Okay, so it might be a while yet. Though I think Elvis isn't touring at the mo, so perhaps they're making all the fixes they need to make. Could 'La Jolla' be this California theatre? http://www.lajollaplayhouse.org/ I think Burt lives in Calif, so it'd be a lot more convenient for him than Broadway.
This is very good news for us New Yorkers. From their website:

La Jolla Playhouse has created 25 productions that have transferred to Broadway, earning 35 Tony Awards. An additional 36 productions have gone on to successful runs Off-Broadway and to regional theatres across the country, including the Kennedy Center, Chicago’s Goodman Theatre and the Humana Festival, as well as to international venues in London, Brussels, Rotterdam, and Moscow.

Bacharach, now 86, continues those collaborations. He is teaming up with television writer Chuck Lorre (whose credits include “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and a Half Men”), lyricist Steven Sater (who wrote the lyrics to the Broadway musical “Spring Awakening”), Costello and others to create a musical based on the “Painted from Memory” collaboration.

“This is a very good team,” Bacharach said. He called Lorre “brilliant” in his ability to write comedy and drama. He and Costello plan to include about seven songs from the original recording in the musical, and they also have written 10 new songs, Bacharach said. The creators did a workshop of the musical with actors in New York. Because of conflicting commitments and tours, the musical most likely will premiere in a regional theater near Los Angeles, Bacharach said.

Singer/songwriter Burt Bacharach performs classics in Durham

Bacharach also continues to churn out new material. No stranger to the Broadway stage, he's working with Elvis Costello on a musical version of their 1998 collaborative album, "Painted from Memory." TV showrunner Chuck Lorre ("Two and a Half Men," "The Big Bang Theory"), a fan of the album, has written the book with Tony-winning lyricist Steven Sater ("Spring Awakening").

"Elvis and I have written 10 new songs for the show, in addition to the six or seven that were from the album," Bacharach says. "We have a very good team there. … We all have to be in the same place, which is the hardest thing to do. So, it looks like the fall, maybe September, we'll be able to be either in New York or in LA to get this thing up to the next stage of development."

Hi Burt! How are you?
I’m doing OK! I’m having a late start, because I had a meeting last night with Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. We’re trying to make a musical out of Painted From Memory, the album I did with Elvis Costello. Elvis and I wrote eight new songs. We’ll probably keep five, along with five songs from the album.

Good (positive!) updates from the Yahoo interview. Did we know they were working on a second musical together?

https://www.yahoo.com/music/this-years- ... soc_trk=tw

How are things going with the stage musicals you’ve mentioned working on with Bacharach?

Well, we’ve worked on two musicals in the last couple years, one of which is —temporarily, I hope — in abeyance. The other is the Painted From Memory musical. And I don’t want to give away the scenario. But I will say that obviously, when you plot a line through an existing repertoire, you have two or three choices. There’s the Buddy Holly Story route, where it’s basically the story of the writer’s life, and these songs pop up logically, or a fantasy like Mamma Mia. And this is neither of those things. It’s a story which is ingeniously being woven into several of the songs from the original record. Not all of them could be made to agree with that storyline, which obliged Burt and I to write more songs, which was great news for me, because I got to work with him again. The bulk of the songs obviously are collaborations in music between us, and words that serve the needs of the story and bring the characters hopefully to life. And if we see the curtain go up, I hope we don’t see it come down too quickly.

So Painted From Memory is the project we’re likely to see first?

I think that one, but there’s always another thing. I’ve been involved in various stages of development of maybe five musicals now, and some of them just get as far as an outline and maybe one sketched song, and others get 10 or 15 songs in before something happens and they don’t come to fruition. So [in the theater] you have to be prepared to work with no reward. Except, of course, when you’re working with Burt Bacharach. I mean, if the songs were never seen or heard… I played one last year on the stage, and it’s like a whole drama in itself. So, who knows what the future will bring with that material. I don’t know. But as Mort Sahl said, the future lies ahead.

Really glad the Austin Powers musical is 'in abeyance' - I just think that character has had his day, as have retro 60s spoofs! But let's hope the songs themselves surface somewhere.

There’s no slowing down 87-year-old Burt Bacharach who is still sharing his musical magic with Australia

Marrried four times, Burt Bacharach knows the look of love ... not to mention the way to San Jose.

So when the legendary American songwriter — in his 87th year — is asked to share his life affirming music around the world, he boards any number of trains and boats and planes to do that. Last month, Bacharach was in London overseeing Close To You, a new musical which “re-imagines’’ some of his 500 compositions. This month, he tours six Australian cities with a full orchestra and company of singers. After that?

“Oh, I’ll be writing more songs,’’ he drawls, on the phone from London’s Savoy Hotel. “You wanna write from the heart, you wanna write what you feel.’’

Right now, Bacharach is ‘feeling’ his way forward with Elvis Costello. The pair collaborated on an award-winning 1998 album, Painted From Memory. And 17 years on, they are writing “a whole bunch of new songs’’ for a musical to be directed by Chuck Lorre (of Big Bang Theory fame).

Bacharach says: “There may be four or five from the original (album). You can’t take the whole lot and put ‘em into the show. If they don’t carry the story forward, they don’t go in.’’

Costello told The New York Times this week that “I’m a finger painter compared to him (Bacharach)’’ but Bacharach regards the polymath muso as a kindred spirit.

“He’s truly brilliant,’’ he says. “A different way of writing words to me. More cerebral.’’

I saw this show at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark, in the summer, when it was still called "What's It All About? Bacharach Reimagined". Reviews then were lukewarm, Daily Telegraph but it was a pleasant enough evening for fans of Burt. Burt even recorded the message they played at the start of the show asking the audience to switch off their mobile (cell) phones.

The staging and the interpretations of some of the songs were quirky, but rather that than anything too reverential.

The show has now transferred (with a different title) to the West End, where it could run a while. The production I saw did not feature any PFM songs (IIRC), which was a shame, but with Bacharach you have so many hits to choose from, so why mine a recent collaboration which your average West End audience won't know...

I think the success of this show should encourage US producers that tickets for a Bacharach musical would sell, which can only be a good thing in terms of getting PFM to open.

We will never see Painted From Memory, A Face in the Crowd, or any of the other alleged EC musicals. Here's hoping he releases an album or two with all the songs that were slated for the musicals.

No further news about the musical, but Diana and Elvis invited Burt in San Diego during Diana's tour: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/ent ... story.html

Diana Krall draws three legends to her San Diego concert at Humphreys

Diana Krall drew not one, not two, but three legends to her often sublime Tuesday night performance at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay in San Diego. She acknowledged the first prior to launching into the first of her three encore numbers.

“I don’t usually get to meet the writers whose songs I perform,” Krall said, before telling the audience just how excited she had been to spend time with Burt Bacharach. “I’ve been verklempt all day!”

Krall and her ace band then launched into “The Look of Love,” the 1966 Bacharach/Hal David song that became a 1967 hit for Dusty Springfield and, in 1970, Isaac Hayes. It was also the title track to Krall’s chart-topping 2001 album.

Upon completing “The Look of Love,” she noted that “the writer of this next song is also here tonight.” Without naming him, she then launched into a stunning version of “Almost Blue,” a 1982 gem by her husband, Elvis Costello.

She introduced Costello by name — his exact location in the venue was unclear — after the song concluded, adding with a sly wink to him: “I’ll see you later tonight!”

Krall’s final encore was another Bacharach/David classic, “Walk On By,” which won a 1965 Grammy Award for Dionne Warwick.

Costello and Bacharach are, incidentally, longtime collaborators who teamed up for the 1998 duo album, “Painted From Memory.” In recent years, the two and Chuck Lorre have been working on a musical adaptation of “Painted” that they hope will be Broadway-bound.

Krall received impeccable musical support throughout her Humphreys’ concert from guitarist Anthony Wilson, former North County violin master Stuart Duncan, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Karriem Riggins.

Their extended version of former San Diegan Tom Waits’ red-hot “Temptation” was so transcendent it elevated the concert to another musical dimension.

Equally impressive was Krall’s deeply moving solo rendition of Allen Toussaint’s 1975 chestnut, “Southern Nights.” She dedicated it to Glen Campbell, who died Tuesday and whose 1977 version of the song topped no fewer than three different Billboard charts.

As for the third legend on hand Tuesday, Krall did not introduce him. But he stood out regardless, despite remaining seated, as is typically the case for San Diego basketball legend Bill Walton.

Fun fact: In 2012, Walton came up on stage at Humphreys, where he added enthusiastic vocal support to Costello’s version of the Grateful Dead’s “Ramble On Rose,” a song performed at longtime Deadhead Walton’s request.
