Some nice things I don't have in there, e.g. never heard So You Wanna Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star, nor Aubergine.

Having erased all 14,600 songs off my iPod recently with no back-up, I've been busy reloading and have now reached the letter D. What struck me with all the Costello bonus CDs was the number of songs I could recall nothing or almost nothing about as I ripped. I'm sure they'll be familiar on re-listening, but there are a lot I haven't played since first getting them. Time for a revisit, I think!

The Juliet Letters may be EC's most performed album.

Here we see a performance of "The Letter Home" from May 2012 by a string quartet formed from alumni of l'Escola Municipal-Conservatori de Música Josep M. Ruera, de Granollers in Barcelona, Spain.

The vocalist is Paula Barranco.

Meanwhile in Santiago, Chile, there were two complete performances of The Juliet Letters by Felipe Cadenasso and the Cuarteto Filarmónico which seems to be drawn from members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Chile.

You can see them here:

Sylvie Yannello is a Piano teacher in Long Island City which I presume is somewhere near New York and Manhattan. She also seems to be a fan of Elvis.

http://sylvieyannello.com/lessons/bio.php

Here are a collection of links to YouTube clips showing her performing EC songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g28VvfuvKfk Ascension Day (4 mins:14secs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYBf_Iy2aLc Little Triggers (2:39)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbRZBrCsqb0 Shot With His Own Gun (3:38)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9NVWmSoU6A Sneaky Feelings (2:05)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XGW8oSI6I4 Two Little Hitlers (3:27)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuTZjciS2v0 Watch Your Step (3:06)

FWIW, my favourite here is Two Little Hitlers, although when you hear Sylvie play it, you appreciate Steve even more. Strictly speaking Ascension Day is a Toussaint/Bird composition, to which EC contributed lyrics (which Sylvie does not sing) but I have included it here for completeness.

Enjoy.

COSTELLO HAS UNATTRACTIVE SIDE

Never mind that Elvis Costello was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a band named the Attractions. At the premiere of “Comes a Bright Day,” Costello tells us he’ll never perform with his old pal Huey Lewis on account of Lewis’ good looks. “He’s kind of a bit handsome,” cracked Costello. “I don’t let handsome people up on the stage.” Lucky for Costello, the list of musicians less attractive than himself includes, “just about everybody.”

Sir Paul there too:

The famous Beatle flew to Manhattan with his wife Nancy Shevell to attend the American premiere of Simon Aboud’s directorial debut. Aboud was also in attendance with his lovely wife Mary, who is McCartney’s daughter. Sir McCartney jovially stated when asked why are you here tonight to celebrate the film, “Because he is my son-in-law,” in reference to the director. With the family affair in full swing guests and friends were just as pleased to be invited to the screening. Music legend Elvis Costello especially expressed his gratitude to be at the event. “I heard it is a very good film and I am excited to see it,” stated the musician about the romantic thriller set in London. “English films are great and there are some wonderful actors in it.”

Graham Parker
Return of an Underappreciated Rocker

(extract)

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... ham+parker

You get tired of Elvis Costello comparisons.

In every interview or review I have to see his name and Joe Jackson's, as if we hung out at the pub and it all happened at the same time. [Mr. Costello] is one of the best songwriters ever. But what I always think is that seeing as I pre-dated these guys a little, with all due respect, does my name ever appear in their interviews? People forget that for a year and a half, Graham Parker and the Rumour were top dog in this kind of music.

I met Elvis back in the day before he had a deal, he came to our gigs. He had a band called Flip City, I went to see them, thought it was pretty weak. It wasn't til Stiff [Records, started by Mr. Parker's first manager after Mr. Parker's first recordings were released] that all of a sudden he goes balls to the wall, a whole different thing. He basically reinvented himself with this extraordinary album, produced by Nick [Lowe, who had also produced "Howling Wind"], and now Nick's career is off and running again. It's that time of my life when you do analyze history a bit, you can't help it.

Interesting assignment !

http://journalism12-13.blogspot.ie/2012 ... elvis.html

Thursday, Nov 29 Malcolm X and Elvis Costello

In class today and tomorrow you are reading two interviews, one with Malcolm X, the other with Elvis Costello, an English singer song writer, who is routinely listed in the 100 greatest artists of all times, or so say a couple articles I checked out.

Lester Bangs
would have been 64 today. Here's Elvis reading him in a photo from the Spike programme.

Lester didn't dig Elvis - on listening to Armed Forces “…sounded like some limey gettin’ an F in Bruce Springsteen class and throwing a wildly inflated snit about it…

That's fun, but not sure I agree with all of them, especially The World and His Wife which for me is more warm and humorous than snarky. What I must say is it had never struck me that 'alphabet' in King of America is pronounced 'alfrabet', but it's clearly the case. Never heard this pronunciation, is it a familiar error in the US? Very odd comment about this song/album that Attractions-less Elvis adopts a 'very traditional English folk/pub rock sound' - the band couldn't be American and the sound is undeniably west not east of the Atlantic, as befits the title.

What with Elvis' involvement with previous Muiscares Person Of The Year shows , it would seem likely he would be participant in one for Bruce Springsteen. The fact that he will be in Australia two days before this show makes it unlikely that he will be one of the additional performers to be announced. However , what with time difference etc, it is logistically possible so you never know.

Never understood the "alphrabet" pronunciation in Brilliant Mistake. Is it deliberate, a brilliant mistake or does Evis struggle with the word?
