Are you really serious?

Post by laughingcrow »

This is a modified version of an absolutely brilliant survey for Richard Thompson fans on http://www.richardthompsonforcompletists.com.
It was compiled by TJ McGrath, from Woodbridge, Connecticut, USA as the 'Degrees of Richard Thompson Fandom' and I altered it to suit us EC fans (some I altered more than others, most were just replacing RT with EC).
Please visit http://www.richardthompsonforcompletists.com and check out the original (justify me nicking this survey), and if you don't know any of RT's stuff...you should do!

Please take a moment to answer each of the questions below. If you answer 'yes' to a question, give yourself ONE point.

1. One of my lifelong goals is to acquire all of Elvis Costello's albums.
2. I play an Elvis Costello song at least once a day.
3. I know the complete lyrics to more than ten Elvis
Costello songs.
4. I have seen Elvis Costello at least once in my lifetime.
5. I have tried to get others to listen to Elvis Costello songs.
6. I regularly buy music that Elvis Costello has talked about liking regardless of whether I've heard it before.
7. Elvis Costello is in my dreams at least once a month.
8. I would like to/I can play Elvis Costello songs on a musical instrument.
9. It would be supreme happiness to actually have Elvis Costello over for dinner.
10. Elvis Costello's music has changed my life.
11. I know the name of Elvis Costello's sound engineer on his tours.
12. I have more than ten Elvis Costello albums.
13. I bought a Brodsky Quartet record because Elvis Costello has worked with them.
14. Elvis Costello is a role model.
15. I have Elvis Costello's autograph.
16. Elvis Costello has influenced my political views.
17. I go to either the official Elvis Costello website or ECFans site at least once a week.
18. I own and wear an Elvis Costello t-shirt.
19. Elvis Costello is my favorite performer.
20. When I go to an Elvis Costello concert I keep a set list.

~

OK, folks. Let's add up your score.
Compare your tally of points with the chart below:

18-20 points: You are amazing ! You are a complete Elvis Costello fan and you're hardcore. Nothing gets in your way of seeing Elvis Costello or buying his records. I am surprised you haven't moved to Canada and bought a pair of black-rimmed glasses.

15-17 points. You love Elvis Costello. He's your man ! You are still searching for "The Costello and Nieve box set" and "Deep Dead Blue".

12-14 points. Elvis Costello rocks your world. You think he's great and you can't wait to tell your mom. It's not a problem to wait in line for an hour to buy tickets to see Elvis Costello.

9-11 points. You still haven't got all of the Elvis Costello albums, but that's OK. You'll drive at least an hour to go see him perform.

6-8 points. You're kind of new at all of this. You like his songs and his voicebut you're not sure which album to buy after 'This Year's Model'.

3-5 points. Your feet are wet. You want more. You don't know who Bruce is.

1-2 points. You just joined the Elvis Costello fans site after hearing one of his songs and you think you'd like to know more. Your eyes and ears are wide open and you're SMILING.

(I hope this survey was helpful to some of you. Please remember to keep your Elvis Costello fanaticism in check. Get plenty of exercise, eat your vegetables, and get 8 hours of good sleep a night. A good Elvis Costello fan is a HEALTHY Elvis Costello fan)

I got 16.

I do own all his albums. Including the EC&SN Box set and Deep Dead Blue. You all need to search Ebay for these and get them as soon as possible.
I wish that I could push a button
And talk in the past and not the present tense
And watch this hurtin' feeling disappear
Like it was common sense
It was a fine idea at the time
Now it's a brilliant mistake

14.

And we also have the Box Set and Deep Dead Blue. 8)

And much as I would love to have him to dinner, I don't know that I would consider that "supreme happiness."

But damn fine dinner company to say the least.

16. Taking this survey made me realize I don't listen to Elvis every single day as I used to. But I do own every official album released, as well as several boots, and have tried to get many people into him.

Somehow I ended up with an 11 . . .

But I own all of his regular albums (not comps or DDB or the box set), and I would (and did) drive for 9 hours to see him . . .

Then again, I dont often dream about him, and I wouldnt necessarily say he was a "role model", so . . .

13, my favourite number, and a healthy total, I think. I don't own either of those, but would like to. Why don't they just issue a proper and fuller EC/SN, perhaps combining the highlights of the existing set with stuff from the recent tour?

It's not a real measure of fandom, and isn't supposed to make anyone feel inadequate! :D
