LOL! - Elvis on Pop Quiz!
I remember this being on in the early 80s - and he's battling Nick Lowe!

I used to enjoy that programme, but don't remember Elvis being on it. I'll have to watch it tonight. Apparantly from 09 October 1984.

Re: LOL! - Elvis on Pop Quiz!
That really was enjoyable to watch. Thanks, Neil.
But that show...what's up with that? The no-nonsense set, lacking garish colors and flashing lights and bikini girls...the host is all business, in spite of the mullet...all the players have such serious faces...nobody looks like they're having much fun, except maybe Nick. No spoiled Rock Star hi-jinks--no spitballs, no dancing on the desks, etc. Everyone just sits in their chair and writes things down using the supplied pen & paper. The whole thing looks like it was produced by (and in) the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Was that a popular show? Did it run for a long time?

Back in '84 it was essential viewing. It was one of the few places to see pop videos and the like. The relative seriousness was , at the time, rather daringly frivilous. The highminded BBC was giving over all of half an hour of primetime to it when it could have been doing a show about Felicity Kendall and the prudent uses of garden shears of something.
I seem to remember Elvis talking about this show somewhere, something about it being recorded at 11 in the morning and everyone having hangovers etc. I'll have rumage in that rather forbidding box of print cuttings I have from the time and see if I can find anything. It's heartbreaking, by the way, to see a fit and engaging John Martyn.

For those who don't know the Host is a man called Mike Read, he was a very famous DJ at the time and was on everything.
He was certainly an aquired taste and was known as Cliff Richard's mate. He has had lots of money troubles since his heyday going bankrupt twice and recently had to sell his entire record collection which was worth I believe around a million pounds. He was thought to be a bit flash and full of himself but I met him at an event a friend of mine organised where he was guest DJ. In fact I found him to be a very shy and nervous man.
That is one stellar line up though. Must be the last time teenage girls screamed after Elvis. What a great find.

Ypsilanti, yes, it does seem a bit tame a stiff compared to today's stuff... but times have changed! People aren't as reverent any more. And yes, it's clear that the thing was taped first thing in the morning - Elvis, who was playing every night in Hammersmith when this was recorded, sounds as though he's just got up after singing for hours the night before.
By the way, I didn't notice earlier that there's a part 3:

Elvis looks more like a pop star than any of the others! Huey Lewis runs second.

I guess I was raised on those sleazy American game shows from the 1970's, where everything was candy-colored and all the participants were super drunk and horny all the time...
For example... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUwRY_3Pnyg
The BBC seems kind of scary...

He looks like a premonition of Bono six years down the line.

The clip is no longer on Youtube. Does anyone have this show? I'd love to see it.

Oh Lord, that picture. Great as it is as a snapshot, it's such a snapshot of the patriarchy. OMG, the 80s!

Just seeing Elvis next to Phil Collins given the Agnetha from ABBA story makes this all the more entertaining.
