North Sea Jazz July 8, 2004 - ' May Flame Burns Blue' show

Post by sweetest punch »

Just got back from The Hague.

What must I say: the Metropole Orchestra is a fantastic Jazz Orchestra. They have a vital sound with a lot of finesse.

About 80% of the people were older business people with their wives, dressed in 'gala-dresses', problably unknown to any EC song and having an alcoholsmell from the businessdiner.

These songs were played:
Upon a Veil of Midnight Blue
Clubland (salsa version)
Punishing Kiss
Forbidden Playthings
Dust (EC took his guitar for a great riff)
The Favourite Hour (great)
Almost Ideal Eyes (Fantastic - The orchestra copies the arrangement from the record)
Still
Can You be true
My flame burns blue - New lyrics ??
That' s how you got killed before (swinging)
Deep Dark Truthfull Mirror
Watching the Detectives (also great)
God give me strength
Life is wonderfull??? (a Charles Mingus one)

The order isn't correct and I might have forgotten one or two, but it was a great evening.

Clubland (salsa version) sounds interesting.
It nearly took a mircacle to get you to stay
It only took my little finger to blow you away.

Sounds like a really great night, nice selection of EC favourites (would have loved to hear Almost Ideal Eyes with orchestra) and I enjoy Belgium a lot. Looking forward to playing a punk festival there myself (no orchestra) in two months.

He plays Put Away Forbidden Playthings a lot when there's sheet music around, but he's never officially released it himself, has he?

Unfortunately I couldn't listen to the radio yesterday and tape the concert, but I did see (and hear) a fantastic performance of Episode Of Blonde on Television. If it al was that good, I'd love to have a bootleg of it (and if not, then at least of that song)! :D

I saw a great coverage of the show on the TV (ned. 3) last night. We saw Elvis perform 3 songs live (almost ideal eyes, speak darkly my angel - unknown to me- and episode of blonde), we saw him during a rehearsal with the metropole orchestra (almost ideal eyes) an there was also an interview.

Tonight I'm going to the Cactus festival in Brugge (Belgium) where he will be headlining. For me, it's a bit special, my 10th Costello show in my live. The first was in Brussels, 1979.

North Sea Jazz Festival: July 9

Another pair of terrific shows. The orchestra was again in top form -
swinging away. Soloists were great especially the trombonist. A few
surprises as well. I got setlists for last night as well as the first
night. Interesting on the first set list there's also listed at the bottom
'Brooklyn Philharmonic Concert (second half)'. I won't leak anything but it
looks like you'll get a couple of sweet surprises :-). I'll scan and post
some stuff at some point for those who care.

Here's the setlists from July 9:

First set:
Instrumental (Barcelona)
Upon A Veil of Midnight blue
Clubland
Someone Took The Words Away
Still (Lee Konitz joins Elvis)
Deep Dark Truthful Mirror
Put Away Forbidden Playthings
Dust
My Flame Burns Blue (Blood Count)
Hora Decubitus
Encore: God Give Me Strength

Second set:
Instrumental
Favourite Hour
That's How You Got Killed Before
When Did I Stop Dreaming?
Can You Be True?
Almost Ideal Eyes
Speak Darkly, My Angel
When Green Eyes Turn Blue
Watching The Detectives
Episode of Blonde
Encore: Almost Blue

A few notes
Speak Darkly, My Angel had a little story about a widow considering pushing her gigolo out the window and Elvis said is was the first time he's ever performed it. Funny song. Episode of Blonde -- I love love love this one.
At one point the entire violin section was giggling like crazy. I didn't
notice if it was the lyrics or Elvis spit on someone ;-). Still wearing the
pendant necklace and sparkly shoes. Almost Ideal Eyes is wonderful anyway but this arrangement is terrific. Clubland has yet another new life with time changes and what not. Nicely done. Funny to watch the orchestra on some of EC's numbers like Blonde and Dust. Some got it and some didn't ;-).
Again, this is one hot orchestra. They do big band fabulous and also the
straight orchestral arrangements. Almost Blue: EC stated that a beautiful
blond stole it from him but he borrowed it back for one night.

.
Highlights overall: Hora Decubitus, God Give Me Strength (always), That's
How You Got Killed Before (that little Elvis video got stuck in my head
however ;-)), Almost Ideal Eyes, Episode of Blonde, Clubland, Speak Darkly, My Angel.

Speak Darkly, My Angel followed Almost ideal Eyes at New York's Beacon Theatre in August '95 too. It's on the Back With A Vengeance 2 bootleg, and yes, it's really good.

Less enthusiastic review of one of the shows on July 9th, extracted from a longer article posted by Jacques Los on 16 July 2004, from a good-looking Dutch Jazz blog called "Turn Your Ears" (Draai om je oren):

The article is helpfully archived here.

Or in "English" via Google translate:

"Friday night it was already firmly bite. The false-crowing, the trivial presentation and childlike, musical-like songs of Elvis Costello were toe-curling, Santana played friendly and slick pop music, the blues always easy and good to sell, coupled with the age-old blues musician, in this case, Buddy Guy, of course lacked even not even a glimpse of the Jaco Pastorius Big Band and that was the first evening with direct reports from the North Sea - please note - JAZZ Festival. "

Van Elvis Costello verscheen begin 2022 zijn 32ste studio-album The Boy Named If.
