Elvis Costello and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band play Preservation Hall, 28 April 2016

Post by Man out of Time »

Reports on Twitter suggest that following his set with The Imposter, Bob Andrews (The Rumour) and The Crescent City Horns at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Elvis went on to play with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band at Preservation Hall.

A photo was posted on Twitter by Jonas Chartock. Jonas helpfully gave an indication of the setlist, which included:

Walking My Baby Back Home
Side By Side
A Face in the Crowd
Sulphur To Sugarcane

Any other information gratefully received.

The idea of "Sulfur To Sugarcane" with NOLA-style horns is a hoot. Wonder if he ad-libbed any new innuendo-laden lines for the song ("In New Orleans, the girls drop their jeans...")?

Elvis Costello sits in as 'secret' guest at Preservation Hall

Would you pay $1,000 for a concert if you didn't know ahead of time who was going to be playing? At Midnight Preserves, a regular "mystery" series presented by Preservation Hall during Jazz Fest, admission to the intimate shows often cost that and more.

Each night of Jazz Fest, after the festival shuts down for the day, guest artists play with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band at midnight -- but no one knows who the star will be until the music starts. Tickets for Midnight Preserves, now in its 12th year, cost between $100 and $1,600 and benefit the Preservation Hall Foundation.

In previous years, Jimmy Buffett, Robert Plant and Steve Earle have played Midnight Preserves. This year, Sharon Jones, Irma Tomas and Henry Butler, and Rateliff and the Night Sweats have taken the stage.

On Thursday night (April 28), the biggest name so far this year showed up for Midnight Preserves: Elvis Costello, who earlier that day headlined Jazz Fest's Gentilly Stage.

Officially, photos are not allowed at Midnight Preserves. But we found a few shots of Costello's show posted on social media.
