Ray LaMontagne covering Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy". I like this a lot...

This found its way onto my desk so I thought I'd give it a go. I only later realized that Adam Green was one of the primaries in The Moldy Peaches. Anyhow, the record is a lot of fun... Green's voice is a lot like Richard Hawley's but the songs are a lot sillier and off-the-wall.

Riff Raff The Singles 1977-80.

This is Billy Bragg's punk band before he went solo. I prefer him solo but the music captures the era.

The new Bob, after spending the last few days with Ray LaMontagne's new disc. "Ain't Talkin'" is my early fave off of Modern Times.

Guardian reckoned it was his best yet. Tempted to make a 'blind' purchase, given that I don't really know any of his stuff apart from one or two songs on sampler CDs.

I think he's the finest young songwriter working today, meriting all of the attention that Conor Oberst is undeservedly getting. I know's he's mates with Oberst, but Ward has a style all his own, while I find Oberst fairly derivative. You've got to get used to his voice, which has a kind of scratchy, croaky quality to it, but once you do you're hooked and you'll want his other stuff. Pole's a big fan too I know. Can't recommend this highly enough.

Yep, his 2003 album, Transfiguration of Vincent, was amazingly good, and the few songs I heard from the new one certainly prove M.Ward is one of the best songwriters around.

In the meantime, I'm listening to I Am Not Willing, an excellent new song from Lloyd Cole's upcoming album (out in two weeks!).
