A series of special presentations by The Imposters in late 2016: Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers Tour

(...)
So, if this unfortunate turn of events should extend the life of “Detour” into 2017 and beyond our presently scheduled visits to Japan, Asia and a grand sweep across the United States the last days before the impending insanity, I will enjoy gambolling and gambling in this playground just a little while longer.

We will attempt to reschedule our “Detour” dates in Antwerp, Paris, Utrecht, Aalborg and Hamburg as soon as possible and perhaps this will also give us an opportunity to visit your town.

Before then, The Imposters and I will cross the Atlantic in July for shows at The Roundhouse, London, the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Barrowlands, Glasgow and Colston Hall, Bristol.

We will see you in good health.

Yours most sincerely. Elvis Costello

Please check elviscostello.com for these and other festival dates in Ireland, Holland and Belgium and look out for the announcement of a series of special presentations by the Imposters later in 2016.

I read that as a series of shows. Perhaps they'll play albums in their entirety as seems to be more common these days.

They could play something along the lines of 3-5 night stints playing different albums each night eg night one 1977-1980, night 2 1981-1984 etc.

But that would be too simple for Elvis!
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?

If this is the case, then hopefully to promote some "new" reissues.

It's going to be a busy fall this year, with a second album of The New Basement Tapes and /or a concert film from The New Basement Tapes' concert in Montalban ( http://www.elviscostellofans.com/phpBB3 ... =2&t=10175 ) and Paul McCartney's "The Flowers In The Dirt Archive Collection" ( http://www.elviscostellofans.com/phpBB3 ... =2&t=10607 ).

I'm thinking along these lines, also, yet agreed again, almost too mundane for him to play complete lp shows. Though I will graciously accept MOMOFUKU!!!

I haven't seen him in almost 2 years, since Carnegie Hall, so I will gladly take anything I can get!

I like the idea of Elvis and the Imposters playing albums in full, as there would be songs that have never been heard live such as "Love Went Mad" from PTC or "Eisenhower Blues" from KOA. Or others that have too long been out of the live set lists, like "...This Town...", "Satellite" or "Miss Macbeth" from Spike (not heard live since 1989).

Another option would be to play a show of new songs - a "Songs From The Shows" affair, to showcase the new material for stage musicals that Elvis tells us he has been busy with in recent years. That might sell fewer tickets to the general public so would fit into some smaller venues. Elvis might involve some "special guests" such as the Lovell Sisters or La Marisoul for some of the songs. There might be a chance to semi-"stage" the songs, rather as happened with "The Secret Songs" in Denmark in 2005.

Or we could see the Spectacular Spinning Songbook given another outing. I think this less likely, if Elvis has had health problems, as it gives him less control over which songs he sings if he is struggling in parts of his vocal range.

Or it could be something like "The Speaking Clock Review", perhaps with a Political message around the time of the US Presidential Elections. Just an idea, but his friends Bill and Hillary might have asked him for a favour in this respect.

Excited to see what transpires.

We now know that one of the special presentations will be "Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers" in New York on November 6.

Will Pittsburgh be another "Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers" show? Will it have its own theme?

Will there be a big reissue of Imperial Bedroom to accompagny this tour?
And after the last leg of Detour in 2017, will Elvis and the Imposters tour the world with this show?

I am sort of surprised Elvis is doing one of these shows where he revisits an old album. Although it doesn't sound like it will be playing the album in order.
If he were to pick an album Imperial Bedroom is fine with me. One of my favourites.

I was imagining they left that open window for a possible second Boston show. And a NY finale could be added the next night after supposed tour finale as well. Though I sure can't afford the Beacon twice.

This tour made me dug out the 2CD reissue of Imperial Bedroom.
I listened a few times the last days and I appriciate the album now even more.
I never listened a lot to the bonusdisc. This tour made me listen with "new" ears to the bonusdisc and it' s great.

SP

I did the same. Appreciate this is heresy to some correspondents, but IB wasn't one of my real favourite albums. Obviously some top, top songs and as you might predict I'd place MooT and Beyond as amongst his very best. However others felt a bit indulgent. So it was very enjoyable to revisit the simplicity of the demos on the extra disc and I agree, it is great.

Loved IB then, love it now. With it's artistic reach in breadth and scope, I always thought of it as his "Beatles" album. It certainly didn't hurt to have Geoff Emerick involved either. I'm disappointed he didn't bring the IB and Other Chambers Tour out west.

James Otto Seibold 24 May (post on Facebook)

last year i was commissioned by elvis costello to make some art for the imperial bedroom tour. i couldnt resist copying barney bubbles copying pablo picasso... but the barney bubbles estate didnt agree with my glee (from what i understand) and so it was bought and unused.

Chalkie Davies linked that on Facebook , with a comment that Barney would have loved it but that the 'Barney Bubbles estate' did not - make of that what you will.
