New Elvis song in "Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool", on Oscar longlist

Post by FAVEHOUR »

A review of this new film in the Guardian notes that a new Costello song plays over the credits: "You Shouldn't Look At Me That Way".

This one popped up on the ASCAP site a few months back.

Interesting that the film concerns Gloria Grahame, who was featured in the Detour shows.

Interesting to see that the film is produced by Eon Productions, the same producers of the James Bond films. Maybe someday Elvis will get to do a 007 theme.

Officially intrigued - new material at last! Plus, would be great to get an Oscar nomination for best song for our Elvis!

In his tweet Elvis mentioned Mary McCartney.
This made me think about this thread: http://www.elviscostellofans.com/phpBB3 ... =2&t=10986
Were they filming the Elvis song?

That's brilliant detective work - have you been "watching" - very likely that the Elvis song/s were being filmed as this is indeed the Liverpool Playhouse Theatre stage, which EC also hashtags.

In my dreams there's also going to be a hometown gig in November to co-incide with the Liverpool movie premier, fingers very crossed...

Good thought SP. In his Tweet, about the filming in Liverpool Chris "Toast" said:

"Filming yesterday with Elvis Costello and some seriously heavy hitters in the film industry! For a project I know a fair bit about but can't say anything! "

This makes me think there is going to be either a single release of the song, with accompanying promo video, or a promo for the film, with the song and some footage of EC involved. Something like this from Notting Hill, which I know we all love to bits:

V excited to hear these. His people need to seriously target Radio 2 to make the 'A side' a hit. Elaine Paige on Sunday often plays songs from films, and we know Jeremy Vine is a big Elvis fan.

Toronto Exclusive: Stand Back Paul, Stella, Mary McCartney Directing Video for Elvis Costello Song for Annette Bening Film

by Roger Friedman

September 10, 2017

Yes, you know Paul McCartney. And Stella McCartney, one of his daughters. But here comes Mary McCartney, photographer daughter of Paul and his late and much missed wife Linda. Mary, I can tell you, is now a video director. She’s preparing a video now for Elvis Costello’s “You Shouldn’t Look at Me That Way.” This is the song that plays over the end titles of Paul McGuigan’s excellent new film, “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool,” which premiered here yesterday.

Annette Bening plays Hollywood siren and Oscar winner Gloria Grahame, Jamie Bell is her young lover Peter Turner. The story is based on Peter’s memoir and produced by the James Bond team of Barbara Broccoli and Michael S. Wilson.

The backstory for the song is that McGuigan and Broccoli went to to a Costello show last year at which, by coincidence, Costello mentioned Grahame in his patter. “We knew it was meant to be,” McGuigan told me last night at Sony Pictures Classics’s annual star studded dinner. “We went backstage and told him about the movie. He said, I’ll write you a song. And sure enough, on Christmas Day, it arrived in our emails. And it was perfect. ”

And he’s right. “You Shouldn’t Look at Me That Way” should be a Best Song nominee. Of course, the McCartneys and Costello have a history of collaborations. Paul and Elvis had a hit album together in 1989 with “Flowers in the Dirt.”

As for “Film Stars,” watch for Bening to be a strong contender for Best Actress. She does her usual fine work as Grahame, creating a captivating portrait of the movie star’s tragic life.

What is it with Elvis and doing songs for films on Christmas Day ?

Richard Allinson (July 30 1999 - BBC Radio 2 -UK)

Interview
with Trevor Jones, composer of the score for Notting
Hill, who has this to say about the choice of EC to
sing “She”:

“We had used the Charles Aznavour version and I think
it was at one of our meetings with Richard Curtis
where he suggested maybe a more contemporary version
might be what we needed ... On Christmas Day, Elvis
and I spoke for most of the afternoon
. I remember
having a cremated turkey at one point (laughs) because
he kept calling and saying, Could you send me a
version in this key? And then, an hour later, he’d
call again and say, How about a version in that key?
And we went around the houses until, finally, we ended
up in the original key. And he settled for that. He
said, ‘You know, I’m going to try it in the original
key, ‘and it was superb. It was the right choice for
his voice at that point.”

Did you ask him why he used the n-word in Oliver's Army??? I would have asked.
Or ask about Ray Charles, while you're at it?

A friend in the cinema trade who saw the film in Toronto tells me -

'Fine prominent use of Pump it up and a Costello song during the end credits that I didn't know. And I didn't even hear it because it had to hurry to another screening. The film itself was elegant but really slow - almost stopping itself.'

Yes, the new song is called 'You Shouldn't Look At Me That Way'. Shades of 'You Little Fool'? ("Don't look at me that way - you know it isn't right")

I now truly regret that I didn't stay during the end credits. And that I didn't hang around for EC on the red carpet in Toronto. Lesson learned...
