HOTSPOTS

Sometimes the hassle and expense of going to a show can make music fans just want to stay home. That's why Don Quixote's is such a treasure. Up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, you can see the same acts you'd see in San Francisco, with no parking headaches, plenty of seating and guacamole made fresh at your table -- usually for a couple of bucks less than in the city to the north.

THE MUSIC: Promoter Tom Miller brought his International Music Series to Don Quixote's last year after the smaller, funkier Henfling's in Ben Lomond closed. It's a much better room -- there's space to dance and the chitchat at the bar no longer drowns out the quiet numbers. The music is all over the map: Highlights for August include slack-key guitar masters George Kuo, Martin Pahinui and Aaron Mahi (Aug. 15); acoustic bluesman Louisiana Red (Aug. 16); a country band with an unprintable name featuring two Elvis Costello sidemen (Aug. 17); and even a Pink Floyd tribute band (Aug. 12).

FOOD AND DRINK: I'm no gourmet, but Don Quixote's Mexican food tastes good to me. The menu has lots of seafood offerings, including fine fish tacos, and there are quite a few vegetarian options. Muchas margaritas, too. Don Quixote's, 6275 Highway 9, Felton. For more information: (831) 603-2294 or http://www.donquixotesmusic.com.

A album by a early 1970's pub-rock group that featured Pete Thomas has been re-issued -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000 ... y&v=glance

Image
( Sleeve by Barney Bubbles)
Bongos Over Balham
~ Chilli Willi & Red Hot Peppers

http://www.freakemporium.com/site/relea ... epage.html

Finally available on CD after one hell of a long wait, the second album by these legendary jamming pub rockers, influenced equally by Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Alexis Korner and Jerry Garcia! Featuring among their lineup the legendary Phil 'Snakefinger' Lithman (later a collaborator with The Residents), rock journeyman Martin Stone ( previously of the Action, Mighty Baby, Junior's Blues Band and, who believe it or not, has been a sometime Current 93/ Bevis Frond collaborator in the 90s) later Rumour bassist Paul Riley. and future Elvis Costello & The Attractions drummer Pete Thomas, Chilli Willi were one of the many bands who faltered at the time due to the predominance of progressive rock, something their three-chord style was at odds with even though they often played on bills with those acts-and though many wax lyrical these days about the pub rock era, it must be said that the Chilli boys would probably have loved to play stadiums and theatres!!

Nevertheless, 'Bongos. . .' is an infectious feelgood fest that captures perfectly, along with Dr Feelgood's 'Stupidity' and the Tyla Gang's 'Yachtless' the cosy, boozy atmosphere of those classic years, and if one closes one's eyes and listens to 'Truck Driving Girl' or 'Desert Island Woman' they can almost forget that in the same year bands were releasing albums called 'Tales From Topographic Oceans'!! The superb original artwork (with its late 40s 'Pink Pearl Light' advert included) is reproduced here: the album is now expanded to a wapping (crap pun intended) 22 tracks, among them the B-side from their one single and ten demos and outtakes never before heard!! Liner notes are by David Wells and the whole shebang is full of photos and memorabilia. Mine's a pint of ordinary- but there's nothing ordinary about the music. Cracking!!

Pete on listserv allows me to share this -

Jack Shit rocks the house!

Drove about 30 miles into the Santa Cruz
mountains to the hamlet of Felton (which
the band apparently thought was Santa
Cruz, much as EC always seems to think
Oakland is San Francisco), to the incredibly
appropriate "Don Quixote International
Music Hall." It's about as fancy as your average
church basement, lending it just the right
mix of cheesiness and good acoustics that does
justice to this band.

I was basically the first person there and thereby
took advantage of the $8 "in advance" tickets,
which must be the best bargain in live music
since I saw.... well, I did see the Beat-that-
must-not-be-called-English last week for free,
so ixnay on that angle. The band was already
set up and fooling around with the sound.
So every time I heard "Pete!" I looked around, but
of course it was not about me. I got to chat
up Pete's apparently British wife a bit about
buying J.S. CDs and the like. Ultimately a grand
total of no more than 30 people showed, making
the gate somewhere less than $250, assuming
there was a guest list. Good thing I got there early...

Fellow lister Steve showed up a few
minutes later and together we must have
quadrupled J.S. CD sales for the decade. Apparently
the CDs are not on a proper label, so get 'em
while they're hot at
http://jackshit-theband.com/cd-list.html
Autographs were easy to come by and the
trio were a friendly lot. (Steve will be posting
Pete/Steve & the Imposters pics soon.)

The band is basically doing a rootsy bar-band
thing with lots of comedy (musical and verbal)
interspersed. I'm thinking it's along the lines
of Slo's heroes, The Beat Farmers, with Dave doing a fair lot
of that chunka-chunka Johnny Cash bass line. However,
they throw some rock and other stuff in so it never
gets monotonous.

Quasi set list, not complete or in order:

Hi How Are Ya?
Old Kentucky Home (traditional, apparently Randy
Newman's version)
Christine's Tune (Devil in Disguise)
Bull Rider
2 x 4
Long Black Veil (nice version!)
Pretty Polly
Louisiana (the Randy Newman tune, perhaps the
high mark of the show, with no joking at all btw)
Dangerous Crossing (with funny crossing charades,
Pete crossing his sticks)
Older Guys
Ugly and Slouchy (the song with the medley referred
to below??)
Price of Love (see note below)
I'm Coming Home (seemed similar to the Ten Years After
Woodstock wank-out performance of "I'm Going Home")
Big Bird (the Jam tune, which may be
an old soul hit per Steve R.)

Somewhere mixed in was a hilarious
medley of: Green Eyed Lady/Spinning Wheel/
Jesus is Just Alright/Stairway to Heaven/And
When I Die.

The most EC aspect? That was Pete and Dave
basically doing the rhythm section of
"Pump It Up" during most or all of "The Price of Love."
Very effectively, I might add.

Most Beatlesesque moment? That was when Pete starts
singing "The Long and Winding Road"
before the band breaks into something that
sounds a *lot* like "Get Back," but is actually
something else (I can't remember what).

The thing that cannot be overemphasized
is how fucking funny Dave and Val McCallum
are. Much of it appeared to be improvised,
But of course You Had to Be There. A lot of it
seemed to be at Pete's expense.
(One tidbit: Val calls Dave "Shorty
Pastorius" after a bass solo....) Additionally,
both Dave and Val can sing pretty well --
Dave being particularly adept with the cheesy
falsettos -- while Pete, er, cannot. Oh, yeah,
Val can fucking play the guitar.

Anyway, if you have the chance, don't think
twice just go see 'em.

Oh yeah, add "Ring of Fire" to the set list.
With audience participation filling in the horn
parts at Pete's direction. Fun, fun, fun!
The real tragedy was that I had
to drink Miller Lite all night due to driving
responsiblities. The humanity.

I don't know if this a recent development, but each
member of the band has a "Shit" persona:

Val is "Beau" Shit (http://jackshit-theband.com/Val.html)
Dave is "Shorty" Shit (http://jackshit-theband.com/Davey.html)
Pete is "Peace o' " Shit (http://jackshit-theband.com/Pete.html)

(Per Dave, sometimes crowds start
chanting "Piece o' Shit! Piece o' Shit!" etc.)

They hail from the mythical town of
Cochtotin' ("90 miles south of Bakersfield").
Much of the onstage shtick/banter is
based on this and their names, FWIW.

I think they could kill on Conan.

Also, FWIW, Dave looked a lot different up close
and in person: he lost a lot of hair evidently.

Pete, who so far finds the name "Patty Hurst
Shifter" to be better than their music

PS - probably duly noted elsewhere, but
JS is the backup for a recent Jackie Greene
album "American Myth" (4 stars at AMG FWIW,
and see
http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/product. ... &pid=11493 )
You'll want to check this link out if only
for the Jackie Greene ringtones, my dogs.
Green has apparently been called
"Dylanesque," FWIW.

I don't think this has been posted yet, but Jackshit serves as the backing band on the new Rogue's Gallery compilation of "pirate ballads, sea songs and chanteys." They also deliver their own performance of "Boney Was A Woman" on Disc 2.

Honestly, the collection is a bit of a disappointment in my opinion. There's probably a good compilation in here somewhere (indeed, great performances from Richard Thompson, Loudon Wainwright III, Van Dyke Parks, Teddy Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Jolie Holland and others) but there's WAY too much music on here to absorb... over 2 1/2 hours worth spanning two discs.

But I suppose my favourite part of the CD is the fact that all through the liner notes Davey is given the last name "Fallagher"
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

I think Pete looks so cute in that picture on the fence, whatever his nickname. The pictures of them with their instruments look like they were taken in Davey's mom's basement or something.

LAist Interview: Pete Thomas of Jackshit

Pete Thomas, a drummer since he was a kid in Sheffield, England, joined Elvis Costello to form the Attractions and continues as the drummer for the Imposters. He has also played as a session musician with countless artists including Johnny Cash, Sheryl Crow, Neil Finn, John Wesley Harding, Joe Jackson, Los Lobos, Joan Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Bonnie Raitt, Squeeze, Richard Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, and the Waterboys. In 2003, Thomas was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Along with Davey Faragher of the Imposters and Val McCallum of Jackson Browne's band, they create country rock magic with their band Jackshit. You can catch "Beau" "Shorty" and "Piece O" Shit this month at The Baked Potato on August 8 and 22 and next month at McCabe's on Sept 8. I asked Pete about his childhood in England, playing with Elvis, and California cowboy culture.

How old were you when you started playing music? When did you get your first set of drums? What drew you to the instrument?

I was 9, my grandmother bought me a snare-drum and cymbal. I made the rest of the kit out of old oil drums and biscuit tins. The inspiration was seeing the Beatles on TV, watching Ringo it seemed like a good job.

So many musicians credit Elvis Costello and the Attractions as the band that inspired them to go into music. What drummer influenced you?

My favourite drummers were:- Ringo, Charlie Watts and Mitch Mitchell

How did you meet Elvis Costello? How did you join the Attractions?

In 1977 I was living in Topanga Canyon, California. Elvis' manager, Jake Riviera, came to LA with the Damned. He played me EC's demos. It seemed like a good time to be in England so I went back and auditioned for EC with the other two Attractions who had answered ads in the Melody Maker. It seemed like we formed in a day.

What is the most memorable place that you have toured with Elvis?

There is a small seaside town in Sweden called Hunnebustrand (check spelling). We had a lot of fun there and decided it was the "best place in the world".

You kicked off the Elvis Costello and the Imposters tour on May 2 here in LA at the House of Blues. The energy in the audience was palpable. The playlist included songs from My Aim is True, Armed Forces, Imperial Bedroom, and Trust. How did it feel to focus on the material from the 70's and 80's?

The material EC chose seemed to involve a lot of quirky drum parts like "Lover's Walk" and "Strict Time". I really enjoyed myself.

What brought you back to California? Why did you choose to live in Los Angeles?

In the late nineties I seemed to be coming to LA a lot to do sessions and after doing a record with Vonda Sheperd, the singer on Ally McBeal, she offered me a job playing on the show's soundtrack for 3 years.

Your country rock band Jackshit was named "Best Bar Band" by Los Angeles Magazine. When did you form the band with Val McCallum and Davey Faragher? How did the concept and characters come about?

Following on from the previous question, the best thing about the Ally McBeal band was that two of the other guys, Val & Davey, seemed to share a good sense of humour and a love of rocking. psychedelic country/soul music. The name was suggested by a keyboard player called Mark Hart who was briefly in the band.

What intrigues you about California and cowboy culture?

The whole Laurel Canyon country rock scene of the late 60's and early 70's always seemed very attractive and I loved how in the old Gene Autry films they are chasing trucks on horseback and riding into recording studios wearing fantastic shirts.

What is your favorite music venue in LA?

The Baked Potato

Jackshit often features guest performers. When you play at The Baked Potato August 8 and 22nd and at McCabe's September 8, should the audience expect some surprises?

Yes, there will be a surprise. A tribute to one of the darker LA bands of the 70's.

Where do you buy your cowboy clothes?

Kings on Ventura in Studio City

Where do cowboys eat in LA?

Allegria on Sunset and Maltman

What are you listening to now?

Top Secret I'm afraid. It has to do with our surprise!

Jackshit at
- The Baked Potato on Wednesday, August 8 and 22 at 9:30pm
- McCabe's on September 8 at 8pm

The duo, with Deschanel on lead vocals and Ward playing lead guitar, was joined by a crack three-piece band (Davey Faragher from Elvis Costello’s Imposters sat in on bass) and Becky Stark of opening act Lavender Diamond on backing vocals.
