What's on the decks of Britain's drivers?
SALLY LEADBETTER Mother of two, London
The school run takes half an hour and the girls and I like singalong stuff. At the moment we've got the Magic Numbers in the car. My husband makes us school-run playlists on the iPod, but he's obsessed with Elvis Costello. Every time one of his songs come on the girls say, "Why is this man so sad?" Top three school-run anthems:
Hey Hey We're The Monkees - The Monkees
High On A Mountain Top - Loretta Lynn
Yellow Submarine - The Beatles

This is interesting.....
I recently let (made) a co-worker of mine, (a 29 year old female) listen to Imperial Bedroom. She's into Top 40 and hiphop and such, so I didn't expect her to like it. She kept saying "he sounds sooooo sad"....."why is he so sad?". And now every time I bring Elvis up she says the same thing. My reply is always....."but he makes ME so happy."
Get Happy!!
Elvis Is King!!
Unc
ps...the one song she said she liked on IB was Shabby Doll.

IB is my favorite EC album. It does have an ethereal quality to it;the way the instrumentation is mixed and so forth but I always thought Elvis's vocals on it,while sad in some instances, sounded more surreal than anything else.
I'm one who believes his singing on that album is extraordinary, and the songs in general have a dreamy quality to them.
Ive played it many times to my wife who says he sounds sad on it was well.
I dont know....different strokes for different folks I guess,as long as they dont start talking s*it about the album,so be it.

Imperial Bedroom is a sad/great album because:
A: Elvis's life was falling apart (cheating on his wife, unsuccesful albums)
B: Geoff Emerik is a god
C: It has Almost Blue, just about the most depressing thing you'll ever hear.
On the other hand, I like to sing along to Yellow Submarine too (But not the monkees) .
P.S Uncomplicated: Try feeding her sum MLAR is she thinks that IB is depressive. Shabby doll is a great song too.

Preacher was a talkin' there's a sermon he gave,
He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved,
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it's you who must keep it satisfied

errr...I don't think "He's Sad" is a hip lingo on the streets. It's probably referring to a male being sad, like in the line : "He is Sad".verbal gymnastics wrote:I wonder what context Sally Leadbetter's daughters meant the phrase "Why is this man so sad?". Did it mean that Elvis sounds sad in his singing or did it mean "He's sad" as in the hip lingo of the street?
Elvis is not for everyone.

Wow, I look like the village idiot. Well, I guess I gotta polish my british. Will kane wrote:'Sad' is UK slang for pointless, pathetic and useless.
Anywho, the british children appear to be morons in that case, calling Elvis pathetic and useless, but the american children either don't know him or replace "Sad" with "Brittish old fart".

Secondly I'm still wondering what context the statement was made.

Try here thomasso

Sad
Adj. 1. Unfortunate, pitiful or pathetic. E.g."Geoff's so sad, getting his tongue pierced just because it's fashionable."
2. Objectionable.
Never let it be said that the Board doesn't educate

Re: ...
I like Britan, sure as hell do...but it should be a crime calling EC pathetic. Therefore, after reading the first post, I now know that british children beleive EC is pathetic...at least these children do. I know the americans are even less respectful of EC, which breaks my heart really.verbal gymnastics wrote:

Canada is part of the Commonwealth but I know many in Toronto who wish they were a more independant country. My respect for Britain remains a mystery to you, Vg i don't know how you would assume that.
That would be nice, It's hard to keep up french and spanish y'know!BlueChair wrote:I think I know what I'm going to get thomasso for christmas.

Depressing ? Well, it's only a song, and it ain't "happy,", but....I could name a tune orr two that are moreso...but I digress. It may seem "sad", but it's a brilliant tune, painful in it's simple delivery. I absolutely love it...of course, I'm pretty depressing, at timesthomasso wrote: It has Almost Blue, just about the most depressing thing you'll ever hear.
