Just spent the last 24 hours driving around the mountains of Alabama visiting Doc and the 3 boys at Boy Scout Camp. I listened to ELO Out of the Blue for the first time in a long while. Yesterday and today were lovely days for a drive. Seemed appropriate hearing Mr. Blue Sky.

Been checking out Ben Folds Songs for Silverman. It's good generally, more than listenable, but nothing can live up to the haunting, elegiac qualities of Jesusland.

All set luncheonette,
kitchenette to let
I bet to get hamburgerette again.

We met in a launderette and kissed beneath the air jet
No threat no sweat
Another one in the back of the net.

When I met Jeanette,
Substitute Ronette,
She said Will you remember?
Said I could never forget her
Au naturalette,
Her mom's a millionette
So we shared one last cigarette and swapped false addresses,
Jeanette,
Jeanette.

Dangerous
She's like damp dynamite
Oh boy, enjoy, have a nice night
Won't you promise to wrote me whenever you can
Make sure you warn me if you're coming to Birmingham.

I get Jeanette
Substitute Ronette
She said Will you remember?
Said I could never forget her,
Jeanette
No no no I'll never forget you.

Touching your skin has proved one thing,
That love's still exciting.
We're getting there
We're nearly there
Just one final fling,
Pushing into a new love steady deep and strong
Steady on
You know we shouldn't talk like this.

I met Jeanette
Substitute Ronette
She said Will you remember?
Said I could never forget you.
Au naturalette,
Her mom's a millionette
So we shared one last cigarette and swapped false addresses,
Jeanette

No no no I'll never forget you.

Easy Tiger is great (who can resist and album called Easy Tiger?) being a very recent Ryan Adams convert Ive just recently got 29, and man, thats one helluva record. I always wrote him off from what Id heard as being a bit of a drip, but hell , that boy can write a song, 29 is nothing short of a masterpiece. "Strawberry Wine" is fucking brilliant.

29 is great, but Cold Roses is my favorite of the trio of albums he released that year. Have you had a chance to get into that one Mike?

I nearly got that one instead of 29, as Ive heard that its great too. Its next on the list. If its better than 29 , well I will be mightily impressed. Whats the deal with this guy? Seems to me he gets some pretty rotten press, but these records are fantastic. What was the other record released that year? I mean Cold Roses is a double right?
Thats Dylan 65/66 type output.

Jacksonville City Nights was the other album released that year.

The only Ryan Adams records I own are Heartbreaker, Gold, Cold Roses and Easy Tiger. I think my favourite is Heartbreaker, followed by Easy Tiger, followed by Cold Roses, followed by Gold. But I'm eager to hear more of his stuff, 29 in particular.

Adams' rotten press is deserved- he is a real prick, albeit a very, very talented one. He is well-known for going off on diatribes against his audience (and not just when some calls for 'Summer of 69'). I was in the audience at the House of Blues one night when, after an excellent and lengthy set, he went off on 'corporate' rock venues, where people only wanted to get drunk and get laid (as if those things had nothing to do with rock and roll!) and swore he'd fire his booking agents and never play House of Blues again. By my count, he's played six more HOB shows since that night, rendering his anti-corporate stand rather hypocritical. I also recall him appearing in national ad for the Gap a few years ago. Anyway, he also has been known to belittle his fans on his website and can be a crusty interview as well.

Still, the music cannot be denied. He is an outstanding songwriter, a fantastic vocalist, and as long as he puts on a good show (as he did when I saw him) he can be a prick.

Mike, I think you will like Cold Roses better, if only because the consistency of the album is better and the songs get stuck in your head in a big way.

Yeah, Ive heard that phone message he left for Jim De Rogatis after his rather bitchy review of a concert, at the House of Blues funnily enough I think, which is pretty entertaining. He wouldnt be the first rather petulant , hypocritical rock n roller though, almost a pre requsite for the job. In fact it sounds a little like someone else we all know and love.

Really taken with Oh My God, Whatever etc from Easy Tiger ,its such a brilliant song, and I see on YouTube theres an even better live electric version.

Looking foward to hearing Cold Roses.

Wilco- Sky Blue Sky. I've liked this since the beginning, but this weekend I went to the beach and played it on the deck in the dark to a couple of folks who hadn't heard it yet. We listened to it three times straight and shot watermelon vodka throughout. A whole new appreciation.

Yeah, I've been meaning to say how it's growing on me, posssibly into my favourite Wilco record (though I like the half of Summerteeth a friend put on tape for me). Can imagine it going well with watermelon vodka (what a great idea!). Very low-key for the most part, but with some really memorable songs. I almost like Jeff Tweedy's voice on it. I much prefer the guitars and have been wondering if this is the work of Tweedy or the other guitarist. there are some trademark sounds and styles that characterise their records, e.g. on the fantastic guitarathon at the end of At Least That's What You Said on the white egg LP.
