THE NEW IS THIS THREAD DEAD YET?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Yeah, well it's Halloween. I thought I'd start this thread for no reason other than to entertain myself and others. Feel free to join in with anything you might feel is relevant or irrelevant.

Yeah, my first wife was a witch. She almost took it seriously. I'm back living in the same town she lives in, now. I should knock on her door and really scare the shit out of her.

Of course, she'd kill me if she knew I was posting pictures of her and her family.

But this is such an out-of-the-way little forum. She didn't care much for Elvis.

She liked disco.

Anyway, this thread is about keeping this forum alive...specifically, The Annex.

I don't know how the Spooky's do it. I've never donated a dime.

So, if you have something to contribute...curious, strange, silly, stupid, or whatever...why not post it here and give ol' rope leash something to bite on?

Ah, yes...the romanticized vampire!

Post by A rope leash »

Thank you, SoLack...

Now, maybe someone can explain to me this new version of bloodsucking souls, as per Twilight.

Is there suddenly something sexy about getting bitten by a vampire and made into his zombie? I have to imagine that the Hollywood types were thrilled when this new-genre Dracula came about. O boy! Something new to sell to unsuspecting tweenies!

Look kids...this is a vampire...

Sexy? Not supposed to be...

He's not going to pimp you out, he just going to suck your virgin blood. Sure, you'll live forever...as a bloodsucking desparado. That shoud be frightful, not appealing!

Kids nowdays!

I guess I'm just old...

I think the concept may have begun in the soft porn industry and developed from there (so I heard).

I suppose it's not so far-fetched. The neck is quite an erogenous zone...and I guess women in some way still want to be "under the spell" of a man.

But, how does this translate into love? I mean, real love as opposed to infatuation.

Let me ask you...when two vampires do it, is the baby born a vampire?

Re: IS THIS THREAD DEAD YET?

Post by A rope leash »

I reckon no one wants to talk to the old dog. I stink, anyway.

So, I guess I'll talk to myself. Okay, let me tell ya 'bout some of the things I'm goin' through. I know you think that you know but how do you know that what you know is true? Well maybe it's time for getting' out of line well it seems like the right thing to do...

...some people get crazy...

Anyway, I took this temporary job unloading phone books off of semi trailers and into the cars of desperate people suckered into delivering them. It was me and some dated wannabe tatooed gang-banger with control issues. I think he thought we were married or something. Two other guys joined us later in the week, a couple of potheads that tempted me daily with their pipes. We all got a good workout, anyway.

I got along okay with the potheads, but the faux gangster wore on my patience pretty bad. He talked a lot of shit, and we argued loudly, each time ending with his threat to kill me after work. The potheads had similar troubles with this guy. I guess if I ever run into this guy at Wal-Mart, it's going to be down.

Yeah, well they cut the crew to two yesterday, and I voluntered to quit...mostly because I didn't want to get stuck working alone with the idiot bully. The two potheads stayed on, but only after being threatened with their lives if they didn't give up one position to gangbanger-wannabe.

What a jerk-ass.

But, hey...I guess this is California now, eh? Most of these folks delivering these phone books were in some pretty tight straits, I think. I saw a lot of bad tempers out there. A group of Mexicans pissed off a Chinese guy, and he told them to "go back to Mexico." Another group of Mexicans disputed our count, and pushed us aside to load their own...only to bring much of it back the next day.

I met a pretty girl, though.

Fuck 'em.

Last week I went in for a second interview with a company that locates underground utilities. I had already drug tested, and I went ahead and got my California driver's license at their suggestion. Shit, I thought I had this job. When I went in for the second interview (which I thought went very well) the place looked like a doctor's waiting room. They were interviewing an awful lot of people. Have I already told you this? They said they would let me know by early this week. I'm starting to get depressed.

But, that's how it is nowdays, I suppose. I don't think my ex is going to want me mooching too much, so I am probably looking at heading back to the Mississippi pretty soon. I might just give up and let my sister support me while I write the novel. Is there anything essentially wrong with that?

How about you guys? Are you having trouble in this bad economy, or am I just the lucky one?

From my point of view I think it's outrageous that the Lisbon Treaty is being foisted upon us. The Government promised a referendum on it and then reneged on it. The explanation that it was only a "Tidying up exercise" with no significant changes is just absolute rubbish. If the Government genuinely believed this then let both the yes and no camps have their say and the electorate can decide.

I think the whole issues about this and the MPs expenses and the Iraq War and the handling of the economy and so many other issues will come back to haunt this Government come the election this year. What annoys me even more is that we didn't even vote for Gordon Brown.

But anyway, of more importance, going back a bit, I think the lady is turning me anticlockwise. And worryingly turning me on.

The upshot of the treaty is pretty heavy though, as I understand it. It creates a unified government for Europe, making a sort of "United States of Europe". Do I have that correct? Seems like something the people should vote on...but anymore i wonder if the power even cares what the people want.

The lady is moving clockwise for me. Weird, huh? And yes, she's quite fetching for a mere shadow...

Isn't she moving clockwise for everyone? Or is one of those 'you can't believe it's there unless you too see it' things? If so, I can't believe it.

I despise the nationalistic jingoism of this country and relish the prospect of as much unification of Europe as possible to piss all over their anachronistic flowerbeds.

If you think Brown's bad, wait till the grotesque animal that is Cameron gets his unctuous little paws on power.

There was a hysterical interview with WIll Self on Thursday. He's done a new book with Ralph Steadman based on the concept of 'psycho-geography', in homage to JG Ballard. All very interesting, but they only seemed to want to discuss politics and Self's notorious time doing smack in the toilets of John Major's campaign aeroplane. So he played along, observing that the current party leaders were all examples of 'neotomy' - tending towards babyhood, and that surveys show this is popular were all babies: Brown is Old Baby, Cameron is Baby Baby, and Clegg is Bonny Baby. Priceless.

They then wanted to know if they could get him accreditation, would he report on the next election. Self said 'it depends how bottomless your trunk of cash is'. Sublime in that lugubrious voice. For those that can, 2.22 into the Thurs 5 broadcast on Listen Again.

I was surprised by this as well. One of the places I really noticed it was in regards to football. Looking back at video and photographs of 1966 and England's World Cup victory you will see Union Jack's flying everywhere. Today England is more nationalistic and passionate about football than almost anything else - but the Union Jack has been replaced by the St. George's flag - much less inclusive. I know Wales and Scotland and N. Ireland have their own teams, but hasn't this always been the case? Wasn't George Best playing for NI in '66?

To Rope's bigger question and the title of the thread:

Yes - mostly.

A lot of the All Stars have left - including A Rope Leash, El Vez, King Hoarse, Laughing Crow, Self Made Mug, Goody Two Shoes, Pip 52, Miss Buenos Aires, We Hit and Run (kicked off?) - some are long long gone (Taz, Bobster, Sulkygirl and Costello Punk come to mind). I think there are a lot of reasons. As Pophead mentioned - may folks have take their online acts to Facebook. I have as well, but honestly I am not loving that place. And I do see some of the old faces there.

For me - pat of it is I think I'm generally a lot less excited about music than I once was. I'm not seeking new stuff out - and I used to have a raging passion for seeking out old stuff that I hadn't heard, but I've kind of lost that as well. But mostly I think it's because of the the people mentioned above not being here. I have to say, that I am way more likely to open a thread if I see that Oily Slick, So Lacklustre, Verbal Gymnastics or any of old veterans have posted something. And for the most part we are all old farts who have become less interested/intersting. I think the younguns' all have better places to go.

Sob! Hey, BWAP, you've lost your mojo! I felt quite sad reading that. I too miss the buzz of hearing about new stuff here. WSS seems to have stopped collecting! I've never found a better forum for finding about new stuff, though I have looked. I'm resisting ever joining Facebook (I actually signed up so I could surf other people's pages to see who was there, but it meant that just cos my email was there, other people's accounts would automatically sniff out my address and send me an invitation asking me to be their friend - once I'd turned down the 10th offer to be someone's friend, I decided it wasn't for me and deleted myself).

I'm still excited to discover new stuff, but am tending to focus more on what I already have as I'm hearing it all anew on my new gear. I'm listening to lots on Spotify. Shame that doesn't have free access (or any access?) in the US. You guys would like it. I'm also focussed a lot on the covers band I'm playing in - building up to our third gig of the year, my works do, with a whole slew of new songs to master for that.

Re flags, not sure that we're more nationalistic now than then, I think it's mainly devolution in Wales and Scotland that has forced us to develop a sense of English nationhood as opposed to England more or less = Britain, they was a lot of folk overseas think is the case. But I do find the traditional right wing opposition to Europe integration to be appalling, both here and in Czech Republic.

See? That's better...

Post by A rope leash »

There's a little bit of conversation going on here, and that's good.

Sometimes I see the lady turning counter-clockwise, but not often. It's supposed to be some kind of left-right brain thing.

Facebook Facebook Facebook. I guess it's a thing. Try to make yourself look good, eh? No doubt they got all kinds of rules and guidlelines on those kinds of sites. BO-RING!

Anyway, I'm not sure why anyone would want to see a federalized Europe. Seems like every jerkass king from Charlemange to Hitler wanted to "unify" Europe...in any way they could...but now you guys are just going to stand there while the elites leave you out of the discussion. It's all in the name of trade and friendship, but won't someday come when the "Nation of Europe" becomes just another fascist entity off to war with some elite-created enemy-other?

I'm telling you, I just don't get why the people of Europe would want to be homogenized together like some bland pudding. The USA has an image of being a "great nation", but it's all smoke-rings and bullshit. The USA is simply a huge corporate enterprise riding herd over a few million sheep. They shear them once a year and use the proceeds to bomb brown people and take thier resources. There is no real American culture...everything is dominated by a few giant corporations that create marketable "cultures"...it is evident on the airwaves, at the workplace, and off of every Interstate highway exit. For the most part, people love their country but hate their federal and state governments, even though they often get country and government confused.

But, that's how you want sheep.

We should never forget the great Soviet Union. What was the point in that? Does anyone think the USA will never fall apart, that it is "too big to fail"?

Watch out Europe...you're being set up.

Ah, well...screw it anyway. I don't think I'm going to find a job anytime soon, and the ex-wife has gone back to drunk. The temptation now is to get some weed.

Re: IS THIS THREAD DEAD YET?

Does that mean I only have a left brain or a right brain? Worrying.

I'm not referring to a power struggle to create one single nation of Europe, that's bullshit and based on invasion and subterfuge, but I do believe that coming together as a bunch of geographically connected entities for mutually beneficial ends is the only way. In what universe is it desirable for us to use one currency when all around are using a different one? Why are inches preferred to cm? We're too far gone to drive our cars on the right, but if we could we should. Little Englanders- they can screw themselves. Apart from football, of course.

On a different note, there is a terrifying uniformity to young people today, and it's particularly disturbing when it comes to the females. It almost seems that a classless scenario prevails where people are only differentiated by how much money they spend on themselves. Everyone looks like the product of the ultra-materialist late-capitalist world, which means people are essentially consumerist commodities, which in terms of females = the porn industry, therefore the prevailing look is a porn one. I was just looking at my nieces' recent party photos on Facebook, and it's all porn: wide open take-me eyes, pursed felatory mouths, ironed blonde hair, lashings of make-up, miniscule dresses, heels. They've been set up. They're a world away from their mothers' generation when people strived to look alternative, to reject things, to protest and march and stick two fingers up. They're just repositories for consumer items. It's a phase, and after it will come some post-ultra-materialist world where people look like the way they look should express some degree of indvidualism. Sadly it will probably take more recession to bring about a shift. It won't last, I'm sure.

Way to go, Otis!

Post by A rope leash »

I should tell everyone that I don't know anything about Facebook, the Lisbon Treaty, or shadowy girls with erect nipples turning the way of the clock or otherwise.

I just know what I heard.

I'll tell you what, Otis...I can't stand that slut-culture either. The fact that we allow that crap to be foisted on kids is incredible. Trend-mongers should not be allowed to prey on children. We have a whole generation of people with inked-up skin and perforated extremities. They think it is what they are, but they are really just a copy or version of the original monkey. They will look very stupid when they are elderly.

When I was eighteen, (you whippersnappers!)...I would have never dreamed of listening to music that was basically similar to my parents' music. No jazz no way. But the pop music icons of the Sixties and Seventies fell for their own images and insisted that their art was historically significant. That generation sold out, and raised "good little childrens" that have gone on in a futile attempt to capture an update of a young moment in their parents' lives, instead of rejecting the prevailing influences and going on to find a genre of their own.

Sad, but soundly ridiculous.

It's kind of what I don't like about European unified government. A broad consumer culture could develop that would make the great places in Europe lose some of their charm and identity. Trust me, nobody thinks of North Dakota or Utah as anything other than a part of the USA. But, Italy, France, Britian...these are places of their own in my mind. Europe might gain unity, but it might also lose a little appeal.

Well, I'm off to go check the progress...

Looking over the posts from Otis and BWAP - two of my oldest Board Buddies - I agree it's sad that so many people have left. I don't post nearly as often as I used to. I do miss the old days with Lapinsjolis, Plaything, Laughing Crow etc but those fun packed days are gone. We've grown up!

Technology has moved so quickly but I do not wish to be part of Facebook and the like. Everything's so public now.

I've even lost the same desire about collecting Elvis' music.
