BERN - Am Blue Balls Festival Luzern ist der mit Spannung erwartete Auftritt des Ex-New-Wavers Elvis Costello zusammen mit Allen Toussaint, der Rhythm'n'Blues-Legende aus New Orleans, über die Bühne gegangen - mit viel Saft und Kraft.
Costello und Toussaint boten mit ihrer achtköpfigen Band ein über weite Strecken begeisterndes Set, laut den Veranstaltern ihr einziger Auftritt in der Schweiz. Die Zusammenarbeit der beiden Ausnahmekönner hatte nach der Flutkatastrophe in New Orleans begonnen und das Album "The River In Reverse" hervorgebracht.
Daraus und aus ihrem immensen übrigen Werk stellten Costello und Toussaint ein intensives Programm zusammen, das nicht zuletzt von der bestens disponierten Bläsersektion stetig vorangetrieben wurde. Ein kraftvoller Auftritt, dem vielleicht die etwas intimeren Zwischentöne abgingen.
Die Intensität jedenfalls schien sich in jenen wenigen Songs zu steigern, in denen Toussaint am Flügel als hervorragender Pianist die Führung hatte oder gar singen durfte. Ansonsten dominierte Costello als eindeutiger Frontmann, versierter Gitarrist und immer noch beeindruckender Sänger das Set.
Ob es sich dabei tatsächlich um den Höhepunkt der Blue-Balls-Ausgabe 2007 handelte, wie vom Veranstalter angepriesen, muss offen bleiben. Auch Calexico setzten ein Glanzlicht, ebenso die Holmes-Brothers, David Gray oder Gianna Nannini. Positiv überrascht hat auch der englische Songwriter Badly Drawn Boy.
Das Blue Balls Festival dauert noch bis 28. Juli. Auf dem Programm stehen unter anderen Rickie Lee Jones und Steely Dan am Freitag und Candy Dulfer am Samstag.

Das Blue Balls ist ein angenehmes Festival. Es trennt die Party von der Kunst. Die Party findet zwischen den Bierständen des Sponsors rund um das Luzerner Seebecken statt. Die täglich vier Konzerte, die hier gegeben werden, waren in der Geschichte dieses Festivals auch schon liebevoller programmiert; aber die hier auftreten, sind zuverlässige Stimmungsbringer und erfüllen damit ihren Zweck. Im KKL aber, wo die grossen Konzerte stattfinden, bleibt die Party draussen. Die schöne Übersicht, welche die beiden Säle bieten, lassen konzentrierte Konzerterlebnisse zu, nicht selten mit bekannten Namen, die sonst auf grösseren Bühnen zugange sind.
Hier hat Luzern in den letzten zehn Tagen das beste Blue Balls Festival seit vielen Jahren erlebt. Die Stars, nur um ihres grossen Namens willen verpflichtet, fehlten diesmal, dafür kamen lebendige Künstler. Das Resultat: wenig von den Posen und von verblichenem Glanz, viel von hervorragendem Musikantentum. Die panamerikanischen Grenzgänger von Calexico etwa oder der grundsympathische Badly Drawn Boy, der ungekrönte König von «Uncool Britannia», spielten grosse Konzerte.
Prekäre, magische Momente
Und mit Rickie Lee Jones kam es am zweitletzten Abend im weissen Konzertsaal zur Sternstunde. Die Sängerin und Songwriterin, die in den späten siebziger Jahren als verspätete Beatnik in der Rock'n'Roll-Schickeria von Los Angeles aufgetaucht war, hat mit «The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard» im letzten Winter ihr bestes Album veröffentlicht. Auf der Bühne wuchs sie mit ihren drei wunderbaren Musikern nochmals weit darüber hinaus. Vielleicht, weil sie in den neuen Songs ein für sie neues Terrain erkundet – und diese Erkundung noch keineswegs abgeschlossen ist: Rickie Lee Jones war ja nie eine Singer-Songwriterin in der Folktradition, vielmehr komponierte sie viele ihrer stärksten Stücke in der Erinnerung ans Great American Songbook der Jazzstandards. So entstanden Popsongs, die sich die Freiheit des Jazz nahmen.
Die neuen Songs aber sind Folk, gelegentlich zu einem repetitiven Rock erweitert, der an die elementare Basis dieser Musik reicht. Und manchmal sind sie auch nur ein Schweif davon, ein psychedelischer Teilchennebel aus Folkfitzelchen und versprengtem Rock, in dem Jones' helles, manchmal auch schrilles Gesangsgebet leuchtet wie der den Weg weisende Komet. In der Luzerner Darbietung dieser Band steckte gelegentlich so viel Freiheit, wie gerade noch möglich war, bevor die Songs zerstäubt oder ganz einfach stillgestanden und erloschen wären. Das waren, etwa in «Where I Like It Best» vom neuen Album, manchmal prekäre Momente, aber Momente von höchster Spannung und reiner Magie. Es war, als habe die verspätete Beatnik das offene Land doch noch erreicht. Und mit ihr auch ein paar ältere Songs wie «The Last Chance Texaco» von 1979 oder «Love Is Gonna Bring Us Back Alive» von 1989, die nun klangen, als habe sie die Jones eben am Strassenrand gefunden, grobkörnig und roh. Bis auf ihr Innerstes ausgemergelt, aber zu hellwachem Leben erweckt.
Nicht zur Sternstunde reichte es dem Konzert des britischen Elitesongschmieds Elvis Costello, der in Luzern mit einer Band aus New Orleans spielte. Allen Toussaint hatte sie für die Band und den vierköpfigen Bläsersatz neu arrangiert, und hier nun waren die typischen New-Orleans-Grooves, oft etwas fett angerichtet, gegenüber den schlanken und agileren Originalen nicht in jedem Fall im Vorteil. Was den Abend aber vor allem verdarb: Das Konzert blieb eine One-Man-Show des Elvis Costello. Toussaint, der nicht nur ein ausgewiesener Professor des New-Orleans-Pianos ist, sondern auch ein begnadeter Sänger, kam nicht über den Status einer Gastlegende hinaus und durfte gerade einmal drei Songs singen (darunter immerhin den Höhepunkt des Konzertes, seinen Hit «Yes We Can Can»).
Nun, Elvis Costello ist ein guter Sänger, seine Stimme hat Kraft, und von der Band liess er sich noch so gerne zum Parforceritt antreiben. Dazu neigt er seit Jahren. Bei Allen Toussaint hätte er etwas über Understatement und Souplesse lernen können. Die Chance ist vertan.
