Best opening line of a song
Just read the very interesting thread posted by Crow entitled "Revenge And Guilt A Speciality" -the Elvis interview in which he gives his opinion of the best opening song line.
Heres one of my my favourite opening lines by Elvis from 'Next time round'
"As I stepped out upon the landing my heart was already down the stairs"
What an image that counjures up and grabs your interest immediately cos you want to know why! I'd be interested to hear your favourite opening lines from Elvis or anyone else for that matter.

While out sailing on the ocean, while out sailing on the sea
I bumped into the Saviour and He said "pardon me."
I said, "Jesus, you look tired," and he said "jesus! so do you!
Won't you sit down kid cos I got some fat to chew."
John Prine, Everybody
it just makes me smile every single time.

Like me, the "g" is silent.

Non-Elvis openers I like :
Billy Bragg - Sexuality
"I've had relations with girls from many nations
I've made passes at women of all classes"
The Beautiful South - Something That You said
"The perfect love song, it has no words, it has only death threats
And you can tell a classic ballad by how threatening it gets"

"'Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream', she said
'The one that makes me laugh', she said."

I love that song. And it comes from one of my favourite albums from Beautiful South - "0898". Highly recommended.Ooh, Polska, that Beautiful South song sounds interesting...

I could go on about Plaistow Patricia again, but won't (saving the precious ears of minors, and all that)...
How about one from a song of suspicion and heartache (what, another one?)...
"Here I am in your room, going through your stuff, you said you'd be gone five minutes, that's time enough..."
from Cold Kisses by Richard Thompson

"Thrown like a star in my vast sleep
I open my eyes to take a peep
To find that I was by the sea
Gazing with tranquillity..."
'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form.
"Come in," she said "I'll give you shelter from the storm..."

echos myron like a siren
with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load
