Instead of watching a three hour movie about Elvis Presley, hit play on today’s episode for a shorter but no less exhaustive deep dive on the real Elvis, Elvis Costello, as actor/comedian and host of the great Dead Eyes podcast Connor Ratliff joins me to make the case for what he considers the ultimate Elvis album, 1991's 'Mighty Like a Rose'. We talk about the album’s underrated place in the Costello canon, I check in with the album’s producer Mitchell Froom for his memories of making the record, Elvis’s dramatic change of look and how it impacted the way the record was received, how the album showcases every string on Costello’s bow, the Costello/McCartney that never was and more.

Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

With all of the other Warners EC vinyl reissues of late, I have to assume reissues of Kojak and Useless Beauty are not far behind.

Re: Mighty Like A Rose 2022 reissue on gold vinyl
I heard this reissue and I’m underwelmed: Warner crammed more than thirty minutes of music on side 1 and as a result the vocals and guitars are sharp and loud, the bass and drums sound thin.
Why didn’t they press it on two LP’s, like they did with the Brutal Youth vinyl reissue and the Spike vinyl reissue? For instace, “… This Town…”, which sound is comparable with some of the songs on Mighty Like A Rose, has great separation and detail without sounding too loud or harsh.
The sound on side two seems a little better (side two lasts about 22 minutes), but the only songs that sound warm with a lot of detail (and better than I remembered) are the slow and acoustic “After The Fall” and “Broken”.
A missed oportunity!!

Isn’t there a world vinyl shortage? I’m sure Warners would have milked it otherwise.
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?

Is Warner to blame for that or MOV? The latter has the distribution licence? Do they have the freedom to decide whether the release is 1 or 2 discs? Who decided to have Spike on 2 discs? I honestly don't know ...sweetest punch wrote:I heard this reissue and I’m underwelmed: Warner crammed more than thirty minutes of music on side 1 and as a result the vocals and guitars are sharp and loud, the bass and drums sound thin.

https://twitter.com/ElvisCostello/statu ... RjJ4QIN5KQReally mystified why these gimmicky, opportunistic releases are being punted out to “specialist” vinyl imprints by WB. These are CD era recordings that took advantage of the larger canvas. (1 of 2) ELVIS COSTELLO - MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE - Music On Vinyl
https://twitter.com/ElvisCostello/statu ... TRM7Pg3kBwWB have never consulted or asked for the involvement of the artist, missing the opportunity to make these worthwhile double-vinyl editions. Do not patronize. They are just making up the numbers. ELVIS COSTELLO - MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE - Music On Vinyl
Sorry, Elvis. Too late.

social media wisecracks by the artist at the expense of the label. That solves it ...

Re: Mighty Like A Rose 2022 reissue on gold vinyl
I would assume that a double LP MLAR edition would still be possible, once this version sells out? (Which I assume it will, given that this is the 2nd pressing Music On Vinyl has done, and the first one has been out-of-print for years).
I own a copy of the 1991 LP (which is also only a single platter) but since it's my favorite EC album, I would happily buy a deluxe double LP 45rpm edition of MLAR if they put one out.
Given that they did double LPs for both Brutal Youth and Spike, it seems like MOV would be at least *open* to the discussion of doing artist-approved editions, right? (Unless I'm totally mistaken and they have deliberately/knowingly defied Costello's wishes for MLAR and TJL...)

I know that Elvis might not have been involved in this release, but it does really good - much better than any CD I've had of MLAR. Some songs sound so good that you would almost think they were remixed. I think it just that the separation is much better.
I really don't think it is the medium that is the determining factor (analog vs. digital). I'm guessing that the mastering onto these vinyl releases is just so much better that the crappy sounding CDs they put out. I recorded the album 24/96 into my computer, I can down-res to 16/44, throw it on a CD, and it will sound so better than the official CDs.

Great to hear! I'm looking forward to receiving this release next month!Miclewis wrote:I know that Elvis might not have been involved in this release, but it does really good - much better than any CD I've had of MLAR. (What are the chances E.C. listened to this release before he decided to knock it publically? )
