Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Early Live ‘77

Another uncirculated tape from Andy’s archives. Well, okay then, my box
of cassettes in the loft.
This tape was recorded in the cellar of the Hope and Anchor pub in
north London (Upper Street, Islington) on July 27th 1977.
I warn you now; it's a little rough, but I've heard a lot worse. The
sound is, at least, consistent. There's no warbling or drop-outs or cuts
due to tape-flipping. Actually, I'm being unfair. It's not bad at all.
It was the band’s first proper gig in front of a paying London
audience. They’d done two warm-ups in the West Country (Penzance and Plymouth)
and one in Manchester. The night before this, they played in front of
“fucking liggers at Dingwalls” in Camden.
The Dingwalls show has never turned up on trade-lists, and nor have the
West Country and Manchester dates, so I can only surmise that this is
the earliest live recording of the band. I would be delighted to be
proved wrong.
If you’ve never been to the Hope and Anchor, it has a tiny cellar that
holds about 75-80 people uncomfortably. The ceiling is very, very low
and the ventilation dreadful. Bad news when you’re trying to hide a huge
(by today’s standards) cassette recorder under your woollen coat. In
July.
Anyway, I’ve never circulated this recording before, although I have
seen an incomplete version on a few trade lists (Radio Sweetheart is
missing). They didn’t get it from me, so maybe that one is of better
quality.
I was standing very close to the speakers (it’s hard not to, really) so
there’s some high-end distortion, but it’s not too bad.
If you only like your Elvis to be soundboard, forget this one. If you
like your Elvis rare, very early, previously uncirculated and a little
rough round the edges, this is the one for you.

I have included artwork, in MS-Word format, for a jewel-case. I have
included a scan of my ticket from that night, dated from the previous
night! I’ve also put on a scan of the cassette from that night. I hope you
like it all.

This is definitely very interesting...and the Attractions' backing vocals are so bad (just listen to Sneaky Feelings ) that it's not difficult to see why Elvis preferred to sing alone until the arrival of Davey. I'm also happy that the Straussian harpsichord was later dropped from Alison.

I think this is the first time I've heard Crawling To The USA live, and the lyrics are very different to the version I already know. Is it available on another boot ?

If you listen to the very last song, you'll find Elvis actually agreeing to a request - a first and last !
Where's North from 'ere?
