Sounds of the 70s - Interview with Dave Robinson, BBC Radio 2, Feb. 2019

Post by Man out of Time »

Tom Robinson is currently "sitting in" for Johnny Walker and hosting "Sounds of the 70s" on BBC Radio 2.

On 24 February 2019, at 3pm, GMT, Tom will be joined by Dave Robinson from Stiff Records. According to the programme's website -

"Dave Robinson set up punk label Stiff Records in 1976 with his pal, Jake Riviera, who also happened to have been in Dr. Feelgood. Frontman Lee Brilleaux provided the £400 loan to set it up and the rest, as they say, is history.

Stiff became a beacon for the punk movement in the UK, with its provocative slogans and unique artwork. It released what is now widely regarded as the first punk single, 'New Rose' by the Damned and went on to have the likes of Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric and Ian Dury on its books. Stiff Records ceased activity in 1986 but its now back up and running under the Universal Music umbrella. "

Now of course, Dave Robinson was never "in" Dr. Feelgood, rather he was their tour manager. He was key in signing Elvis, and Stiff has an interesting history, so worth a listen. For more on Stiff there is also this thread.

For non-UK members of the Fan Forum, BBC Radio 2 is available to listen online and you can "listen again" through BBC Sounds, for up to a month after the programme is first broadcast.

I am on the Facebook page for this show. Amazing there was a woman on there named Alison who said she didn't know there was a song named after her. Amazing to think there is a person of a certain age who had never heard Alison.

Sunday amazingly there was two Elvis songs on UK radio Alison on this show followed by High Fidelity on Absolute 80's
