I join you by saying that until I saw the printed lyric I always thought a line in Bedlam
Wailing echoes down the corridors
was
Throw your knickers down the corridor[/quote]
I have to say that for a long period of time I had a hell of a time understanding much of what Elvis was singing in his "older" songs. This probably has something to do with my American ears having trouble deciphering Anglo-speak....or maybe E was drunk and slurry on more than "High Fidelity" and it's not my fault at all! Over the years, my ears are much better trained to understand him.....and having easy access to the lyrics doesn't hurt either.
Elvis's worst pun

"You were sharp and ideal as a bobby pin"
A cold line from a cold album. And also something else: http://www.astheygo.com/ecessay25.html
A great essay.

Preacher was a talkin' there's a sermon he gave,
He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved,
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it's you who must keep it satisfied

I dunno...... I have nothing to add to this thread, but....I MUST say, that EC's "wordplay" is what made me fall in love with his songwriting. Clever, sharp-witted, sometimes stinging, sometimes corny - wh cares ??? It was (and is) a breath of fresh air in terms of the music world in general. I absolutely cringe when I hear a song by (insert anyone's name here) that sounds like it was written in the 5 minutes they spent on the crapper (and the song is worth just that). I think that's one of the issues the lovely Mrs. LittleFoole had to overcome is that you absolutely HAVE to listen to elvis - it ain't "easy listening music," and I'm glad about that !!!
