How is everyone doing?

Post by ice nine »

I hope everyone is doing well. Personally, I am revisiting CDs that I have not listened to in a few years. I listen to one EC and another artist per day. Todays listening included 'Shaved Fish' and 'Double Fantasy"

Whilst on tour following EC and The Imposters around the U.K. I loaded the car with CDs I hadn't listened to in a while - mainly all of The Smiths (except "The Queen Is Dead"), "Setting Sons", "All Mod Cons" and "Sound Effects" by The Jam, "Walls And Bridges" by JL, the 50 year re-issue of The Double "White Album", "My Flame Burns Blue" by EC and a couple of Tame Impala CDs - (see how finger on the pulse I am with the latter - given to me by my son !)
AS I mentioned elsewhere, I also bought "Look Now" on CD for the first time ( I had it on two different coloured vinyl copies) at Blackpool and hammered that for a while. Now back at home it's been more a case of sorting out the tour performances and my 40 year anniversary work on the Elvis and The Attractions European tour from 1980.
I'm lucky enough to have a big garden and the weather here has been lovely so we've been working hard there reclaiming a disused railway embankment and clearing the brambles off a stone wall -it's been fine for us. I return to work in the NHS on April 27th so it's an oasis before returing to the storm !

Everything is fine in VG Towers. It took a little while to get used to working at home, particularly when the two Mini-VGs have to do their schoolwork and Mrs VG needs to work. The last two weeks have been good as the schools have been on the Easter break and Mrs VG only needed to work here and there. School restarts on Monday so that will be interesting. I’m enjoying the commute to work though I.e. the walk downstairs!

Given that the current focus of my work is advising people on Coronavirus and the Job Retention Scheme, and that changes daily (and hourly), it’s hard to do other work as well. I’m in a lot of conference calls.

BUT more importantly health wise we are all good. It’s about minimising risk.

Stay safe everyone.

Hi everyone

Yes, all healthy on the Balcony too, but it's a strain.

Having been retired for 2.5 years I have already got used to not going to work. My wife's job has been suspended pending 'normality' resuming. But our daughter works in a local hospital and so her risk of infection is a constant worry. At least Mrs Balcony can give Ms Balcony a lift to and from work hence avoiding public transport. Lots of good stuff about supporting the NHS, including this from some of Liverpool's finest : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzDv7Tz27j4 it made me smile. Ms Balcony is grateful for outpourings of support for key workers such as herself, but would appreciate more EVERYONE sticking to the very letter of the social distancing instructions.

I cried buckets when I learned that John Prine was critically ill. Given his health struggles in recent years only one outcome was ever likely. I attribute my reaction to two things, the impact John's songs have made on me (ashamedly late in life) and somehow JP's troubles somehow being a proxy for my wider concerns for family, friends and strangers.

A candle in the darkness - not sure if this is available outside the UK, but here the National Theatre are putting some of their finest productions free to view on their Youtube channel, each available for a week. Sorry you've already missed James Corden's tour de force : One Man Two Governors, and Jane Eyre. But this week it's Treasure Island, complete with a female Jim (Jimima) Hawkins, hugely entertaining https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwNvC8sFTEU From Thursday it's Twelfth Night, where music is the food of love, featuring Tamsin Greig as Malvolia.

Stay safe everyone

I'm doing pretty well. It's weird, I haven't been bored throughout this entire thing since I've come home from school in March. I mainly just go on Discord, Reddit, and do homework.

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Kate Bush and Elvis Costello, and I've been listening to Get Happy!! to prepare for the Survivor poll on Tuesday.

For our part, we just want people to adhere to the government advice - here in the West Country we have had people caught driving down from London to "do a spot of fishing" and they thought it would be OK because there's not much Covid19 down there  and we regularly see people on their third walk of the day with their pets. If we relax now, the virus could take a stranglehold and, in the most dire circumstances, mutate and wipe out hundreds of thousands. God bless Mini TB and all those still providing services which keep us on a safe and stable foundation. We are in challenging times, we must act responsibly for everyone's sake.

Steady as she goes in the Alberta foothills. Soaking my feet in Dylan's two new songs, and [starting first listen this morning] Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters, and 15 feet of snow this winter slowly melting. Hope everyone is a-okay. Oh, wait. Canadian. Maybe eh?-okay is better.

Glad you're OK, mini heatwave here in Devon, nowhere near that amount of snow even on the top of Dartmoor, though it got iced up just the once over the winter. Now basking in 25 degrees in our beautiful garden, Mrs. Sulky doing all the work and me nodding approvingly out the window whilst working on some recordings!

All is fine in MikeH towers, too. Working for the local authority and dealing with social care we are busier than ever and working from home. Thanks to Sulky and Top Balcony Junior for their work in these tough times.

John Prine must have passed be by completely as I have not heard much by him - any recommendations to start with?

Glad you're OK MikeH and I guess you're also bearing the brunt of scared, anxious and struggling people trying to cope with totally unforseen circumstances - hope this eases for you soon.
PS - any requests ?

Hi M

Glad you're ok. If Jardine's offer falls a tad short of the full John Prine Experience, here's a link to a tribute in Rolling Stone with youtubes to illustrate, as they say "there’s really no such thing as a bad John Prine song. Here are 25 of his best" : https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... 71-974936/

Hope something there chimes with you. As usual EC's eulogy was fantastic, available here if you haven't seen it : https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... te-983743/

All the best

If a nearly 100 year old can raise £26 million for the NHS walking around his garden think how much this could raise - apart from a few raised
eyebrows !!

Sulky, hope your return to the nursing sector will be safe. It is really concerning to hear all the news about lack of PPE. I hope you are well protected.

I'm lucky enough to have a job I can do from home, and am finding it okay - not going stir crazy here in Middlesex.

I am utterly appalled at our government here in the UK. And I was already appalled at them before we went into this crisis. When I thought I was unshockable at the depths that Johnson and his crew would go to, he has topped it.

The lying. Going to Tory donors like Dyson to make ventilators when actual ventilator makers were ignored.

The speech about herd immunity that he made in February to businessmen, basically saying that my parents (vulnerable group) are expendable to the juggernaut of business - let Covid do its thing, anything but slowing the wheels of industry.

Yes, I applaud anyone who sets up and runs a successful business. But not at the expense of everyone else. There is such a thing as a society - and we are a civilisation, we are not in the jungle, however much fat cats want it to be a jungle.

Not everyone is born with a business brain, or born into inherited business wealth. But the 1 per cent see non-business types as coal to run their furnace.

It's sickening to the core.

As Elvis said " 'Liberal' is an insult now, and care is what you pay for."

Luckily we still have the NHS, but the Tories have been chipping away at it for years. To see them clapping the nurses has been disgusting - they cheered when nurses' pay was capped back in 2017. The utter hypocrisy.

In what we see of America over here, the word 'socialism' is bandied about as some horrific diabolical thing to be avoided at all costs.

But surely to God we can have business-based economies with a social conscience? It can't be that hard, can it? Who needs billions and billions of pounds/dollars? Have business AND social care.

FFS!!!!
