Walk Like A Penguin...
Chrissie has recorded the Bread song "Everything I Own", as part of a duet with Elvis Costello. The song will appear in an animated film called 'Happy Feet', sung by penguins. The film's release is planned for 2006.

That is one of the most insipid songs I have ever heard.

Wow. Elvis, I hope the check is a large one. One saving grace is that even singing "The Happy Birthday Song" with Chrissie is probably a great experience...one of the grande damme's of 'new wave' (sorry, but never could classify the Pretenders as 'punk').

I have no problem with Bread. Part of their scene at the time, and wrote a couple of great melodies.

In college, I had a cassette with Best of Bread and the Best of America that came out at those special times when cuddling music was required.

Ahem. That's funny. I don't remember Bread or America. I only remember him dragging out the Barry Manilow Live. :?

"Ventura Highway" is cuddling music?

Anyhow, I was always partial to Telly "Who Loves Ya Baby" Savalas's reading of "If". If a picture paints a thousand words....

Bread co-founder Jimmy Griffin dies
Guitarist co-wrote Oscar-winning 'For All We Know'

Friday, January 14, 2005 Posted: 8:24 AM EST (1324 GMT)

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- James Arthur "Jimmy" Griffin, who was a founding member of the 1970s pop group Bread and shared an Oscar for co-writing "For All We Know," died of complications from cancer. He was 61.

Griffin, who died Tuesday at his home in Franklin, sang harmony and played guitar with Bread, whose soft-rock hits included "Make It With You," "Baby I'm-a Want You" and "Everything I Own," written by the group's lead singer, David Gates.

"For All We Know," from the movie "Lovers and Other Strangers," won a 1970 Academy Award and was a hit for the Carpenters. Griffin also wrote such country hits as Conway Twitty's "Who's Gonna Know" and Restless Heart's "You Can Depend On Me."

Griffin was raised in Memphis and moved to Hollywood, California, in the early 1960s. He, David Gates and Robb Royer released Bread's debut album in 1968.

Griffin left the band in 1973 and rejoined in 1976 before it broke up in a swirl of rancor and lawsuits.

In the 1980s, Griffin formed Black Tie with former Eagles member Randy Meisner, and he became a regular on the Nashville scene in the early 1990s with the band the Remingtons.

He is survived by his wife, Marti, a daughter and a son.

You sheltered me from harm.
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, Set me free
The finest years I ever knew
were all the years I had with you

I would give anything I own,
Give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own,
just to have you back again.

You taught me how to love,
What its of, what its of.
You never said too much,
but still you showed the way,
and I knew from watching you.
Nobody else could ever know
the part of me that can't let go.

I would give anything I own,
Give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again.

Is there someone you know,
you're loving them so,
but taking them all for granted.
You may lose them one day,
someone takes them away,
and they don't hear the words you long to say

I would give anything I own,
Give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again.
Just to touch you once again

The biggest hit version of this song in the UK was by Ken Boothe. This reggae version of the song spent 3 weeks at no 1 in 1974. 13 years later Boy George spent 2 weeks at no 1 with another reggae version of the song.
I must confess to not being familiar with the original.
I'm sure Elvis and Chrissie can do better than the above as long as they:-
1. do it in a reggae style
2. release it in late spring/early summer
3. record a video on a Carribean island with lots of semi-naked young ladies dancing on the beach along with penguins and monkeys
and
4. include a Shaggy rap half way through.

This is odd. Billboard reports that the "Happy Feet" soundtrack will be out October 31. It refers to "Everything I Own" and Chrissie Hynde, but it doesn't mention Elvis at all!
Elsewhere, Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams and Fantasia team up on Stevie Wonder's "I Wish," Jason Mraz's cover of the Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" is mashed up with the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde's version of Bread's "Everything I Own" and actress Brittany Murphy tackles Queen's "Somebody To Love" and the Earth, Wind & Fire classic "Boogie Wonderland."

Here is the track list for "Happy Feet":

"Song of the Heart," Prince
"Hit Me Up," Gia Farrell
"Tell Me Something Good," Pink
"The Joker," Jason Mraz / Mashup with "Everything I Own," Chrissie Hynde
"I Wish," Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams, Fantasia
"Boogie Wonderland," Brittany Murphy
"Somebody To Love," Brittany Murphy
"My Way (A Mi Manera)," Robin Williams
"Do It Again," Beach Boys
"Jump N' Move," Brand New Heavies featuring Jamalski
"Kiss," Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman / Mashup with "Heartbreak Hotel," Hugh Jackman
"Golden Slumbers," k.d. lang
"The Story of Mumble Happyfeat," written and produced by John Powell
Was Elvis' contribution dropped? Never recorded? Is he featured on the track but in a lesser capacity than we had been led to believe (such as on background vocals)?
