

Sensual, heady, exotic. Becc Sanderson premières her new show PassionFlower at this year's Fringe. Following hot on the heels of the successful Becc Sanderson PassionFlower Lounge Tour in which she performed home concerts in people's lounges, the show stems from the title (or passiflora incaranta to give it its full Latin name!), with guaranteed medicinal qualities.

PassionFlower is an exquisite selection of original songs and re-workings with a floral theme. From Radiohead's "Last Flowers", Piaf's "La Vie En Rose" and Billy Strayhorn's "Passion Flower” to the Tom Waits-penned "The Last Rose of Summer" and Elvis Costello's “The Poisoned Rose”, every song blooms in the hothouse of Becc Sanderson's gorgeous voice. Musicians are Graeme Stephen on guitar and effects, Chris Greive on trombone/percussion, with Sanderson occasionally indulging Limone, her ukulele. Exploring cabaret and the tradition of the torch song, it is deliciously intimate, scentual and sensual, a musical and floral feast for the senses.

Jerry Scheff Autobiography
By: Elvis Australia
Source: EIN
September 25, 2011

'Way Down: Playing Bass with Elvis, Dylan, the Doors and More : The Autobiography of Jerry Scheff' is the TCB bassist's new book to be released in March 2012.

... 'In this candid and perceptive memoir of his 45-year career, bassist Jerry Scheff takes us onto Elvis' private jet, on tour with Bob Dylan, and into the studio with the Doors. A stalwart presence behind some of the greatest names of popular music, Scheff has also played with Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, the Association, Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, and Nancy Sinatra, to name just a few.

Eschewing hype, Scheff provides a behind-the-scenes perspective, from having worked sleeves rolled up, side by side, with the great artists in their factories. The book opens with the TCB band's learning of the King's death while en route to a tour date, a pivotal moment for him, the rest of the band, and the world at large. He then proceeds on a nonlinear journey that mirrors the process of true life-reflection, from his roots in San Francisco to his touring all over the world. This is a tale of a man who has truly grown a career from a genuine love of music and of his instrument, proving how following that gift can bring a person to places beyond his wildest dreams. It is an exciting inside view of the evolution and craft and work of making rock and roll - a must-have for true music craftsmen and music junkies in general'.

From Backbeat Books 256 pages - March 27, 2012 - no cover picture available as yet.

Radio 2's pause for thought at 5.45 was followed this morning by Accidents Will Happen.
Last Monday they played Peace, Love and Understanding. The second time in a couple of months that has followed PFT.

the Dj Vanessa Feltz also played I Cant Stand Up For Falling Down, Thursday or Friday of last week. Not sure if she is a fan.

On Marty Whelan's radio show on Lyric FM here in Ireland this morning a listener's comment about the Antique Roadshow tv show concluded with a request that Marty play Broken Bicycle/Junk from For The Stars. Marty , fair dues to him, said they'd ' have a look for it'. Instinctively I hope they won't find it but I seem to remember that it was, perhaps, one of the more listenable tracks on that awful album.

Are you ready? How Ole Miss gets celebrities to Hotty Toddy

When Dickie Scruggs walked up to assistant athletic director for Ole Miss Sports Productions J. Stern and asked him if he wanted actor Russell Crowe to start the Hotty Toddy chant at the football game, Stern’s response was simple — “Hell yeah.”
“Then he handed me his phone, and I was talking to Russell Crowe,” Stern said.

Stern has been working hard for 14 years to get different celebrities to ask the question all Rebel fans love to hear: “Are you ready?”

“One night Elvis Costello called my phone and asked to do the chant,” he said. “I thought it was one of my buddies joking with me, but it really was Elvis Costello. It’s unbelievable what it’s turned into. It’s still crazy to me.”

I think the answer is yes, and offer the following as evidence:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0105vt7:

" Vanessa's Word Of The Day
It's loud, but it's melancholy. Combined with "visions", it's the name Elvis Costello gave to his publishing company.....

Yes, today's word is "plangent"

I think it is fair to assume that anyone who knows the name of EC's publishing company is a fan. Heck, I know some fans who might struggle to remember that name.

Excerpt from an interview with Roger McGuinn

http://www.nodepression.com/profiles/bl ... tober-2011

“Do you still meet up with the guys from way back when?”

“Occasionally; but as I live in Orlando Florida and most of my friends are still working musicians it’s only at Festivals or in the case of Elvis Costello; hotels and airports. We had a period a couple of years ago when we kept bumping into each other as one of us was checking into and the other out of, hotels then we kept meeting in Airport lounges; no one else in the whole music industry, just Elvis Costello. I’ve known Elvis for a lot of years and we can talk for hours; or at least he can talk for hours and I listen.
