I am presently reading a series of short stories by my favourite author Haruki Murakami, entitled "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman". In one of the short stories entitled "Hanalei Bay", there is a dialog that goes as follows (the main character, a middle aged housewife named Sachi is having a conversation with two young Japanese surfers in Hawaii on a surfing holiday - the discussion has turned to the baby boomer generation):

Sachi: "Anyhow, for your own good, you'd better stay in a decent place in Hanalei. Things happen...even murder sometimes."

"Not exactly the peaceful paradise it's cracked up to be," the stocky boy said.

"No," Sachi agreed. "The age of Elvis is long gone."

"I'm not sure what that's all about," said the tall boy, "but I know Elvis Costello is an old guy already."

Sachi drove without talking for a while after that.

"Alison" was briefly played in the pilot episode of the new sitcom from the guy who did "Family Guy". "The Winner" or something. "Alison" was the best part of the episode.

Yeah, DD, our daughter was so excited when she came to tell us about it. :) The kids thought it was cool.

Jo Brand chose Couldn't call it unexpected No.4 on Desert Island discs this morning and waxed lyrical about all things EC. Also included Billy Bragg, Kate Bush and The Damned.

And you fail to mention that very lovely rendition of People Like Us from True Stories by John Goodman. I only caught a bit of it, in the car, but knew she'd play EC as he's her fave.

You so frequently speak the truth, Otis!!

I missed most of the John Goodman track through slipping out for a cuppa.

I also should have mentioned that Hugh Dennis in the Independent on Sunday chose Blood & Chocolate as his indispensable pop record.

(It's hard to understand why otherwise high-brow papers such as the IOS still describe anything that's not classical music or jazz as "pop")

Is nothing sacred?

I got a copy of the first season of WKRP in Cincinnati and the news is not good. Which is disappointing to say, because I was lobbying for this release and believed - and still believe - that it would have been possible to reduce music costs without damaging the integrity of the show. That's not what's happened here.

Below I have compiled a list of music changes on the new DVD. As you can see, it's pretty similar to the list of music changes from the late ?90s syndication package; some of the generic music and overdubbing is the same in both versions. But I was prepared to be OK with this set if it was better, or no worse, than that syndication version. Unfortunately, it?s worse in two ways. One, there were a number of songs that were retained in that syndication package (which ran on Nick at Nite and elsewhere) that are replaced here. Songs like 'Dogs' by Pink Floyd and 'Jailhouse Rock? by Elvis Presley are now gone. And second, because most of these episodes don?t allow the music to be separated from the dialogue track, they've dealt with this problem by cutting footage from several episodes.

Before Zodiac ( excellent movie) , the Savoy, Dublin cinema PA is playing, this evening, One by U2. It fades and another song starts which , after a while , I realise features Elvis on vocals but is otherwise totally unfamiliar. Then I recognise it - it's You Stole My Bell , Elvis' song from the 2001 film The Family Man. Checking that albums tracklisting I see that they were indeed playing that album.

I haven't heard it in six years ; the lyric reads surprisingly poignant considering hos Elvis' life changed ( was changing?) the following year.

YOU STOLE MY BELL
Elvis Costello/ Cait O'Riordan

There is a place
Underneath the staircase
Where I keep the evidence
Of what once would offer peace
In a deep blue velvet box filled with joy and pride
Should I pick the locks?
Should I peek inside?
Can I stand the sight of those happy days?
Should I strike a match, burn them all away?

Cos you stole my bell
And you broke my chime
And the clock spins round but it won't keep time
There are many lovely girls in this cold and loveless world
But not one is the equal of you, heaven knows how much I love you (x2)

So here we are
But it's not quite like we thought
Those things were priceless then
Now I know they can't be bought
In a deep blue velvet box fastened with a pin
Should I lift the lid?
Should I look within?
Was it my last chance or my first mistake?
Is it just a step that we'll never take?

Cos you stole my bell
And you broke my chime
And the clock spins round but it won't keep time
There are many lovely girls in this cold and loveless world
But not one is the equal of you, heaven knows how much I love you (x3)

This is one of my favorite EC songs and one that is relatively unheard by most folks. Would have been an excellent addition to just about any album.

This past week, The New York Post, our local tabloid, honored a terrific performance by Oliver Perez, a New York Mets pitcher, by plastering "Oliver's Army" in big bold letter on its main Sports Page. Very, very unexpected.

I went to see Knocked Up last night. The part where Allison calls Ben to talk to him about being pregnant, look behind her to the framed pictures on the wall. Our man Elvis is prominently seen across her left shoulder. He is seen a second time a few seconds later. Very easy to spot.

I thought of the coincedence of having a main character named Allison was funny. 8) I stayed for credits to check the spelling, it was with double Ls.

By the way, the flic was pretty funny. Two thumbs up.

This morning I saw the episode of Frazier where Elvis was the folk-singing guy in the coffee shop. Never really saw the whole episode the night it aired due to an unexpected something.

He just spoke so horribly fast you couldn't understand anything he said. I think the character had potential, but it's like he was scared to death of the camera.

turned over to Film 4 on the telly this evening and caught the closing credits of a film called 'Get Over It', never heard of it, starring Kirsten Dunst, and Alison was the song on the credits.
