Top Ten CDs of 2004 so far

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Top Ten CDs of 2004 so far

Post by King Hoarse »

Great records from the first half of 2004:

1. Lou Reed "Animal serenade" (live)
2. Nellie McKay "Get Away From Me"
3. Johnny Dowd "Cemetery Shoes"
4. Ron Sexsmith "Retriever"
5. Magnetic Fields "i"
6. Franz Ferdinand
7. The Streets "A Grand Don't Come For Free"
8. Wilco "A Ghost Is Born"
9. Bad Religion "The Empire Strikes First"
10. Morrissey "You Are The Quarry"

PS. SNFU "In The Meantime And In Between Time" would have been on the list, but I don't think it's been released yet. Haven't heard Forbert, Lobos or Loretta yet, but I'm pretty certain Morrissey will have to go if it doesn't grow on me fast. And my childhood sweethearts Bad Religion are in a tight spot too. The first eight will be hard to move, though. DS.

1. Loretta Lynn, Van Lear Rose
2. Graham Parker, Your Country
3. Dan Reeder, Dan Reeder
4. Los Lobos, The Ride
5. Steve Forbert, Just Like There's Nothing To It
6. David Cross, It's Not Funny
7. Jim Lauderdale, Headed For The Hills
8. The Stanley Brothers, An Evening Long Ago (Yeah, it's a vault recording from 1956......I DON'T CARE!)
9. Modest Mouse, Good News For People Who Love Bad News
10. Ron Sexsmith, Retriever

I have yet to pick up new albums from Wilco, Johnny Dowd, Dave Alvin, Morrissey, The Magnetic Fields or.......Alanis Morrissette.

I definitly second "The Streets", such a genius album.

I can't wait until "Decadence" - Head Automatica, album of the year!

Incomplete. So far through first half 2004:

1. Los Lobos "The Ride"
2. David Byrne "Grown Backwards"
3. Crystal Method "Legion of Boom"
4. Afro Celt Sound System "Pod"
5. Pat Metheny "One Quiet Night"
6. Graham Parker "Your Country" (with twangy version of Crawlin' from the wreckage)
7. Richard Thompson "Old Kit Bag" (2003, but feels like a 2004 release to me)
....
"The smarter mysteries are hidden in the light" - Jean Giono (1895-1970)

No votes for "Guilt Show" - The Get Up Kids, after all of the E.C.-name-dropping they did in the publicising of it.

King Hoarse,

What's the story with Cemetary Shoes? It hasn't been released stateside, isn't listed on Dowd's Allmusic page or even his own website. Do you guys have a deal with him for first dibs on all of his new material or something? If so, I need to look more seriously into this expat thing.
