"Beyond Belief" - Elvis Costello
Cannot hear it to many times. Means so much. What does it mean? It means so much! But what does it mean?

It means history repeats the same conceits.
This is nice:
Very varied muscially, Manu Chao features a bit, lovely stuff. How much great music is there from Mali? A ton!
Elsewhere, the new Word sampler ha s a fetching live solo rendition of their lovely song The Engine Driver, apparently a whole live CD is on its way. Brought home how strong some of his songs are.

Bonus disc. Which hasn't been released officially, someone has compiled it - http://nevergetoutoftheboat.blogspot.co ... tones.html . It's awesome. Nice additon to Stripped which is a fine release already. Who needs the Shine A Light soundtrack... at least for now.

Another Sunday Mail freebie. Last time it was Prince on release (played once, why bother again?), this time it's a year old Macca CD. I loathe the paper, but worth getting for this. 'Dance Tonight' is worth having to hand for when you want a smile on your face and I thought 'Only Mama Knows' was a good 'un, and the whole LP worth a few spins. I was a big Wings fan in the 70s, and could get into the sound of this very easily.

Macca's solo stuff just bores me to tears. I don't even think I'd spring for a paper to get that one.

I have almost all of his albums I think. Either/Or is probably my favorite. New Moon is a real goldmine of great material. It's hard to understand how some of these tunes never made it on to the albums.colrow26 wrote:Who Shot sam - what do you think of New Moon by Elliott Smith? you got any of his other stuff?? got into him about 8 years ago and got all his stuff now, what a tragic waste of talent eh?

Beautiful album, self-recorded in a cabin in rural Wisconsin. It reminds me a bit of Iron & Wine. Definitely in that same sort of stripped-down folky vein. Very good stuff.

He is consistently so good though, I'm constantly discovering some amazing b-side or other, his site sweetadelines.com or something used to have a bunch of rare stuff available, don't know about now. One of my fav songwriters of the last 15 years. His melodies stick for days.Who Shot Sam? wrote:I have almost all of his albums I think. Either/Or is probably my favorite. Raising Sand.
practically a masterpiece. hypnotic. owed to t bone mostly no doubt in framing, but how robert plant made this transition w/ nary a slip is astounding. superstar. his rendition of Fortune Teller is most splendid. and if you haven't heard the perfomance of townes van zandt's Nothin', try to. deadly.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Figure 8 was first album i heard by Elliott, very Beatles influenced and probably his most "produced" album. I love the XO album, "pitzellah" and "waltz no 2" are superb songs...maybe we should start a seperate Elliott Smith thread......???Bambooneedle wrote He is consistently so good though, I'm constantly discovering some amazing b-side or other, his site sweetadelines.com or something used to have a bunch of rare stuff available, don't know about now. Re: What are you listening to right now?
Great LP as a whole, with two outstanding songs in 'There Goes The Fear' and 'Pounding', definitely one of my fave songs ever. Haven't played it for a while, but am now on my fourth play of the day (revisiting Glasto and Later performances). Music doesn't get more exciting.

A Million Shades Of Blue - Gene Vincent
Late '60s Gene Vincent . Very CCR like, proving he could rock right to the end. "Slow Times Comin'" is a highlight, c.9 minutes of riffing - excellent!

First play here for a copy of the double 180g vinyl pressing of 'The Delivery Man'. An example of when the vinyl leaves the CD in the shade.

Falling Down - Scarlett Johansson backed by David Bowie
This is from her album of Tom Waits' covers. Sounds a bit like a blander version of Sinead O'Connor.

New Adventures in Hi Fi. In preparation for next week's REM show in Raleigh! So far the setlists for the tour are looking excellent.

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions Rattlesnakes. Thanks for the impetus to pick that up, Otis. It is indeed very good.

Good move! Can't go wrong with Lloyd.
New Adv's in Hi-Fi contains some of my favourite REM songs. Hope it's a good show.

WSS was very sniffy, but reviews have been positive that I've read and my son (following his work experience stint at HMV) was telling me to get it.invisible Pole wrote:Falling Down - Scarlett Johansson backed by David Bowie
