Cool choice!
I've been playing Kid A, having seen a Culture Show interview with Thom Yorke, in which he answered the question 'What song do you think is your best?' with How To Disappear Completely, saying it was a beautiful piece where they achieved something really special. Occurred to me I never played it much, anbd actually it is a superb piece. The LP as a whole sounded really good to me. I know several of the songs best via the live renditions on I Might Be Wrong, so it was nice to revisit. Title track is fabulous, and Idioteque sounds better than ever. What was all the fuss about at the time? It's mostly accessible and memorable, and very well sequenced.

I was just listening to the single "Black Magic" which is pretty great, but gee, its a pretty hefty sample from "Crimson and Clover" aint it?

Some tracks are definitely better than others, but I think Burke's approach is really fresh. Soul singers have recorded country songs before, but I think this is the first album I've heard where a soul singer is backed by an all-out country band with no efforts to completely rearrange the songs. I also respect the fact that Burke opted to do songs by Jim Lauderdale, Buddy & Julie Miller, Gillian Welch, etc. instead of yet another version of "Cold, Cold Heart" or "You Don't Know Me."
I think my only main criticism of the album is that Burke shouldn't have felt compelled to include so many duets.

This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

I did exactly the same myself. Great record and the sequencing issue is a very valid point. As a record it ebbs and flows at all the right moments. Top stuff. Amnesiac soon, I think.Otis Westinghouse wrote:Cool choice!

Working back through some Wilco stuff at the moment as I've just finished reading the biog, 'Learning How To Die' and have 'The Wilco Book' lined up for a thumb-through before the Joe Strummer autobiog arrives. Tempted to watch 'I Am Trying To Break Your Heart' again.
Anyone got the 'Man In The Sand' Wilco / Bragg DVD about the Mermaid Avenue sessions? Is it any good?
I know we've agreed this before Jackson, but your damn right there, one of my alltime favourite records , for sheer listenability , grooviness, pop hooks and hum/sing - alongliness! Its everything I love about pop music. Should be compulsory to own it.
