This picture of EC is not of him outside the Vanity/Perfume Factory but the main doors of the Hoover Factory. I remember the London Sunday Times using this picture (or a similar variation) in their big article in their Magazine in late 77/early 78. Lovely to see it again after all these years.

Yes , indeed. The image is used here , however, since , as earlier in the thread is detailed, I went on from the Vanity Factory to the Hoover Factory.

Myself, my brother and a few friends used to have a yearly trip from South London to the Cheltenham races. And we had to pass the Hoover Factory. Every year without fail we would all sing the first couple of lines of the song, even the few that were not Elvis fans. As we passed it. (normally too pissed or asleep to sing it on the way back)

So fellas, how was the meetup? Where did you end up going in the end, and who came? (by that I don't mean the meetup was overwhelmingly exciting... though I'm sure it was, in a platonic way).

I hope that didn't come across as rude - it was a saucy joke born out of the phrase 'who came?' - i.e. you might've thought I meant you'd got so overwhelmingly excited, that people... well... 'came'.

(There's nothing much more pathetic than when a joke has to be explained, is there? Tragic. I'll draw a veil over it!)

Elvis Has Left the Building -Jaguar Freight Services Has Arrived
Global supply chain solutions leader moves London Center of Operational Excellence to refurbished Elizabeth Arden factory where Elvis Costello once worked

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y., Dec 10, 2012 -- Jaguar Freight Services, a leader at designing and operating custom transportation systems and strategies for world class supply chain management, has relocated its London-based European Center of Operational Excellence (COE) to the completely refurbished former Elizabeth Arden factory in Acton, London - a location made famous in pop culture by rock giant Elvis Costello, who worked there during the 1970s.

The London COE is home base for the Jaguar Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) regional organization, headed by Alan Baldwin (Director of Operations). Its operational responsibility includes the company's Paris and London offices, plus a network of agents in nearly 20 countries throughout the region. The London COE team oversees Jaguar Freight's integrated door-to-door freight solutions throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East, featuring the company's proprietary CyberTrax(TM) online information tracking system as the cornerstone of a transportation management infrastructure that coordinates every phase of the supply chain process.

"Even though Elvis Costello's 'I'm Not Angry' lyrics called the old location the 'vanity factory,' Jaguar Freight's move to new state-of-the-art offices at The Perfume Factory is anything but vanity - it has real and tangible benefits for our customers," said Simon Kaye, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Jaguar Freight. "The creative office space design will facilitate both our own operations and our ability to interact effectively for the companies we serve. As we launch the new international version of our Advance Shipment Notifications (ASN) online portal for inbound shipment tracking, and increase our UK-based sales force, The Perfume Factory's ability to accommodate expanded technology and personnel will provide a real advantage."

[This goes on, but you get the idea....]

Art deco perfume factory in north Acton to become 500 build-to-rent flats

JONATHAN PRYNN

February 9th 2016

An Art Deco former perfume factory is to be turned into London’s biggest ever “build-to-rent” housing development.

There will be more than 500 homes, exclusively for rent, at the 2.8-acre site in north Acton after Ealing councillors approved the £200 million scheme.

It is centred on the former Elizabeth Arden factory, which opened in 1939 and where singer Elvis Costello worked as a computer clerk in the Seventies.

The planning consent is being seen as a breakthrough for London’s small but growing build-to-rent sector.

Boris Johnson and the Government want City institutions to invest in European-style “rent-only” developments to boost the supply of homes for private tenants who cannot afford to buy.

The Perfume Factory scheme — designed by London architects Squire and Partners for specialist developer Essential Living — includes two towers of 33 and 27 storeys, and a mix of homes from studios to four-bed mews houses. It will also have 70,000 sq ft of commercial space and is due for completion in 2019. A spokesman for Essential Living said rents had not yet been set but will be in line with local market levels of about £1,500 to £1,700 a month for a two-bedroom flat.

Martin Bellinger, the company’s chief operating officer, said the planning approval “highlights the growing ability of the build-to-rent sector to make a very real contribution to Britain’s housing needs, while providing renters with a new service-led offer that treats them like customers for the first time”.

Essential Living is backed by US pension funds and other institutional investors. Its first scheme, Vantage Point Archway Tower in Islington, opens in June.

London’s private rental sector is dominated by small-scale landlords. But Melanie Leech, chief executive of the British Property Federation, said: “Since the start of the year, there has been investment in the build-to-rent sector on a scale that we have never seen before.”

Last month, Legal & General announced a tie-up with Dutch fund manager PGGM to invest £600 million in build-to-rent with the aim of constructing 3,000 homes.

Displacing the poor for crap "lux" apts... Where will the poor and needy live? There goes the neighborhood.. once the millennials take over with their heads in a device oblivious to what's happening around them. We have that kind of thing going on here, too. What's up with the cushion on the lawn space thingy... totally lame. Peace.

I'm not a big fan of gentrification, either, but this is a commercial/industrial building that never housed any people, poor or otherwise. In its latest incarnation as a (wannabe) creative-class office space (have I got that about right?), it doesn't sound like it employed many poor people, either.

My impression from the reportage on this thread is that, while North Acton is not seedy or even overly scruffy, it has stubbornly retained it's unglamorous, down-marketing character despite some enterprising real estate developers' best efforts. We'll see who wins the upcoming round...

To expand on my comment, why not renovate the industrial building into low to moderate income housing, not lux apts for most likely high tech / new world order millennials? Can an English high school teacher or social worker afford 1500 pounds (= $2K a month) for a 1 bedroom apt? I'm not familiar with the area or how salaries are paid out in the UK, so wtf do I know. I'm just assuming the same stuff happening here on the US west coast will spread across major metros in the US as well as around the world. Greed has no borders or boundaries.. This image has been floating around my FB newsfeed. I drive past these tents often and it's very sad and disturbing. Keeping it cheery, MOJO
