Tangential previous Wilde connection - Gary Barnacle was in a relationship with Kim Wilde around the same time he toured with the Elvis & The Attractions in 1984. Shane MacGowan , of the support act The Pogues, tells a tale of Gary giving him the evil eye for being too friendly with Ms Wilde.

Pete Thomas began his career in the UK Pub Rock scene, but he is best known for his 40-year association with Elvis Costello. He tells Joe about stalking Mitch Mitchell as a teenager, his working relationship with The Attractions, drinking for maximum enjoyment, getting arrested, and the existential dread that plagues us all.

Kathy Burke talks , at about 18 minutes , about Elvis playing a new song for her during the filming of Straight To Hell in 1986.

Elvis - there's hundreds of lyrics I don't understand. Can I send you a list?

Does his explanation above make any sense to you? I still don't get the lyric.

It's a reference to drinking beer.

Drinking 8 pints is equivalent to drinking an English gallon. I guess drinking 8 pints was deemed as the reference for being drunk.

There's an English saying about being "one over the 8" which means being very drunk. Elvis is simply expanding on this.

I'm sure there are better explanations than this but I hope it helps.

Is drinking 8 pints the typical night at an English pub? I'd be in the Emergency Room if I did that.
