Elvis' cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”

'House' OK without 'Idol' support -- creator says

Thu Jul 28, 2005 11:13 PM ET

By Paul J. Gough

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The creator of Fox's hit medical drama "House" is not worried that his show won't be paired with ratings juggernaut "American Idol" next season.

"House" -- which stars Hugh Laurie as a grumpy doctor disdainful of his patients -- debuted quietly earlier in the year. It wasn't until Fox put the show after "American Idol" on Tuesday nights that it caught fire.

"'American Idol' was obviously very good to us. The numbers certainly changed," David Shore said Thursday during Fox Broadcasting Co.'s presentation to the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour at the Beverly Hilton.

Shore noted that the reruns have done better than the show did originally, and he said he was happy that Fox showed the confidence in the show.

"They view us as being grown up and able to fly on our own," Shore said of Fox's plans to put it on at 9 p.m. Tuesday in the fall behind the new police drama "Bones." "American Idol" doesn't return until midseason.

Sela Ward, who appeared in the final two episodes of the first season as House's ex-wife, will return for seven episodes of the new season. Other celebrities involved in the first episodes of the new season include rapper-turned-actor LL Cool J and British rocker Elvis Costello -- the latter appearing via song and not in person.

One actress who probably won't be on "House" is Laurie's former "Stuart Little" co-star, Geena Davis. She stars in her own show, "Commander In Chief," on ABC during the same time period.

"I can only say I'll be watching her devotedly Tuesdays at 9," Laurie joked when asked about her.

From zap2it.com:

Elvis Enters the 'House'

"House" has been a good showcase for guest stars in its brief life, with
its first season drawing strong performances from the likes of Harry
Lennix, Chi McBride, Leslie Hope and Joe Morton. There will be more this
year -- LL Cool J appears in the season premiere -- and at least one of
them won't even be on screen.

Elvis Costello will be on the second episode's soundtrack, singing a cover
of -- of all things -- Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful." Executive producer
David Shore says the alt-rock stalwart recorded the song specifically for
the show.

The episode is about a young girl who gets sick, Shore says. "At the
beginning of the episode, she's listening to [Aguilera's version of] this
song. And at the end of the episode, House [Hugh Laurie] is listening to
[Costello's cover]. So we get a really, I think, a lovely bookending."

Shore didn't say whether Costello's "Beautiful" would be released
commercially, but it has been cleared for the show's DVD.

Beautiful - Christina Aguilera

Don't look at me
Every day is so wonderful
And suddenly, it's hard to breathe
Now and then, I get insecure
From all the PAIN, I'm so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down oh no
So don't you bring me down today

To all your friends, you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The piece is gone left the puzzle undone
Is that the way it is

You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down oh no
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down oh no
So don't you bring me down today...

No matter what we do
(no matter what we do)
No matter what we say
(no matter what we say)
We're the song inside the tune
(yeah, oh yeah...)
Full of beautiful mistakes
And everywhere we go
( and everywhere we go)
The sun will always shine
(sun will always, always shine)
But tomorrow we might awake
On the other side

We are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won't bring us down oh no
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring us down oh no
So don't bring me down today...

Don't you bring me down...today...
Don't you bring me down...mmmmm...today...

I think "Beautiful" is an incredible song - I first heard it sung by Yuko at karaoke (Yuko of the signed back) and it turns up regularly on playlists on my iPod, or on mixes I make for people. To have Elvis record it is, well, spooky. As I've always said, I'm a big big fan of Elvis when he sings other peoples songs, so I hope this is up to his usual standard.

For those who can, don't forget to watch next week; but 'Beatiful' is a existing song, so ...???

See:
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2005/0 ... on__2.html

And finally, "House'' returns for its second season tonight (9 p.m., Fox.) The opener is a good one with LL Cool J as a deathrow inmate who has the mysterious illness of the week and Sela Ward joining the regular cast (at least temporarily) as Dr. Gregory House's (Hugh Laurie) one-time lover, Stacy Warner. The real grabber, though, comes next week with a touching episode with a wonderful performance by Sasha Pieterse ("Wanted'') as a young cancer victim and a moving song by Elvis Costello that was written specifically for the show. For more background on "House'' -- and some words of wisdom from Laurie -- check out my story from Monday.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

I read the song above. If the writer is not E.C. then there has been cross pollination, IMO.

(Cannot watch that show, am stuck with French channels at the moment. )

Elvis comments in Esquire,

Person Least Likely to Cut a Christina Aguilera Song. (Actually, I have..)

seem to indicate it's a cover of the Aguilera song.

I have no use for Christina Aguilera, but I've got to give her credit for that song. Both the lyrics and her performance.

Well, don't give her too much credit, cause it was Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes who wrote the song in the first place.

So, I just watched the show.....touching indeed, and there I was thinking they weren't gonna run the song.....but at the very end, while House is listening to his iPod, the song came on. I must say that I really liked the arrangement, and the song went along great with the episode too. Couldn't have picked a better song or a better singer in my opinion. Although, I am a little biased on that part. Can't wait to get the cd.

Loved his voice, the arrangement not so much. am I too picky? would've been better IMO!!!! just over a piano, like Xtina's. but it was a cool little bookend - her version at the start, his at the end. interesting show as well - I live in a cave and had only watched once, which was last week, because I thought the song would be on then.

what album will it be on?
Like me, the "g" is silent.

Sorry, meant to say dvd, i think it will be on the season dvd when it comes out.....but the music that they play on the show is usually really good....it would be a great idea to release the show soundtrack.

Nice performance. Btw, I had to rename the track to just 'Beautiful' to make it playable through RealPlayer.

The sentiment behind the song is wonderful, and I like the song, but Christina Aguilera annoyed the fresh hell out of me. I was amazed when I heard EC at the end of House--I mean, there isn't an EC song that I haven't heard, and I didn't recognize that one at all. Then, the chorus....and I was floored. The Man turned that song into his own!

I didn't watch the episode, so I didn't have any emotions invested the song and its usage, but I just listened to that download and was pretty unimpressed. I didn't hear *any* emotion in Elvis' voice. It sounded like they basically said "Ok EC, we'll give you $500 if you sing this song"

Eventhough I don't live in a cave, I watched the episode (wow, btw, a bit intense!) and I was not impressed at all by EC's version of the song. I thought he sounded silly singing it. I don't really care for Christina, but I do like her version of the song. It's a great song, just not EC's cup of tea, IMO.

I agree with Blue. This song sounds right off of Cruel Smile doesn't it?

BUT, I ate it up, like I do every new little Elvis thing, and I loved it.

WHY ARE HIS SONGS ALWAYS IN HEADPHONES??? It sucks, because the character invariably pulls the headphones off his ear, making the song go REALLY QUIET!
Loving this board since before When I Was Cruel.
