Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
So very much hoping that my friends who travel to see them, as several did last week, were not terribly affected this week. Hate the word cancellation any time i hear it. For those with tickets, i am wishing postponements is the better suited word in this instance, and that any make-up dates work well for you. Fingers crossed. Gee, also, and i guess MUCH more importantly...got to be somewhat distressed by doctors orders. HE NEEDS TO REST AFTER SURGERY LAST MONTH. Lordy, let us pray for his good health for years to come. Even if it means seeing him live in person a lot less often.

Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
Thanks BA , as always health and well being are of greater importance than merely having to forgo the cost of a train ticket. I’d rather see Elvis in fine form, which he had been even up until his last night in Newcastle but he looked worn and frail - not words I’d ever associate with him - and talking only in a very subdued voice. Even so he took time to talk to folk afterwards, joking with colinb’s daughter about having sons her age and posing for a photo with her, so professional and gracious. Just hoping abs praying he can rest up until the new album is out and he can recover in his own good time !
Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
I dunno....these cancellations/postponements seem to have gotten more frequent in recent years. Does anyone know what his surgery was for?

Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
After the cancellation of Dalhalla and Pula, I think the European tour will end after the gigs in Austria.

Manchester bites the dust
My sister has just arrived in Croatia and sent me a photo of a poster advertising the gig.

Some strangely worded responses from Elvis's Twitter account in this thread

Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
There have been some fiery tweets from Elvis around this* - sounds as though Paul Heaton might have announced Elvis's cancellation ahead of Elvis's official announcement. And it sounds as though the rest of the tour is off.
* fiery tweets not directed at Paul Heaton, but at a fan who has criticised the cancellation. Also the use of 'if anyone cares', as if he's pissed off about something.

I had a bad hunch when i saw E as the opener for this NO NAME four or five months back!!! Would much rather this turn into a piss filled hate-a-thon Jake 1978 style with this dweeb Heaton or whomever irked our boy, of course, than have it be ANY true EC or Imps health related scare!!! PLEASE....
Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
P.S. The illness might not be Elvis's. Whatever, here's wishing Elvis and his family, friends and colleagues well x
Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
To be fair, Paul Heaton has had bigger UK chart success than Elvis, first in The Housemartins and then The Beautiful South. You might not have heard of him because he never made it big in the US.bronxapostle wrote:I had a bad hunch when i saw E as the opener for this NO NAME four or five months back!!! Also, Paul Heaton has often cited Elvis as one of his heroes.

Finally, EC is listening to doctor’s orders and resting. I was surprised he followed through with some of these gigs. I mmediately thought... typical dude not listening to doc’s orders. Hope he can rest/relax and get back out there for the US tour later this year and if can’t handle those dates, then cancel them too. Health is more important than entertaining losers like us, oh wait me. Happy Indepenebce Day to US citizens on the board. Time to Q it up!

I figured he had to be somewhat popular in the UK, but yes, Neil, i do not know of him.
Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
I dunno, it's hard to tell. Yeah, quite likely the Austrian/Norwegian dates will be the last of the tour, but they would have been anyway (barring one final gig in Sweden, which has also been cancelled). If he goes ahead and plays the dates he hasn't so far cancelled, he'll have managed 15 of the 20 planned dates. The cancelled dates have been two blocks of two (one consecutive nights, one of two gigs in three nights) and the last date of the tour. In between which he's returned to the fray for a spell of three-or-four gigs, in blistering form by all accounts. So it's difficult to interpret.Ymaginatif wrote:This sounds bad ... real bad ...

Indeed, it’s difficult to interpret.
Yesterday in Antwerp, he spoke very enthousiastically about the new album and he said that he was looking forward to returning back and playing all the new songs for us.

I'm not convinced by the words "in blistering form by all accounts". Some of our esteemed forum members have begged to differ.Hawksmoor wrote:I dunno, it's hard to tell. A 'reliable source' told me yesterday 'that is it nothing to worry about in the long term and Elvis just needs rest' . Another poster on Facebook seems to think his mum isn't very well

I think he's tried to do too much too soon following [vocal?] surgery but this is purely conjecture on my part.

You should check out some of the Beautiful South albums--they're very good, with a nice combination of toe-tapping tunes and cynical lyrics. Welcome to the Beautiful South and 0898 are a couple of my favorites.bronxapostle wrote:I figured he had to be somewhat popular in the UK, but yes, Neil, i do not know of him.
Who put these fingerprints on my imagination?
Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
I'm a UK resident and longtime Housemartins fan from back in the day. I bought and enjoyed the first three, maybe four, Beautiful South LPs, and went to see them a few times. Then, one time, can't even remember whether it was a BS gig or PH solo, anyway, it would have been mid-1990s. And for some reason I just looked at him half-way through the gig and thought 'you're a [redacted for politeness]'. Who knows why, can't even say myself. Completely irrational. But since then I have taken no interest in his career or his records, and the thought of him headlining above Elvis was appalling.Harry Lime wrote:You should check out some of the Beautiful South albums--they're very good, with a nice combination of toe-tapping tunes and cynical lyrics. ELVIS COSTELLO FORCED TO CANCEL REMAINING EUROPEAN DATES
Elvis Costello has been forced to cancel the remaining 6 dates of his
current European tour on medical grounds. His doctor has strongly
advised him to take a break from his current tour itinerary and rest.
Ticket holders should go to point of purchase for refunds.
Elvis apologises to his fans and releases the following statement:
“Six weeks ago my specialist called me and said, "You should start
playing the Lotto". He had rarely, if ever, seen such a small but very
aggressive cancerous malignancy that could be defeated by a single surgery.
I was elated and relieved that our European summer tour could go ahead.
Post-surgical guidelines for such surgery, recommend three weeks to four
weeks recovery depending on whether you are returning to a desk job or
an occupation that involves physical work or travel.
It was impossible to judge how this advisory would line up with the
demands on a traveling musician, playing 90-minute to 2-hour plus performances
on a nightly basis but by the time we reached the Edinburgh Playhouse, I was
almost fooled into thinking that normal service had been resumed.
I have to thank our friends attending last night's show in Amsterdam and
those in Antwerp, Glynde and at Newcastle City Hall for bearing me up.
The spirit has been more than willing but I have to now accept that it is
going to take longer than I would have wished for me to recover my full strength.
Therefore, I must reluctantly cancel all the remaining engagements of this tour.
My apologies go to our ticket holders in Manchester, Pula, Graz, Vienna,
Tysnes and Rattvik but I would rather disappoint our friends there by
not appearing than in pressing on with a show that is compromised and
eventually puts my health at risk.
My deep thanks go to Pete Thomas, Steve Nieve and Davey Faragher of The
Imposters for all their deep friendship, love and support during this
upsetting time. Thanks also to Kitten Kuroi and Briana Lee whose beautiful voices
have spurred me on to do the singing that I've managed, whatever the cost. It
goes without saying that there are many others who have worked to get us
to the stage and from town to town to whom I am also deeply grateful.
To leave you with some more optimistic news, The Imposters and I -
together with several of our other friends - have made a magnificent new
record of which we are truly proud. It will be issued in October, I
believe. We will return at the soonest opportunity to play that music
and your favourite songs that still make sense to us all.
Take very good care of your loved ones but Gentleman, do talk to you
friends - you'll find you are not alone - seek your doctor's advice if
you are in doubt or when it is timely and act as swiftly as you may in
these matters. It may save your life. Believe me, it is better than
playing roulette."
Yours through music. Elvis Costello”

Re: Elvis and the Imposters European Tour 2018
So, it is as we probably feared but were afraid to name. However, it does sound very positive in terms of it having been dealt with, and hopefully some rest and recuperation will see him back to full health. Disappointment at cancelled gigs obviously pales into insignificance at this news, and I'm sure we all wish Elvis every possible goodwill for a full recovery.
