Elvis & Attractions performing "I Hope You're Happy Now".

Can anyone say where this comes from ?

At the risk of sounding like an old prick I have to say this is soooo much better than most of Elvis has done in the last couple of years

IP - Never seen that before, great Beatley version, and I couldnt agree more , thats the EC that I love.

"...in his torquoise pyjamas and his motorcycle hat".
echos myron like a siren
with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

It's from the Tonight show circa 1984, not long after the release of Goodbye Cruel World. EC also performed Peace In Our Time solo. Joan Rivers was the guest host at the time. In typical EC fashion of the day, they played this song, not even on the new album, and PIOT, not exactly hit single material. EC was out to prove some points (which nobody got!) rather than promote the new disc.

Thanks for this ; the '84 take on 'Happy Now is well worth hearing. I can't find it now, but Elvis did once comment about how this TV version was the best version of the song, having a quality that he never matched in the studio.

1984-09-12 Tonight Show
* The Tonight Show, Burbank, CA, NBC, live
01. I Hope You're Happy Now
02. Peace In Our Time

Elvis comments on the Blood And Chocolate sleevenote -

"I hope you're happy now" was another song being cut for the third time. Having recorded it as a possible single with The Attractions in 1984, I attempted to rework it without much success at the final King of America sessions. Time had lent the song a little humour to lighten its originally murderous intent. Now it almost sounded like pop music.

From the GCW ('84) 'note -

Although between solo and band tours throughout the year, as my private life went into considerable turmoil, I recorded only one more new song in 1984, when I took The Attraction into the studio during our U.K. dates. The result didn’t really match the emotional intent of “I Hope You’re Happy Now”, which had to wait for a more sarcastic reading on Blood & Chocolate before being officially issued.
as my private life went into considerable turmoil
Marriage No. 1 disintegrating ; gives the song's lyric a certain extra bite!

The interview portion of this is great too. EC really gets on JR nerves. BTW JR was/is a super RR lover.

Elvis performing Hidden Charms on MTV Unplugged in 1991. The song was skipped from the official broadcast.
