[quote="johnfoyleScarlet Tide was played over the closing credits of Cold Mountain. In fact it was the even only played over the later part of the credits, after another song. After it got a Oscar nomination Elvis remarked in a interview how he had the experience, like the rest of us, of waiting a in rapidly emptying movie house ( in Vancouver with is father-in-law, if I remember right) to hear the usage. Its Oscar nomination was , undoubtably, a by-product of the usual big studio manipulation of that system.

[/quote]

Right, that's exactly what I was getting at, although I may have worded it sloppily so that it looked like I was saying Scarlet Tide had a big impact. It didn't. I remember that interview with Elvis about the song playing to departing theatergoers. She, on the other hand, played during the film and packed a big wallop because of it. It's a shame this song won't be played during the film.

A little review of the song and another link to the Doc's Youtube clip. With a bit of luck we'll get a longer version played on Radio 2 this week. If the song does go quiet and then pick up again I can't see it not being talked over though.

Still no promotion of this record. Maybe they are waiting until after the film is released?

Radio 2 have listed the record again on their C list for next week. That is meant to mean about 5 plays a week. So far this week it has not been played at all! I have emailed the station to give to give them a nudge.

Besides that one play on Zoe Ball's programme the other Saturday has anyone heard the record played anywhere in the world?

Great minds think alike (or too much time on our hands) I have just checked and that must be unusual for a C list record not to get any plays at all.

If it wasnt be the stirling work by people on here I wouldn't even know this song existed, although the film has had much publicity either from what I have seen.

Just found this link sampling all the tracks on the soundtrack:

Sounds like Doll Revolution is the same old version we've heard plenty of times before.

It is - CD of the OST arrived this morning.
I'd forgotten what a good song it is, though.
Sparkling Day is nice & listenable, if not outstanding. Might soothe the troubled masses.

Is the soundtrack album available only as a download in the US? The only CD version I can find on Amazon is the UK import.

Downloaded this from Amazon just after midnight last night. I only had one listen but there is another verse in there somewhere, not a repeat. There must be a radio edit of the single. Will have a proper listen tonight.

Yep, I just downloaded it - there's an extra verse in the middle.

Nice to have another power pop number from Elvis after so many years - it's not my favourite thing he's ever done, but it's pretty damn good.

HMV Dublin tell me they are , at present, only getting in copies of the CD edition if the customer orders it since it has a selling price of €21.00. Doubtlessly it'll come down in price if the film is a hit etc. Right now I'll make do with a download , which Martin is going to organise for me since. Will he pay for it? I'm not asking - he's not telling!

Mrs John has just called me to say that the dulcet tones of one Mr. Costello have just been heard on national radio. The (big Elvis fan) Jeremy Vine's show was the place. Unfortunately Jeremy is off and Vanessa Feltz is covering.

Should be on listen again shortly.

It turns out there will be a US CD release, just not until September 6.

Soundtrack for ONE DAY features new song from Elvis Costello

On August 16th, 2011*, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) releases digitally the motion picture soundtrack for the new movie One Day, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. The soundtrack One Day features a brand new track written and composed exclusively for the movie by Elvis Costello; titled “Sparkling Day,” the song is only available on this soundtrack. Also included is a stellar roster of songs by a diverse group of artists from the last two decades; plus selections from the original film score by Academy Award winner Rachel Portman (Emma, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat).

Twenty years. Two people…To be released by Focus Features in theaters nationwide on Friday, August 19th, 2011, One Day stars Academy Award nominee Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe). Directed by Lone Scherfig (director of An Education, Academy Award-nominated for Best Picture), the motion picture One Day is adapted for the screen by David Nicholls from his beloved bestselling novel “One Day.” After one day together – July 15th, 1988, their college graduation – Emma Morley (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess) begin a friendship that will last a lifetime. She is a working-class girl of principle and ambition who dreams of making the world a better place. He is a wealthy charmer who dreams that the world will be his playground. For the next two decades, key moments of their relationship are experienced over several July 15ths in their lives. Together and apart, we see Dex and Em through their friendship and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. Somewhere along their journey, these two people realize that what they are searching and hoping for has been there for them all along. As the true meaning of that one day back in 1988 is revealed, they come to terms with the nature of love and life itself.

The music featured on the soundtrack One Day bookmarks moments in Dexter and Emma’s lives, mapping out a musical timeline that ties in to the complexity of their ever-evolving relationship.

Paid the exorbitant €1.29 for an iTunes download. Pretty little tune, nice to hear a 'pop' tune from Elvis again, time will tell if it's a hit in any way. David Hepworths comment in the current Word that the film is very much of the Bridget Jones school of film making is ominous.

Listening to the full version from the iTunes download reveals all kinds of sounds that really make this a great pop track. Things like that that swooping bass/piano sound each time 'lost' is sung in the chorus. And that skuzzy guitar sound half way though each chorus etc.

The extra verse, featuring second in the song, is highlighted here - any corrections are welcome !

Oh, it was such a sparkling day
That I should be singing its praises
Just to catch my senses as they slip away
But my sentences and phrases
Are about as worthless as wonder can be
And there are words that I could say
Perhaps I lack the sense of occasion
Seems that I've been looking down so long you see
That it seemed like up to me
I should be ashamed I'm sure you will agree

Chorus

So don't go calling out for Jude or Anthony
Maybe I was lost
I'm a hopeless case
So that every night I listen carefully
But there was no message from me
No message from me
Sparkling day, sparkling day
Things I never said
Some things you never heard
Sparkling day, sparkling day
Now I wait in vain to see
That there was no message from me

I hung beneath the evening stars
Long enough to hear my lover whisper
Though the night kept offering a deeper hue
One of every blue persuasion
What in heavens was I to do

Chorus

So don't go calling out for Jude or Anthony
Maybe I was lost
I'm a hopeless case
So that every night I listen carefully
But there was no message from me
No message from me
Sparkling day, sparkling day
Things I never said
Some things you never heard
Sparkling day, sparkling day
Now I wait in vain to see
That there was no message from me

When love is constant and content
You always fear some lingering temptation
Silhouettes escaping underneath locked doors
I'm astonished and amazed
Perhaps my message was erased.

Chorus

So don't go calling out for Jude or Anthony
Maybe I was lost
I'm a hopeless case
But then every night I listen carefully
But there was no message from me
No message from me
Sparkling day, sparkling day
Things I never said
Some things you never heard
Sparkling day, sparkling day
Now I wait in vain to see
That there was no message from me

Think it may be "heaven" rather than "heavens"!?

Is it definitely "stars"?

Hmmm......maybe indeed be 'heaven' but it has to be 'stars' - not even Elvis would try and sell us the conceit that a character would be regarding just one star! I think I know which part of the 'One Day' story is being referred too but , yet again, can't be certain until it's seen what elements of the book were used in the film.

What can be heard on the album is, by the way, not merely a longer version of the song that we've been listening too via the youTube/BBC radio broadcast. Besides the additional verse appearing at c.1.44 there is a longer fade out. Completist will then, therefore , have to get a copy of that promo item , if it doesn't get released as a proper single.
