Elvis Times Three!

Post by Uncomplicated »

One of my greatest pleasures in life is playing Elvis Costello records for people who have never heard him, or much of him. Back in the days of vinyl we would just set the needle down and let it play. So here, for this lets say that your CD player programmer is broken and you have a chance to play three consecutive Elvis songs from any album. (best of's don't count). For instance....accidents will happen, senior service, olivers army from Armed Forces, or boy with a problem, pidgin english, you little fool from IB.....you get the idea. Three in a row you would want someone to hear or just your favourite 3.

This is mine.

King Horse, Possession, Men Called Uncle from Get Happy!!

Kind of silly I know....I'm not much of a thread starter, but I'm bored! :D

No fair, Poppet. You always spaz out on these lists. Now pull yourself together and come up with three songs!

I'm going for three songs that I would play for someone to get them familiar with EC. Here's mine in no particular order. Sorry for those of you who haven't heard the new songs, but I just love them all and had to include one on my list. Can't wait for the album this fall!

I like your Get Happy three in a row, Uncomplicated. I would move your needle on one on Imperial Bedroom and go for Pidgen English, You Little Fool and Town Cryer. The first 3 from Spike sound pretty good (This Town, Let Him Dangle and DDTM) but I think my favourite would be the last three from King Of America (Jack Of All Parades, Suit Of Lights and Sleep Of The Just).
It was as much of the alphabet as I knew how to use.

Uncomplicated, I think your 3 are my favorite 3 consecutive songs ever.

Since you already mentioned it, however, here's my pick, and my favorite opening tracks on any album I have:

Clubland, Lovers Walk and You'll Never Be A Man.

I would definitly play - blue chair, battered old bird, crimes of paris from "Blood and Chocolate"

Or I would definitly play - the other side of summer, hurry down doomsday, how to be dumb from "Mighty Like a Rose".

I guess it depends on which one skips less.

When I was writing down my possible 3's I came up with several mentioned here. Oily's 3 from ATUB, and John's 3 from IB 'cause of the inclusion of You Little Fool one of my all time favs...also Goody's for You'll Never Be A Man also in my EC top 5. WHAR's First three from MLAR is awesome as well. I always thought that was a very Rockin' start to an album.

Unc, I thought of doing this thread a while back and had your three GH tracks!

I can't beat that but this wouldn't be bad.

Mood Swung and Girl Out Of Time... I'm not so sure you guys really understood the directions. They have to be in order from a certain album.

I can think of a few.

Uncomplicated
I Hope You're Happy Now
Tokyo Storm Warning

Indoor Fireworks
Little Palaces
I'll Wear It Proudly

And In Every Home
The Loved Ones
Human Hands

Deep Dark Truthful Mirror
Veronica
God's Comic

Rocking Horse Road
Just About Glad
All The Rage

And, if you could somehow suck the 80s sound out of GCW, Worthless Thing, Love Field and I Wanna Be Loved would be great.

Goodbye Cruel World has some good sets of three. I despise "I Wanna Be Loved".

Home Truth
Room With No Number
Inch By Inch

I always felt that "I Wanna Be Loved" is the only GCW song that has that overboard 80s production. It sort of suits the other songs, or goes unnoticed.

Jackson and SL. I'ts very cool that we think alike. Isn't Get Happy so wonderful? And those three songs are so darn good! Especially "Possession" and "Men Called Uncle"....which I thought was titled "MAN Called Uncle" for about 25 years because of the misprint on the original album (a thread topic in it's self). Those two songs I've always kind of condidered one song...the way they run together.....and on almost any Elvis mix tape that I have ever made, those two songs appear back to back. They give me chills.....as do many of EC's songs. but I often start here when trying to "turn on" someone to Elvis.

okay, spooky g brow-beat me into it. yay peer pressure!

from the second cd of Punch The Clock:

The World and His Wife
Shatterproof
Heathen Town

gotta say, i MUCH prefer this version TWaHW. and i LOVE shatterproof.

i just played it to make sure it works for me. it does. i like the contrast of stripped down acoustic/tinkly classicalesque/stripped down acoustic again.

Yeah, Poppet. Except I was too damn stupid to realize that I broke the rules. I picked three songs from different albums. :?

Let me try again:

from KOA:
Brilliant Mistake
I'll Wear It Proudly
Suit of Lights

from TJL:
Taking My Life in Your Hands
Jacksons Monk and Rowe
The Birds Will Still be Singing

from PFM:
I Still Have That Other Girl
This House Is Empty Now
God Give Me Strength
