Coverage in the London Evening Standard tonight of a pub in Nunhead, South East London, which has been bought by its customers. There was also coverage back in January in Time Out magazine:
http://now-here-this.timeout.com/2013/0 ... n-nunhead/
The Pub is the Ivy House, previously the Newlands Tavern. http://ivyhousenunhead.com/
Several reports suggest that the pub played host to a wealth of musicians before they became famous including Ian Dury, Elvis Costello, Joe Strummer and Dr Feelgood. The print version of the article http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/d ... 40278.html in the Evening Standard tonight included a photo of EC.
The Gigography suggests that it was back in his Flip City days (1974-75) that EC played this venue.

I'm currently reading the Paul Weller special collectors' edition Ultimate Music Guide and on page 22 is a review of All Mod Cons (released 3rd November 1978) which says "At a few other points, it's hard to avoid wishing someone had urged Weller back to his notepad. "It's too bad" is a pulsing, Attractions-like performance which deserved better than a lyric of which the clear highlight is the rhyme of "break up with make up.

Very cool performance....I've never heard those lyrics from the second verse. What's he saying?Azmuda wrote:Shipbuilding - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IaW_35qD10johnfoyle wrote:A feature on the Red Wedge Tour (1986) in the new Mojo has this gruesome image

Linda Ronstadt - Mad Love
I think the Elvis Costello songs get the most shit from the cool kids, but I always appreciated the fact that Linda got a lot of my friends to listen to Elvis Costello songs, when I had tried and often failed to get them interested. Sure, Girls Talk is pretty hostile in Elvis' hands, but Linda adds an outsider feel to it that actually makes it sad. The other Elvis songs, Party Girl and Talking in the Dark generally work, but for completely different reasons that they work for Elvis (like Girls Talk, I suppose). Talking in the Dark ends the record on a happy note and Party Girl takes on a whole new persona with Linda taking the role of the Party Girl. The other songs aren't as good as these five, but they're better than a lot of other choices Linda has made on other albums. They work for me, anyway.

Just received Erich Selheim's recordings of MAIT & TYM (original albums + reissue extras!) in German. So far they sound rather good. The backing tracks are, essentially, the same as the originals. Limited as my German is, the mere difference of sound in such familiar material serves to renew them. Erich sent me these in trade for bootlegs.

Not exactly current, but I bring it to your attention anyway:
Back in December 2007, the good people of Cologne (or Köln if you'd rather) were able to enjoy a performance of "The Juliet Letters" by the Agrippina Quartet featuring Nadia Maria Fischer. They don't seem to have performed it since, and there is no indication of whether this was sung in English, German or something in between (which would be my bet).
More details (but not much more) here:
http://www.altes-pfandhaus.de/programm/ ... scher.html
The Agrippina Quartet are: Adrian Bleyer & Caro Kunfalvi violin, Hartmut Frank viola, Rainer Lange cello

Industry Profile: Bill Bragin
Most memorable industry experience
Too many to recount. Standing at the side of the stage at SummerStage watching Elvis Costello with Nick Lowe on one side of me and Suzanne Vega on the other and thinking, "this is my life", when the centerpiece of my Bar Mitzvah table was a Styrofoam sculpture of Elvis was a pretty loft realization.

Fantastic! Thanks.
I'm not a big fan of Kaiser Chiefs - I've always thought they were over-rated but they've gone up 1000 times in my estimation.
And Ricky Wilson is reading the lyrics from a phone!

I would be very surprised if the early Costello albums weren't big influences on the band.
