I join you by saying that until I saw the printed lyric I always thought a line in Bedlam

Wailing echoes down the corridors

was

Throw your knickers down the corridor
[/quote]

I have to say that for a long period of time I had a hell of a time understanding much of what Elvis was singing in his "older" songs. This probably has something to do with my American ears having trouble deciphering Anglo-speak....or maybe E was drunk and slurry on more than "High Fidelity" and it's not my fault at all! :D Over the years, my ears are much better trained to understand him.....and having easy access to the lyrics doesn't hurt either.

I actually love that one, and after hearing that for 20 years, only recently figured that out!

"You were sharp and ideal as a bobby pin"

A cold line from a cold album. And also something else: http://www.astheygo.com/ecessay25.html

A great essay.
Preacher was a talkin' there's a sermon he gave,
He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved,
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it's you who must keep it satisfied

I dunno...... I have nothing to add to this thread, but....I MUST say, that EC's "wordplay" is what made me fall in love with his songwriting. Clever, sharp-witted, sometimes stinging, sometimes corny - wh cares ??? It was (and is) a breath of fresh air in terms of the music world in general. I absolutely cringe when I hear a song by (insert anyone's name here) that sounds like it was written in the 5 minutes they spent on the crapper (and the song is worth just that). I think that's one of the issues the lovely Mrs. LittleFoole had to overcome is that you absolutely HAVE to listen to elvis - it ain't "easy listening music," and I'm glad about that !!!

So you think that you have seen her
When you're lying in between her

is funny but still a little wince-inducing
