What are you listening to right now?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

An MP3 of the Suburban Lawns' "Janitor":

http://www.peteykins.com/Audioblog/Janitor.mp3

Not the greatest recording but it's all I could find on the net. When I went to see that outdoor showing of "Repo Man" in LA, the DJ played this before the show began and it brought back a lot of memories of listening to Rodney Bingenheimer's old radio show on KROQ. My cousin Carrie couldn't keep herself from laughing every time they got to the chorus. What a beautiful little nugget of new wave goofiness.

I finally got around to burning a CD from the bonus discs (with 10 bonus tracks). I also did Girls Girls Girls, which is a great selection of originals that could be better sequenced in places.

The unusual thing about Girls Girls Girls was that the tracks were different depending on the format you bought it.

I'm currently listening to Elvis and the Imposters from Bristol in 2003.

On initial listens, not quite as good as 1998's Weird Tales. Still good though... Jeff Tweedy & Gary Louris' version of The Kinks' "Strangers" is beautiful.

With half a year behind us I'm pretty sure this will make my Top 10 of 2006.

This has got to be one of the most talked-about bands in the last couple of months. Is the hype deserved, Bad A ?

I'm so pissed off I was in the bar when Guillemots supported Rufus Wainwright.

Saw these late last year supporting Broken Social Scene (and kicking their collective asses). This is the new tour EP.

Without doubt. I shambled onto them as my local record emporium had their last EP in stock. As it's one of those stores where their recommendations are almost always spot on I took a punt and wasn't disappointed. The album, however, is a far superior work. Some of the music is quite stunning. A couple of listens should cement its reputation as a fine, fine record.

Re-recorded version of Franz F's Eleanor Put Your Boots Back On with cute animated video. Prefer the LP original, but this is a nice reworking all the same.

Also, a couple of things I stole from my sister's collection last week, Stuart Staples' Leaving Songs and this insanely fun album:

Just listened to this (trying to ignore the tastefully puerile video.. God if there's one thing worse than videos that have absolutely no connection to the video and play to some cheap teen appeal, it's videos that hew to the lyrics like a script for the sake of teen appeal) and realized how very nouveau-Kinks it is, you know? Couldn't you just hear Ray D. singing it?

Frank Black is as prolific as Elvis, I'll tell ya. Have only heard one track off the latest one-- how would you characterize it, KH?

It's very much a followup to Honeycomb (a lot of the same musicians etc.) but this one isn't as laid back. There's plenty of stuff that would suit the Pixies style of playing as well. I don't think there are any weak tracks, really, and if I could have chosen my favourites and made it a single disc it would have been his best, I think. Check out If Your Poison Gets You, Johnny Barleycorn, In The Time Of My Ruin, Fitzgerald, Don't Cry That Way or Raiderman.

Some guys from his forum has put this cool little introduction together:

or check out three highlöights here:

I inadvertently got off the Frank Black track after Show Me Your Tears, though I think Tallulah (who is 30 today, btw) gave me a copy of Honeycomb... if I can just find it... :)
