Mike writes to listserv-

> Los Lobos song (Don't Come Here No More?)

Sounds like "Bertha" (which of course is a Grateful Dead song as was
covered by Los Lobos)

Over on the Jazzfest Forum, http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/forum.php?forumid=1 , almost everyone is raving about EC's performance and blasting Dave Matthews.

SPERA's SPIN

Music writer Keith Spera's views and reviews of the 'fest
Sunday, May 01, 2005

( extract)

It allowed time to hustle over to the Sprint/Sanyo Stage, where Elvis Costello and the Imposters -- augmented by David Hidalgo of Los Lobos -- wrapped up their set in fine fashion. After a mass singalong on Smokey Robinson and The Miracles' "You Really Got a Hold On Me," Costello -- who had watched Jamie Cullum on Friday at the same stage -- eased everyone back down with "The Scarlet Tide," the final cut on his "Delivery Man" album, just acoustic guitar, fiddle and Costello's ragged glory of a voice.

OK, finally recovered enough to make some comments on the show.

We (myself and about 10 friends) were situated about halfway back. The sound was pretty decent but I couldn't hear Steve as well as I would have liked. In addition, there wasn't a ton of differentiation between Hidalgo's guitar and EC's. The setlist was a lot safer than I was imagining, but I guess Elvis didn't want to challenge a festival crowd. It was disappointing though, with both Toussaint and the Dirty Dozen in the house, that there were no nods to New Orleans except when he did The Monkey (written by Dave Bartholemew, a New Orleans legend).

Still, the set rocked and the band seemed to be enjoying themselves. Highlights for me were Clown Strike, which wasn't played at the N.O. gig earlier this year, and the full version of You Really Got a Hold on Me. This was also the first time I've heard him do Brilliant Mistake and Why Don't You Love Me Like You Used to Do, so that was very nice for me as well.

It had rained most of the day, so the grounds were pretty messy, but the rain stayed away during EC's set except for an errant drop or two. All in all, it was nice, but would have been nicer had it been at the end of a lovely sun-drenched day like each of the other 6 days were this year.
