THE LOFTUS ROADRUNNERS - Queens Park Rangers / Drive Me Down To QPR (Gama 1977)

UK pressing of this amazing football-glam two sider by The Loftus Road Runners. Both songs were produced by Max Hole and Wayne Bardell and written by Bruce Thomas, who also joined Elvis Costello and The Attractions.

With the help of my friend Tim "Purr" and his great compilation, "On The Glitter Ball", other singles like this will be soon on Proudfoot Sound Blog.

On August 23, Sepheryn, by Curtiss Maldoon, will be available. Singer /songwriter/ guitarists Dave Curtiss and Clive Maldoon came to prominence in their native England with guitarist Steve Howe (who would go on to fame in Yes). Their band Bodast quickly splintered into a duo that made two rare early ‘70s masterpieces. Sepheryn contains the entire debut, portions of its follow-up, a very rare single and some never-before-released tracks. Stylistically varied, it ranges from cool pop to balladry to heavier material, and includes the title track which Madonna later reworked into “Ray Of Light.” Steve Howe, organist Tony Ashton, and bassist Bruce Thomas (who would later join Elvis Costello) are also heard on this album. [MSRP $13.98]

I am sure Bruce supports Manchester United. Maybe he became a 'glory hunter' as the years went by.

Bruce Thomas is listed as #2 in The 10 Grooviest Bass Guitarists:

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1975 album. Moonrider was put together in 1974 by Keith 'Teenage Opera' West and John Weider (then ex- Family and Eric Burdon's Animals). West and Weider wrote all the material and drafted in more players for a fuller sound and live performing. Joined by old acquaintance Bruce Thomas (later to join Elvis Costello in his Attractions) and Chico Greenwood. As a bonus, we include the two singles Keith West recorded and released as a solo artist through Deram in 1973 and 1974. RPM.

Bizarre to list Keef in that top 10! The title is also misleading, should say 'White Rock Bass Guitarists', but then again it is a retro rock site.

John O posts to Facebook-

Got an email from Bruce Thomas yesterday and he's got a new website with blogs, pics, info, etc. Of particular interest is the electronic music project he did with his nephew Mark East http://www.brucethomas.co.uk/?page_id=77, and the collection of favourite bass performances by himself and others called "Now That's What I Call Bass": http://www.brucethomas.co.uk/?p=415

Some additional notes on The Big Wheel

Once upon a time there was a band that had a great adventure … which included a few scrapes from which none of them — neither Drummer, Singer, Keyboard Player, nor Bass Player — should have ever emerged with any dignity or self-righteousness intact. It was a jolly old time — a time when the Singer was happy being in a band … before the subtle shift to having a band.

But being paid to go round the world in a band was never quite as grim as I made it out to be. I should’ve also mentioned watching the sunrise over Sumatra from the flight deck of a 747, or seeing the sun set over Mt. Fuji. Or seeing some of the world’s best art … Jackson Pollock, van Gogh, Cézanne … the Sistine Chapel in Rome … Gaudi’s triumphs in Barcelona … Paris at night from the top of the Eiffel Tower … New York from the top of the World Trade Center … or going out on to the roof of Sydney Opera House … seeing Niagara Falls frozen over … or swimming out to an island in a Norwegian fjord, only to discover a hundred naked women had got there first. It’s too easy to become blasé when experiences like those happen every other day … in between the strip malls of Spokane and the waffle houses of Wigan. And, of course, some nights I found myself playing in a very good band.

Enjoyed him demonstrating his salmon pink customised Profile bass here. Nice segue into the fab 'Chelsea' bassline after a minute on the second clip, and with some 'Lipstick Vogue' to follow.

Definitely a better bass player than writer!

When I posted the clips for my new Profile Signature Model Bass on YouTube, I found quite a few bass players who’ve taken the time to cover some of my parts … because they like them. Here’s a selection of some of the best … Nice playing, one and all …

Accidents Will Happen – Troy Hughes

.............he gets all the notes right — even my noodling and doodling on the outro. The guys behind him look like a fairly typical Attractions’ audience, too.

An ungracious 'joke' from Bruce Thomas. It's a pity his personality doesn't match his superb bass playing.

Same here – I didn't take it personally (mostly because I never saw the Attractions) but I thought it was funny.

If he'd said "A typical audience from an Imposters gig", well, that'd definitely be ungracious and mean-spirited.

I sorta resemble the one on the right side, third row down, fifth from the right.

How about everyone else?

I think those are masks or something... they're definitely not posters.

(Although no-one seems to have picked up on the fact that the repeated melodic figure at the end of this track
[5ive Gears] is actually a bass overdub, and not a guitar part.)

Hey Bruce...I picked up on that the first time I heard it. It's brilliant! I can't play bass though.
