On Stage: Allen Toussaint
Posted: Feb. 15, 2007
8 p.m. Saturday, Pabst Theater, 144 E. Wells St. $29.50 at the box office, (414) 286-3663, and through Ticketmaster, (414) 276-4545 and http://www.ticketmaster.com.
The degree to which a city or region is embodied by its citizens, rather than by its architecture, will be exemplified by Allen Toussaint when he performs Saturday.
Although hardly unknown, Toussaint has long been a behind-the-scenes legend in his native New Orleans known for his work as a producer (awesome 1970s funk ensemble The Meters, soul singer Irma Thomas, disco hitmaker LaBelle) and a songwriter ("Working in a Coalmine," "Whipped Cream," "What Is Success").
But when Hurricane Katrina flooded his house in 2005, Toussaint moved to New York City, and Elvis Costello suggested what became last year's album "The River in Reverse," a fantastic collaboration that delved into Toussaint's songbook but also called upon his talents as an arranger and pianist.
After touring with Costello (and before doing so again later this year), Toussaint more recently has been out on his own with a small ensemble.
He's been writing recently, too, so this gig ought to highlight some of the latest stuff from a man whose quality work spans six decades.
Folk singer/songwriter Pieta Brown opens the evening.
