Your Ten Favourite... Dylan songs

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Your Ten Favourite... Dylan songs

Post by BlueChair »

Another one that we haven't done yet and is insanely difficult to narrow it down, but here goes nothing:

1. I Want You
2. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
3. Just Like A Woman
4. Tangled Up In Blue
5. Idiot Wind
6. You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go
7. Love Minus Zero/No Limit
8. Desolation Row
9. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
10. Queen Jane Approximately
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

If You See Her Say Hello
Hard Rain (or whatever the full title is)
Tangled Up In Blue
Isis
Positively 4th Street
I Shall Be Released
Don't Think Twice, It's Alright
Queen Jane Approximately
All Along The Watchtower
Black Diamond Bay

I know a lot of people might scoff at the last one compared to the heartbreaking omissions, but it's one of his very best story songs, and between the violin and Emmylou's dark harmonies, well, it's just a killer for me.

"Black Diamond Bay" is probably my favourite song on Desire. I think it's the only song from the album that wasn't performed on the Rolling Thunder tour, probably because it wouldn't have been nearly as effective without Emmylou's vocal.

I'm also happy to see I'm not the only one who places "Queen Jane Approximately" in such high esteem... I think it ends up being the forgotten track on Highway 61 but it's always been my favourite on that record.

I've been trying to avoid this thread, because it's impossible to narrow it down to ten, but I can't resist. Certain to change my mind as soon as I post this, etc., etc., but here goes:

Positively 4th Street
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
Visions Of Johanna
The Man In Me
Isis
Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)
Where Are You Tonight (Journey Through Dark Heat)
What Can I Do For You?
Congratulations

Original list! I'm a middle-sized Bob fan - I love most of what I know to death but don't know all of it - and don't know at least 3 of these. Fortunately this beautiful tool helps you identify the origin of anything straight off:

http://bobdylan.com/moderntimes/lyrics/main.html

But Congratulations doesn't feature. Wasn't that by Cliff Richard? where is it from? Massively obscure?

Congratulations is Wilburys tune I do believe.

Black Diamond Bay is a great song - I love the way at the end it all comes back to the guy watching the seven oclock news.

And Ive always loved this bit, and the way he sings it -

"As the island slowly sank
The loser finally broke the bank in the gambling room
The dealer said "It's too late now
You can take you money, but I don't know how
You'll spend it in the tomb"
echos myron like a siren
with endurance like the liberty bell
and he tells you of the dreamers
but he's cracked up like the road
and he'd like to lift us up, but we're a very heavy load

Oh yeah , was just listening to the Bootleg Live 66 Disc - that version of "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" has gottta be my favourite 3:46 seconds of Dylan, the way he sings it - best listened to LOUD!

Mike, I haven't heard that version-- yet!-- but what you've written makes sense. BLMFYD is the highlight of The Last Waltz in my book, and that is saying something. It's just so damn rockin' and exuberant and BIG, with over a dozen people on the stage.

I must re-listen to the Last Waltz version.

The way he sings the 66 vesion is a kinda bored cynical howl, like a dog baying at moon.

Impossible.

Quit Your Low Down Ways *
Girl From The North Country (I LOVE the sound on that track)
(I know Highway 61 is arguably his best record but AAARRRGGGHHH)
Visions Of Johanna
All Along The Watchtower
Sign On The Window *
Belle Isle *
Romance In Durango (Rolling Thunder) *
You're A Big Girl Now (Hard Rain)
Idiot Wind (Hard Rain)
If You See Her, Say Hello (Providence '76 I think, with alternative lyrics)
Brownsville Girl
What Was It You Wanted?

*: two of those would have to go. Today, Belle Isle & Sign On The Window. Yesterday it was the other way around.
What this world needs is more silly men.

Yup, you can hear the corkscrew being pushed in and then violently pulled out on that one! (paraphrasing Big Girl for you non-anoraks out there)

Tellingly, that's the last album release before the divorce. He really sings straight from his wounded heart, mostly about him & Sara, who's on the side of the stage during some numbers, and after the opening tracks it's pretty much sequenced as their rise & fall. It's more Live than any other album you're likely to hear.

1) Maggie's Farm
2) One Too Many Mornings (with extra verse)
3) Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
4) Oh Sister
5) Lay Lady Lay
6) Shelter From The Storm
7) You're A Big Girl Now
8) I Threw It All Away
9) Idiot Wind
What this world needs is more silly men.
