Rank Ten Bloody Liberties

Post by King Hoarse »

Due to popular opinion (well, wardo seems popular) I'm jumping back a little chronologically so we can wait for the new reissue to rank KoA.

I've never owned Ten Bloody Marys & Ten How's Your Fathers or Taking Liberties because I had the tracks on singles and CD reissues, but going back to listen to them in a row now I can see how impressive these records were on their first releases. Maybe they don't flow as well as the original 'proper' LP's, but song for song they're pretty much on a par.

I'm sure not that many will give this a shot, but those who do probably know all the songs on both comps anyway, so I'm not favoring one. Here goes:

1. Hoover Factory
2. Radio Sweetheart (I wish the Imposters would play this, maybe even with Jackie Wilson Said)
3. Big Tears
4. Watching The Detectives
5. Just A Memory
6. Getting Mighty Crowded
7. Black & White World (better than the Get Happy!! version methinks)
8. Night Rally
9. Peace, Love & Understanding (he should sing more songs in an inebriated low register; this sounds great)
10. Chelsea
11. Radio Radio (excellent, but I prefer faster live versions)
12. Tiny Steps
13. My Funny Valentine
14. Ghost Train
15. Wednesday Week
16. Clowntime Is Over no. 2
17. Clean Money
18. Girls Talk
19. Talking In The Dark
20. Crawling To The USA
21. Stranger In The House
22. Dr Luther's Assistant
23. Sunday's Best (annoying vocal)

Looking back at this one, I think it's highly underrated. Songs 1-12 are interchangeable for me, as are 13-19. I think the only clunker is "Night Rally".

1 Hoover Factory
2 Just A Memory
3 Ghost Train
4 Crawling To the USA
5 Tiny Steps
6 My Funny Valentine
7 Wednesday Week
8 Radio Sweetheart
9 Chelsea
10 Black & White World (I much prefer this version)
11 Girls Talk
12 Sunday's Best
13 Dr. Luther's Assistant
14 Getting Mighty Crowded
15 Big Tears
16 Clowntime Is Over 2 (I like this one better too)
17 Clean Money
18 Stranger In the House
19 Talking In the Dark
20 Night Rally

(current music: Charlie Don't Surf - The Clash)
