"AN EVENING WITH ELVIS COSTELLO
SOLO IN CONCERT

Elvis Costello is intimate in Roma

The versatile British music veteran Elvis Costello is on May 16, 2016 for an intimate solo concert at the Roma. The last decades he appeared already in our country with the Sugar Canes, The Allen Toussaint Band, Steve Nieve, The Imposters and even The Attractions.

Costello's solo performances are legendary events each. In 1989 he received a meadow in T/W silent and afterwards he held a full Elizabeth Hall (2011) and Royal Circus (2012 and 2014) glued to his seat. Who was recently in Brussels knows that Costello has lost none of his persuasiveness.

Which songs Costello will get exactly stable in May, he knows yet, but he will blow you away everyone again with his voice, guitar, piano and songs, because the fans are already assured.

or as our friend google translate prefer to express it:

Unfortunately, Elvis Costello must concert this evening in Roma - cancel Antwerp because of a respiratory infection.

Last minute it was decided not to continue the concert.

All ticket holders will be notified personally concerning exchange or refund.

Artist and organizers still are trying to make the concert later proceed.

Article in Dutch published just now in De Morgen online reads:

Elvis Costello annuleert concert in zaal De Roma

De beslissing is "last minute" genomen.

Or in "English" via Google Translate:

"Elvis Costello cancels concert in De Roma

"Elvis Costello has cancelled the concert that he must play this evening at De Roma in Antwerp because of a respiratory infection. The press officer of concert organizer Greenhouse Talent announced in a press release. The decision was made "last minute".

All ticket holders will be notified in person in connection with an exchange or refund. The artist and organizers still are trying to rearrange the concert for a later date."

It seems Larkin Poe are still appearing, presumably playing for more than 30 minutes, so good luck to them.

Brilliant show, even better than yesterday!
I will post a setlist tomorrow, but I will share one thing already: Elvis premiered another new song, a sequel to Jimmy Standing In The Rain. The title sounds something like "bury me underline'.

‘This tour is called the Detour (omweg) tour ‘cause that’s what we call de (the) tour where I come from’, zei Costello – ’t was niet z’n enige doordenker waarvoor je kennis van de Engelse taal op scherp moest staan. Een andere was ‘The crappy design of this instrument more than makes up in fidelity, which is more than you can say of most men’ was een andere.

Ironie was een van z’n wapens, de hele avond door (‘…I was staying at the ritzy Howard Johnson hotel’ – in werkelijkheid is dat een goedkope luizenbak voor beginnende muzikanten met een luizig budget).

Hij grapte over Apple: ‘I got a job in computers… back then it was just me and a guy called Steve’.

I was trying to rid the world of alcohol… mostly by drinking it’. En: ‘She was a siren in a slinky satin dress sipping a Singapore Sling… Try saying that after five or six Singapore Slings’.

I didn’t want to be a magician…did I say ‘Magician’? I meant ‘musician’’), ‘…film noir…which is French for, eh, film noir.’ , ‘…Just like me, she had to leave town and change her name to become famous. Just like me, she looks pretty good in a cocktail dress.’)

Concert Review: Elvis Costello (Roma, 11 and 12 March)

4 stars (out of 5)

If Elvis Costello in bed is just as inventive, unpredictable, flexible and passionate as on stage, then sexlife with Diana Krall must be at least interesting.

It says something about the status Costello in England enjoying the super comedian Harry Enfield is willing to introduce him in the video, as the typetje a soggy vintage showbiz creep. The whole decor of Costello's Detour tour was indeed heavy retro, complete with shade, fifties TV set, primitive Napoleon Dynamite megaphone and old school dandy hat and cane. "This tour is called the Detour (detour) tour 'cause that's what we call the (the) tour where I come from," Costello said -' twas not his only by thinker which your knowledge of the English language was sharply stand. Another was "The crappy design of this instrument more than makes up in fidelity, All which is more than you can say or must one" was another.

Irony was one of his arms, the whole evening ( "... I was staying at the ritzy Howard Johnson Hotel '- in reality it is a cheap luizenbak for aspiring musicians with a lousy budget).

He joked about Apple: "I got a job in computers ... back then it was just me and a guy called Steve.

The former alcoholic Costello was not averse to self-mockery: "I was trying to rid the world of alcohol ... mostly by drinking it." And: 'She was a siren in a slinky satin dress sipping a Singapore Sling ... Try saying That after five or six Singapore Slings.

Costello - with sunglasses and bright red hat and shoes that they call in England a brothel creepers (bordeelsluipers) - seven-recorded guitars, piano and ukulele. Not always well, to be honest, sometimes so boisterous that the song had suffered under it - a punk of 62. He was not always in tune, but his enthusiasm and passion and sense of humor offset the minimal flaws amply.

During his Spectacular Spinning Songbook tour a few years ago the public was choosing the songs, this time he did it himself. There were songs long forgotten actresses (the beautiful "Stella Hurt," about Teddy Grace's 'fall from grace').

I missed The Attractions and Confederates and the Imposters during songs like 'Watch Your Step', 'Pump It Up, "" I Can not Stand Up for Falling Down "and" Watching the Detectives "did all Costello's subtle use of a Over pedal several times him sound like a group. Especially "Watching the Detectives" degenerated into something that could make a ghost orchestra for a horrofilm. It had little to do with the original, but it sounded potent. And of course today Costello is touring solo (as Randy Newman doing for years) because it is less expensive and thus yields more than one group. But I do not think anyone complained in Roma, especially when Costello on Saturday during a lovely 'I Want You' acoustic and unamplified took a walk through the hall - Sunday he did not do that, but it was the version even better and Passioneler and electric guitar, with the most subtle effects (echo, vibrato, tremolo ...) that what is essentially a simple love song is lifted to the level of mythic hymn.

On as Lupe-O-Tone Retro TV dressed videowall (well, a refined white curtain) were photos from Costello's past by, interspersed with images of legends from Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley. And a poster of a festival in the eighties including David Bowie and Lou Reed - Costello is the only survivor of the lineup by then.

The two were storyteller shows a format, and he does not get enough appreciation, more or less invented by Ray Davies. Unplugged, with an arsenal of jokes and anecdotes.

Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus put almost all of his family tree in the sun, from his grandfather who was sent as a trumpet player in the trenches over his crooning to his adulterous father, aunts and sisters - triggered a modest "Jimmie Standing in the Rain, "a patch" Brother Can You Spare a Dime "on top. "My grandfather was just not a dwarf: standing up he was smaller than his rifle with bayonet. We MacManussen grow every generation ten centimeters. Within a hundred years we will be a race of giants. "

His father Ross (Declan, Elvis is the doppelganger) occurred on that legendary night in 1963 when said at the Royal Variety Performance John Lennon "You can applaud, and the people in the expensive lodges (he referred to the royal family) can rattling "with their jewels. Costello said dryly: "Because Marlene Dietrich, Burt Bacharach and four gastjes from Liverpool that night the show steel, nobody remembers my father when 'I Had a Hammer" played, one of the favorite arbeidshymnes of the Queen Mother, understandable , considering that they themselves had worked no seconds in her life. "

The screen first appeared a cute picture of the five-year Declan at the piano, the first of a series of photos of his father Ross. "My father already came on TV when I was four years old. One time my mother caught me when I was sitting armed with a screwdriver behind the TV, I wanted to see if dad sat there really. One schroeverdraaiermoment later and I had not been here. My father was a crooner, who looked like Peter Sellers or, for the youngsters among you in Austin Powers. He played pragmatically what the market demanded, even covers of "It's Not Unusual" by Tom Jones and "See Emily Play" by Pink Floyd. But later he had a psychedelic period with his band: The Hand Embroidered Lemon Peel. Although I have him always suspected that it was just a way to decorate hippiegrietjes. "

Elvis also told how his father had sung on cruise ships, once for Duke Ellington: "I signed yet my father has asked Duke. Duke Ellington was terrified of drowning and paced day and night on the deck to stay awake and alert in case the ship sank - true story. This song is about my father ... "Whereupon he a nice" Suit of Lights "set in.

There were a lot of songs about whether spoke failed relationships and adultery, not surprising for someone who is ready for his third marriage to jazz goddess Diana Krall "No Man's Woman" (including reference to Donald Trump and dry commentary 'Behind every throne there's a woman saying 'Oh my god what have I done ?!'), 'She's Pulling Out the Pin, "" I'll Wear it Proudly "... Especially Stripping Paper' was beautiful," This is about a woman which removes the layers of wallpaper in her apartment after her divorce until she arrives at the layer there was when she learned at the time to know her husband. This is perhaps the first song ever about interior design. "

"Walkin 'My Baby Back Home" Elvis wore on his wife and children, away, home. "It's Saturday, so while we sit comfortably here, my children do their homework diligently," he said sarcastically. "No, they are ten years so no doubt they are now hoisting whiskey and smoking cigars."

He also paid tribute to Allen Toussaint - even death. "I met him when we worked together on a song by Yoko Ono - not the way I thought I would get to know him. Allen found all Attractions sympathetic that even I could not say. He took me in his gold Rolls Royce would make a friend of him broccoli - I thought first that "eat broccoli" was code language, or New Orleans hose. Broccoli food with a legendary pianist, you can not invent it. I later made an arrangement of his own "Tipitina" I have just left out all the difficult chords.

'Shipbuilding' was definitely a highlight. "Veronica," "Less than Zero" and "Every Day I Write the Book" also already known Elvis his last song hated long, "I wrote him ten minutes and yet it became a hit, and as good catholic I felt guilty about that long. " He also played a few songs from a musical which he has been working for several years ( "Do not worry, there is no cat or phantom for. Well a devil, that's always useful.")

When Sunday somewhere in the room fell over a glass, grinned Elvis, who had been in Antwerp nightbirds certainly "Ah, the sound of beer bottles rolling around the room - always a good sign, and a sound that I strangely hear more in Belgium than elsewhere. It is perhaps all those beer stick monks here. "

"Alison" was the provisional final chord of the set, brought acoustic and unamplified on the edge of the stage - a showstopper, as the Americans call it. You could literally hear a pin drop - that's the power of an indestructible topballad spent a seasoned entertainer. Also nice that sounded an occasional humming of the audience, as if the drive was great singing along but the urge to each note Elvis sang to fully absorb even greater.

As often Costello played a piece or a thousand encores, including "She" ( "A song from my flamenco album, I've been told that it has achieved in Belgium gold. ')" (What's So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding "and" 45 "(" My mother was in her fourteenth saleswoman in a record. My parents met there, so you could say that I had never existed without plates.)

The two shows were largely similar and Costello also told some seemingly spontaneous joke twice (I dont wanna be a magician ... did I say 'Magician'? I meant 'musician' '),' ... film noir ... which is French for, uh, film noir. "" ... Just like me, she had to leave town and change her name to become famous. Just like me, she looks pretty good in a cocktail dress. ")

Yet he often improvised. Once, not jobs, but in the States, broke during "Accidents Will Happen" a string of his guitar. Other musicians then put the number still to their roadie brings another guitar. Costello sang on the other hand further when he stepped to the piano and played "Accidents will happen" on there, illustrating the title. That kind, alert, experienced and always on his feet belandende musician he is.

Also "Accidents Will Happen" was good for an anecdote about a wild affair with a female taxi driver in Tucson, Arizona: "... long before a wall that is separated from Mexico."

It says something about Costello's oeuvre (no fancy word) that with two shows a total of five hours and forty songs still remained just sit and wait (five!): No "God Give Me Strength" (he's the high notes can not anymore), no "Chelsea", no "New Lace Sleeves ', not a' Jack of All Parades 'no' Brilliant Mistake ', not' My Brave Face ', not' Clubland 'no' Oliver's Army ', not' Almost Blue ", not" When I Was Cruel ", no ...

And it says something about him, especially about his generosity, he both evenings the handful of Belgians thanked last year when his concert was canceled an hour before the Roma still had bothered to listen to the sisters of Larkin Poe , "because I know that as the headliner cancels at the last minute, much less dear people than you would pelt the schedule with bottles.

Like Randy Newman Costello sometimes makes jokes about the city or the country where he plays - Newman smirks in Belgium about the Germans and the Dutch, and vice versa. Costello made no reference to "King of America", the first CD 'The King of Belgium "would be called. But he said after "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" Well, not without sarcasm: "I was not sure that a proud and special nation like Belgium would appreciate a song about self-hatred and shame, but if you have it: we all carry within us '. And he praised it three times, the Roma ( "This beautiful theater ...") and indirectly the hordes of volunteers who so unique project running smoothly.

It was not the best concerts I ever saw Costello, but certainly memorable evenings.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

The opening song was not "Red shoes", but "Less than zero" (on electric guitar)
The song he played here live for the first time was printed as "Under lime" on the setlist
