Triple Elvis: How does Stojko rank against Presley and Costello?
[...]
Although it’s just day one of Stojko’s life as a music pro — surely it isn’t too soon to evaluate his artistry alongside the first two Elvises (or is it Elvii?), Presley and Costello.
Overall sound
Elvis Presley: rhythm n’ blues, gospel, country and rockabilly
Elvis Costello: new-wave anger meets melodic pop genius
Elvis Stojko: Middle-of-the-road pop blandness. Although he often skated to the soundtrack of the Bruce Lee biopic Dragon, Stojko is clearly stuck on the sweeping grandeur of mid-‘80s U2. (The guitar licks on Let Me Be the One sound like they came from Edge’s reject pile.)
Vocal style
Elvis Presley: combines gospel passion and erotic fervour
Elvis Costello: combines angry snarling and smooth tunefulness
Elvis Stojko: combines limited range and Bono’s breathy, spoken-word shtick
Sample lyrics about romance
Elvis Presley: “Love me tender/ Love me sweet/ Never let me go.”
Elvis Costello: “Don’t say you love me when it’s just a rumour/ Don’t say a word if there is any doubt / Sometimes I think that love is just a tumour/ You’ve got to cut it out.”
Elvis Stojko: “Remember the first look or glance/ When I lost any chance/ Of imagining a lifetime without you (hoo, hoo).”
Visual presentation
Elvis Presley: Heavy reliance on sideburns and pelvic movement
Elvis Costello: Horn-rimmed glasses, thin ties, knock-kneed and jerky strutting around stage (ca. 1977)
Elvis Stojko: He hasn’t toured as a musician yet, but we imagine he’ll rely heavily on his signature martial arts moves and probably eschew his skating costumes in favour of black T-shirts and black jeans.
Figure skating ability
Elvis Presley: nil
Elvis Costello: non-existent
Elvis Stojko: former world champion, particularly strong on quad jump combinations..

I was watching Family Man with Nicholas Cage on TV last night. I had forgotten that EC was on the soundtrack. But in one scene Nicholas Cage is looking through some of his belongings given to him by his ex-girlfriend. Amongst them was the Trust LP! Nice touch.

"Elvis Costello Apparel
The Native Son Autumn 2010 Collection Has Some Serious Mod Appeal
Although this clothing line isn’t actually designed after the famous singer/songwriter, it definitely looks as if it borrowed a page from Mr. Costello’s closet. The Native Son Autumn 2010 Collection was designed by Kyle Fitzgibbons and offers a simple yet refined look that has an element of geeky coolness to it."

This thread hasn't been used for a while. Readers in the North of England may know the misery of pushing a trolley around Morrisons (a UK supemarket for those who don't know.)
I was in the Halifax branch yesterday and imagine my surprise when Everyday I Write the Book came on the instore music system. It cheered me up so much that I tried "giving a longing look" to the checkout girl, but she just glared at me!

I worked in a shopping centre in Essex and we had a satellite channel that pumped music into the centre and I think is used by quite a few shopping centre/malls around the country. I only ever heard two Elvis Songs played in the four years I worked there. Oliver's Army a few times but not very many and Everyday I Write The Book was played more often . It seemed to have a period of 3 or 4 weeks when you would hear it every 2nd or 3rd day then you would hear it for a few months.
Other than that the music was ok and quite varied it played at least 13 or 14 Bowie songs,Weller, The Smiths and Morrissey a fair bit. In fact it is featured in the Morrissey video of Everyday Is Like Sunday.

Re: Elvis when you least expect it
Contained in the enjoyable read "it's only a movie - reel life adventures of a film obsessive" which is the autobiography of Mark Kermode, the film critic, are two Elvis-y bits. The dedication page includes these immortal words:-
"Oh I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused..." Elvis Costello, '(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes'
and in case you thought this was a one - off, Chapter 6 is entitled "Radio Radio"
So he's clearly a fan, but regrettably that's it. A pity really 'cos I'd have liked to read his take on Alex Cox's "Straight to Hell" or Bleasedale's "No Surrender".

Just got back from Israel and heard Lipstick Vogue in a t-shirt shop in the Jewish Quarter in the Old City section of Jerusalem.

I put "That's Not the Part of Him You're Leaving" on the jukebox at The Corner Bar a couple of weeks ago. Nobody was expecting it, and nobody liked it.
Loving this board since before When I Was Cruel.

Re: Elvis when you least expect it
I used to work in the Halifax branch of Morrisons from 1979-81. On Saturdays I started at 7am, one hour before the shop opened. It was a constant battle with Jackie Moran (God bless 'er) to play my "My Aim Is True" tape in place of her "Rose Royce Greatest Hits". Our boss grew to like Elvis so I won through in the end. After that first hour of customer-less bliss, the rest of the day was indeed grim. The checkout girls were, and always will be, merciless.Mikeh wrote:This thread hasn't been used for a while. There's a certain pattern to how goods are laid out in a Supermarket (all Morrisons, not just the Halifax Branch) so if anybody wants to know where to find something, just ping me. We could even start a new thread:
"Where would I find item xxxxx in a Morrisons Supermarket, any Morrisons Supermarket, circa 1979-81".
Perhaps we need a new forum even, where more board members could exhibit their Mastermind-like specialist skills.
Where's North from 'ere?

8am yesterday , wafting out from the tannoy of the Golden Square Shopping Centre, Warrington, were the strains of "Alison" , crooned by our hero.
Highlight of my day.

Well, on '30 Rock' last night Alec Baldwin's character remarked, in defence of an associate: "He got me a kidney! (Pause) ...from Elvis Costello!'

I was surprised to hear "45" playing in "Bob's Store" the other day. Not a song that you would expect to be playing in a big, sports clothing store.

Re: Elvis when you least expect it
I had to collect my Mobile Fidelity LP of This year's Model from our local Post Office sorting office and the two postal workers were intrigued by my buying vinyl. They mentioned that earlier this week someone had collected a large parcel but wouldn't say what records were inside so I felt obliged to promote our hero .
"Declan MacManus" said the male worker, "He's really called Declan MacManus. I used to know him when he was a kid, he lived just down the road from me. I never liked him ! he always claims to be a Manchester United fan or something but he was brought up to support Chelsea !"
He then went on to say he went around with Nick Lowe and was in a band who thought they were all going to be famous but of course "none of them were". I was impressed by his outburst but guessed he'd got the Man Utd connection wrong although he might have supported them seeing he'd never been near Old Trafford like the other 99% of their fans ( That comments for Otis !!)
I wasn't sure if he wanted to say more but he stomped back inside the store room. I'm sure if John had been there we'd have had the family album out !

Re: Elvis when you least expect it
A seeming permanent feature of Irish radio is Sunday Miscellany. Airing at nine on a Sunday morning its a haphazard blend of talk and music and has been the soundtrack to many a hangover and/or slightly disconected mind that turns on the radio and,in my case, falls back into bed and maybe hears it if the mind is suitably engaged. The show is narration free , with the pieces credited at the end so it's all a surprise. Todays was just such a case with me just about hearing a talk about the now non-existant railway from Westport to Achill Island, a part of the west of Ireland I've come to know well. After a bit of Mendelssohn a fascinating little talk about migrating birds , dwelling on their need to move on etc. it played in just perfectly to I Want to Vanish by Elvis. A perfect example of Elvis ' when you least expect it' !
To cap it all the announcer pronounced 'Nieve' as 'Neeve' - why does that happen?
A podcast of the show should be up at this link soon - I think they usually only feature the speech content.

Walking in the middle of an HMV coincidentally looking for MAIT Deluxe a few years back (I bought it that day ) and in the midst of the rather deathly store played Jackson, Monk & Rowe, it comes to find the manager was a huge EC fan and decided to bring in his collection, not only that but right after played the Barenaked Ladies Sound Of Your Voice, needless to say I spent a lot more time than money in the store.
It's not the days when you leave me, but all I fear are the nights.

BBC television capped off its prime-time royal wedding coverage last Friday with a montage set to the dulcet tones of EC singing She.
