The 'new' songs Elvis has been performing the last few shows have actually been knocking around for a while as part of a 'song cycle' called The Delivery Man. He and Steve did some of them first back in late 1999.

Costello working on musical
Elvis Costello is working on a new musical and debuted material from the embryonic production during a recent concert in London.

The Music365 website reports Costello told his audience the play is called "The Delivery Man" and centres on the lives of three women of various ages and their relationships.

The songs are written for women to perform, but Costello tested out several of the songs on his Royal Festival Hall audience last Friday, including one number called "Heart-Shaped Bruise."

The "Delivery Man" songs were among eight new numbers Costello trotted out at the show, including a song called "Burnt Sugar" which he wrote in collaboration with Carole King, Music365 reported.

-Last night, accompanied just by Steve Nieve on the keyboards as he was at the Apollo several months ago, Costello proceeded to gleefully reinvent vast chunks of his back catalogue whilst also treating us to a bevy of new material from the numerous projects he's currently working on. This included a songcycle called The Delivery Man, a film called Prison Song and some plain and simple new songs.

But the songs played recently were not among those played in 1999. I don't think it's necessarily safe to assume that the newly performed songs were written that long ago.
