I am also planning to see Chris Difford in March. I just found out about it earlier today. I am very much looking forward to this show. I thought his solo cd was great.

Chris was pretty good live when he supported Elvis (although how he messed up Cool for Cats after only over 25 years of singing it!). I think he'll be worth seeing.

MDM - who's John Prine?

SoLack - where are you seeing Glenn Tilbrook? I might go to Reading.

Amy Rigby - Very good. She did a cover of a Wreckless Eric song.....something about going around the world to find your lover.

Well, when I wrote "Steve Forbert tomorrow", I meant that I was seeing him tomorrow, which would have been Friday last. But you, of course, would have been more than welcome! And he did mention that he was heading to Pawling next. The man of the house and I both enjoyed him very much. He's got this self-deprecating sense of humor, and he's smart, and he seemed like he was enjoying himself, which is always fun to watch. He played lots of the old favorites, and many off his latest release, and seemed pleased to be playing to a knowledgeable crowd. And he's got the Dick Clark thing going on, in that he doesn't appear to have aged at all in the last 25 years. If you like him at all, and you have the opportunity to see him, do it.

Oops, sorry about that. I really did want to make that show. Hopefully he'll be back again.

Local boy Robyn Hitchcock returns to Cambridge this weekend to play the nice, small venue The junction, with Peter Buck in the band. Tempted to go, though for the latter as I don't really know RH. Any fans of him/Soft Boys?

Tift Merritt and Son Volt this Wednesday in Raleigh. Seeing Tift will make me recall my sweet night of seeing EC in NO with Tift opening and El Vez, Shatterproof and Bobster at my side!

I'm just in from the sold-out first date here in Dublin of the NME Awards tour. The latest U.K. hype sensation The Arctic Monkeys just about justified the acclaim they are getting. However , they were second on the bill so they only seemed to be getting warmed up and then their 45 minute set was over. Rock solid drumming and choppy guitar riffs abounded. The group members are as ordinary and unkept as their photos have show. The kids in the audience went mental , with swaying crowds in front of the stage.

Headliners Maximo Park are from the Franz Ferdinand school of identikit rock , all poses and silly hair and sillier clothes. The lead singer seemed genuine enough but got tiresome with his earnest intros. to his songs. A stagefront keyboards player managed to pump in some interesting sounds but would get lost in the mix as the songs just got louder. I left before the end of their set - it had been a long day and I'd seen enough.

The 'Monkeys are No. 1 in the charts - its the first time in along , long while since I've seen a group at the same time they have been so. So I guess that means I am , for a fleeting moment , 'down with the kids' or something....

Unacceptable comparison! FF have genuine talent and write great songs, and have neither silly hair nor clothes, whereas Maximo Park are absurd in, as you say, their over-earnestness, and the singer's hair is grotesque. He made a speech at the Mercury awards or somewhere saying 'this music means everything to us' in this ghastly po-faced way, and the songs are completely unmemorable. Glad you saw the Arctic Ms. I wonder how many tens of thousands of CDs they sold today. Good on them.

I'm going to see Morrissey! Tickets for the 27 or so non-London shows went on sale at 9.00, and it appears they were all gone by 9.30. He's not playing my town, but he is playing up the road in Kings Lynn. Best news is it's standing, and this is a pretty small venue. 4 months tonight I'll be there. I can't wait, this is sure to be a gig to remember.

Someone was meant to be getting me tickets for the Reading show, I haven't heard if they got them yet. All the shows have sold out in one day.

Or one hour. Amusing that there was an advert in the Guardian for them. Why advertise them?

Saw The Rakes last night at a venue in Portsmouth that holds about 600 all standing. They were pretty damn good, and had the place buzzing. Mostly young crowd as expected but we weren't the only 40somethings. One of the support bands, White Rose Movement, were quite good too despite the naff name.

Wishing they'd been second act opening for Franz F at Ally Pally, would very gladly have swapped the boring Editors for them. Missed all of Rakes' set.

Just saw Pgh. symphony doing three works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Guest conductor was Pinchus Zukerman and guest pianist was Yefim Bronfman. House was sold-out. Wonderful show. The last time my dad took me to the symphony was when I was nine years old and I fell asleep. I only got to go because his girlfriend broke her back yesterday. I did not fall asleep this time. I admit I yawned and took my glasses off to rub my eyes a few times.

After the symphony there was a 'Q & A' period (if one chose to stay) and they discussed etiquette at that symphony. It seems it is considered inappropiate to applaude inbetween the musical movements of the piece. At a previous performance they had had a busload of college students and they were applauding inbetween. Some of the older folks were not appreciative of this. Had I of not been with an older audience made up of stuffed shirts I wouldn't have known either.

EC cleared up that dilemma for at least the 1st Sydney Opera House show. In introing the Il Sogno suite, he said: '...some people think, "should I applaud, should I not applaud..."... Just make all the noise you want.'

Amy Allison did a great show here in Dublin tonight. On for about half an hour , she and Jon Grabof did songs from all her albums. Her cheerful delivery and between song banter made for a very engaging show. After she introduced her song 'The Whiskey Makes You Sweeter' as being a song we might know from Laura Cantrell's cover I could see head's all around the place turning to each other in recognition of that aspect of the song. A little later some gobshite shouted up ' Amy - are we ever going to have sex again?' . After some perplexed looks Jon politely said that the shouter was thinking of Amy Rigby and the song with that title on one of her albums. Amy smiled and told the man a emphatic 'No!'. After doing her most excellent cover of Morrisey's Everyday Is Like Sunday( I sang along with every word!) , she finished with her Dad's (Mose Allison) song Was.

Later , after a cracking show by headliner Patty Griffin , I had a brief chat with Amy and Jon. She was appreciative of the support etc. I bought copies of her albums from her for a fraction of the cost in the shops here. Jon remembered a conversation I had with him in Bristol, England after a show by Laura Cantrell in Dec. '02. He especially remembered , with a shake of his head, the tiny, basement venue . I asked him if there were any plans for recording with Laura and he said something about how he would be delighted to be part of any . The tiny Whelans venue was still heaving with people when I left , happy after a great evening.

Lucinda - back in the UK

Post by ReadyToHearTheWorst »

Don't know if it's been announced yet, but Lucinda Williams is touring the UK in November - finally rescheduling the dates cancelled back in July.

Now, if I can only find my old tickets ...
