The first records I remember having were Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby and Two Little Boys by Rolf Harris, these would both have been bought by my parents (not cool). I don't clearly recall what the first record that I bought was, althouigh it could have been Blockbuster by Sweet, or a Slade single.

45: I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song - Jim Croce
I was in the fourth grade. I used to hold up a stick and pretend it was a microphone and sing it while dancing across my living room. I remember doing that one day and when the song finished, there stood my parents applauding me. I felt so violated! That was supposed to be my own personal performance.

1972 - "White Album" by the Beatles. I was in second grade. I saved change for six months to accumulate the loot. I don't really remember why, but I just had a compulsion to own it. I think my parents were horrified, because their Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass from then on shared time with the Lads on the immense console "stereo." The rest, as they say, is history.
P.S. I still have it, and it's in great shape.

album: 'American Graffiti' soundtrack, when I was 10.
45: Elton John 'Benny and The Jets', I think. My mom commenced a first-class rant when she thought the line was "She's got electric boobs", started yelling about the dissolution of civilized society, and that a 10-year-old could get hold of such pornography portended the end of the world. She snatched the record off the player, and broke it in half in very dramatic fashion. She's very emotional, my mom.
The first album I have any memory at all of, though, is Beatles' 'Rubber Soul', but it was my brother's.

I think mine must've been a Bros or Chesney Hawks (sp?) tape. I do remember totally loving the Gene Pitney and Marc Almond one (I forget what it's called). Oooh, and the Bee Gees' You Win Again . Hahahaha.
The music I remember being played in the house was my dad's vinyl of The Northern Beat (The Merseybeats' I Think Of You rules), and my ma's original copy of the first Small Faces album. The Small Faces, the Stones and The Swinging Blue Jeans are what I remember most.

"Cosmic Thing" by the B-52's. I was in the 5th grade. Everyone thought I was a nerd, but to this day, "Dry County" is one of the coolest songs ever.
Oh, and I hope this doesn't count--one of my cousins gave me MC Hammer's first album on tape when I was, like, 8. I really wanted it, until I listened to it. I gave it back.

The Year of the Cat on cassette by Al Stewart. My brother 'let' me order it from his record club. I paid of course.
First single was probably "With a Little Luck" by Macca and Wings
First vinyl: Some KTel compilation off the TV. I remember it had Kiss, KC and the Sunshine Band, the Addrissi Brothers, Climax Blues Band and maybe a Bee Gees tune. Oh yeah, and that song "Torn Between Two Lovers".

The first album? My dad picked out "Pearl" for me from a record club when I was probably about 7 or 8. I think the first 45 I bought was Fleetwood Mac 'You Make Loving Fun.' I lived in the sticks in Missouri and listened to WLS at night (couldn't pick it up any other time). And I had a k-tel record too and I wish I still had it--'Chick-a-boom' was on it!!!!!
Like me, the "g" is silent.

Since I was born in '79 I grew up either listening to my twin sister's crap (New Kids, Mariah Carey, MC Hammer, Madonna, and (gasp!) Milli Vanilli...BUT they were HERS, I did not own them!!!), OR my metalhead brother blasting AC/DC, Judas Priest and the like... I did buy the Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation tape in Grade 5....but I was too young to know better... !
I officially count my first album purchases as U2 - Achtung Baby (1991, I was in grade 7, and my U2 obsession began) and Barenaked Ladies - Gordon (how Canadian of me!)...I think at the time I wasn't really that *into* music, just listening to whatever my friends liked, and buying the U2 album started my love affair with music...plus, my friends thought I was weird (for not listening to Kris Kross or whatever..!) and I liked being the 'different' one...looking back now, maybe it was just a way of differentiating myself from my twin....but I digress....

the first 45 i received was wildwood days by bobby rydell. i was home from kindergarden lying on the couch in the living room everyday for a week with the measles when it was presented to me. i believe the first one i purchased shortly thereafter was i want to hold your hand.
I'm not concerned about the very poor.
