Re: Elvis & The Imposters, Byron Bay Bluesfest (Australia), April 2023
A very welcome return to Australia for Elvis and the Imposters. Their last appearance there was in 2014.
I note that when Elvis and the Imposters played the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Byron Bay in 2011, they played two shows on successive nights. On the second night, the Secret Sisters (who were the opening act for other dates on that tour) joined them to add some vocal colour.
As Larkin Poe are also on the bill for the Byron Bay BluesFest in 2023, perhaps we can look forward to them appearing with Elvis again? They last appeared with Elvis (on Detour) in 2016 and with Elvis and The Imposters in 2015. Or perhaps given their current success, it should be Elvis appearing with them?

So the Australian tour kicks off on Thursday in Byron Bay.
Also appearing at the Bluesfest festival, are Larkin Poe, Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle. Will any of them join Elvis on stage, or will he join them?
Anyone going?

A note from Elvis Costello:
“We are so disappointed not to be returning to the stages at Byron Bay, where we had plans to surprise you with a few friends joining the show. It is maddening these unfortunate but unavoidable circumstances mean that our three sold-out nights at Sydney Opera House and a return to the Palais in St. Kilda, which was also sold out, must also be rescheduled. We are sorry for any inconvenience and hope that the wait will seem worthwhile when we return. Yours through music.” Elvis Costello & The Imposters (and their pal, Charlie Sexton).
Refunds will be available should you not wish to attend the rescheduled performances. Bluesfest only refunds one-day tickets for up to 30 days after the event.

Bluesfest 2024 – Thursday & Friday
Elvis Costello & The imposters played a couple of great ninety minute shows on Thursday and Friday. Originally scheduled for Bluesfest 2023 before cancelling due to illness, Costello joked early in the show “sorry our flight was a bit delayed”. The Imposters have become an incredibly tight live unit, and the addition of “special guest” Charlie Sexton on guitar and sweet backing vocals really puts them over the top. Both shows were fairly similar, but Friday was probably the better of the two with the band hitting the stage roaring to go. Elvis seemed much looser at this second show, dressed in a kilt. Both sets featuring a lengthy almost dub reggae breakdown of “Watching the Detectives” with keyboardist Steve Nieve blasting out the songs melody on a handheld melodica. Costello took to acoustic guitar, with bass player Davey Faragher on double bass, as the band gathered centre stage for a mid-show unplugged set with stripped renditions of “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes” on Thursday and “Alison” on Friday. Both shows including a cover of Mose Alison’s “Everybody’s Crying Mercy” and ended with the band blasting through “(I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea” and “What’s So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding”.
