Elvis tour in Scandinavia 1978

Post by krm »

Can someone please use their skills and update the wiki with the following dates concerning the Scandinavian tour of 1978. Further research with newspaper clippings, ads etc. is ongoing but slow. I have some material but need much more to be truly confident.
The show on the 12th in Västervik is confirmed, so the date for Helsinki seems to be unrealistic. Research ongoing. If someone have any information from these shows, I really would like to hear from you.

July 2nd Roskilde Festival - Denmark (tape exists)
July 4th Oslo, Chateau Neuf - Norway
July 6th Hunnebostrand, Folkets Park - Sweden
July 7th Malmö, Dads Dancehall - Sweden (tape exists)
July 8th Kristianopel, Masten - Sweden
July 9th Karlstad, Sundsta Aulan - Sweden
July 10th Stockholm - Sweden (tape exists)
July 11th Linköping, Folkets Park - Sweden (tape exists)
July 12th Västervik, Visfestival - Sweden
July 12th??? Helsinki, Kaivopuisto - Finland (tape exists)

Good luck krm!

As you may see Wiki now includes the dates

Going by my recent Macroom '81 researches my simplest piece of advice is just keep persisting. Most of my research was via e-mail. E-mails are so easy to not be reacted to, deferred etc. Re-sending them with a jokey ' any further thoughts?' comment can be surprisingly effective. Similarly , include details of news stories of the time, always a big aid to remembering. I'll have a look at whatever I have in paper form relating to that period and get back to you.

Jan e-mails me -

No idea if you're interested, but... Possibly, you might vaguely remember, that I wrote about a Finnish guitarist, Albert Jarvinen, and a rumour that he'd been asked to join The Attractions... Well, it seems he actually did join the band, sort of, but only for two gigs in Finland in 1979, and only for one number at each gig, Nick Lowe's Heart Of The City.

I was glancing through this fairly new book about Jarvinen yesterday at the library, and to my surprise there was a photo of him on stage with Costello... I actually thought it was fake, at first, that somebody had made a photo montage of their pictures, as a way of posing the question: "What if?", or: "What would've happened if...?"

But no, it seems both Nick Lowe and Jake Riviera were quite impressed by Jarvinen, even suggesting him as a permanent replacement for Wilko Johnson in Dr. Feelgood, when Wilko fell out with the band, etc. (Nothing came out of it, supposedly due to problems with work permits.) And it seems Nick Lowe actually recorded some material with Jarvinen in Finland, but was then later on unhappy with the results - possibly because he felt the Finnish studio wasn't quite up to standard, or possibly because everybody had been a bit too drunk, or whatever. And so the songs in question were later re-recorded, without Jarvinen. But Jarvinen did perform live with Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds & co in Finland and Sweden.

And it seems Jarvinen was part of the entourage - mainly as Nick's guest and drinking buddy - on one of Costello's tours in Britain, when Nick Lowe was temporarily replacing Bruce Thomas, who'd damaged his hand. This was probably 1978 or -79.

Well, the book's in Finnish (and fairly thick, ambitious and expensive). And I'm not sure it's worth ordering for just one photo of Costello on stage in Finland in 1979, really.

But if indeed one wants to, it can be ordered here:

Not much is said about Costello per se, in the book. There's far more stuff about Nick Lowe and his drinking habits and adventures in Finland, really. And interestingly, Jake Riviera kind of comes off in a better light, than either Lowe, or Costello & The Attractions. Costello and his band seem to have been in a terrible state, probably due to drugs, during their stay in Finland in -79.

But if you're interested, I could try translating some brief passages of the book, or at least picking out some of the more interesting details for you, or so.

Here's some YouTube stuff I found, now, of Jarvinen, playing with various very different groups and people, like Hurriganes (the legendary Finnish "pub rock" group he's mostly famous from), Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead, and his hero Albert King, etc:

And here's some more info - the languade is so-and-so, and this persistent old rumour (in Finnish rock circles), about Costello asking Jarvinen to join the Attractions (more permanently), is actually repeated here, but otherwise it should be pretty accurate stuff, I think:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Järvinen

Costello briefly mentioned Hurriganes, and Jarvinen, and Nick Lowe recording with the latter, in a 2002 interview for the Finnish Soundi mag, when asked what he knew about Finnish music. He also mentioned Sibelius as a favourite, plus was somewhat familiar with the music of the more modern composer Magnus Lindberg. And he had some vague memories of the legendary Finnish punk rocker Pelle Miljoona, plus some crazy summer rock festival out in the countryside, where the amount of electricity needed for the festival meant all the lights went out in a nearby village, etc.

some background or additional info can be be found here. The Yeprock reissue of Lowe Labour of Lust was accompanyed by an article on the Yeprock webpage that included some info about how they met.

Great work, Kjell, wonder how Elvis felt about having all these guitarists being put forward at that time, ( Martin Belmont, Dave Edmunds)

I forgot to add that the picture of EC and ALbert is from the finnish book about Albert. Difficult to find, expensive and written in Finnish.

ISBN - 9789510383612
