When the Georgia Straight catches up with him, he is putting the last touches on a new album to be called Charlie Haden Family and Friends: Ocean of Diamonds. The record features the bassist-composer with his wife, singer (and producer) Ruth Cameron, son Josh Haden, and triplet daughters Petra, Rachel, and Tanya. (The last named is better known to some for having married Jack Black.) Other performers onboard include Metheny, Vince Gill, Béla Fleck, Rosanne Cash, and Elvis Costello.(...)

Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

From Elvis' journal ( about the Spectacle tv shows)-

http://www.elviscostello.com/web/guest/ ... urce=27665

What I can be absolutely sure about is that we have had a big time playing the musical numbers that announce and conclude the shows. Any time I can share as stage with the Imposters and musical guests such as Allen Toussaint and James Burton, is fine by me.

It was a little more surprising to find myself singing a Hank Williams song in a line-up that consisted of Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny and James Burton, with Pat deferring to James to take the lead.

Charlie is making a terrific record with his daughters, Petra, Tanya and Rachel and, his son, Josh, continuing the tradition of the Haden Family Band. He was playing in his parent's hillbilly band at the age of two, long before his work with Ornette Coleman, Hank Jones, Quartet West or Liberation Music Orchestra.

It seems he thought well enough of our SPECTACLE rendition of "You Win Again", to ask me to sing it in the studio a couple of days later.

Jazz legend Charlie Haden returns to his roots for his latest album, Ocean of Diamonds.

He changed the shape of jazz playing with the original Ornette Coleman Quartet in the late 1950s, and went on to record some of the most seminal albums in music with artists like John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett, and Pat Metheny, as well as his own provocative Liberation Music Orchestra and noir-tinged Quartet West, garnering over 15 Grammy nominations, four Grammys, and accolades worldwide.

Haden began his musical career when he was just two years old, singing on the radio with his parents and siblings in the late 1930s. Like , similar groups the Carter Family and the Delmore Brothers, The Haden Family traversed the mid- and southwest, performing on some of country's biggest radio stations, from WSM in Nashville to KWTO in Springfield, MO.

Now, in 2008, Charlie Haden has fulfilled his dream to play the Haden Family songs with his wife, children, and close friends in the worlds of both country and jazz. The result is 'Ocean of Diamonds,' due out via Decca Records on September 23. The album includes 19 songs ranging from traditional country to contemporary Americana.

Along with jazz partner Pat Metheny, Charlie's friends making an appearance include such luminaries as Vince Gill, Bruce Hornsby, Ricky Skaggs, Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello, Dan Tyminski, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush and many more.

Charlie's family is the main focus of the album, with his wife Ruth Cameron and all four of his children and son-in-law making an appearance. Charlie's son Josh, a former Restless Records Artist with his band Spain, lends his voice to his mellow ballad “Spiritual," which Johnny Cash also recorded. His wife Ruth, a former Verve recording artist, sings the Irish ballad “Down by the Salley Gardens." His triplet daughters Petra, Tanya, and Rachel are featured on several tracks as well as lend their impeccable harmonies behind Ricky Skaggs and Dan Tymknski. Petra is a former member of the Decemberists and has been performing with Sean Lennon, Ricky Lee Jones and the Foo Fighters of late; Rachel was a founding member of indie-rock pioneers The Rentals and is currently on tour with Todd Rundgren; Tanya plays in several independent bands around Los Angeles and is married to actor/musician Jack Black, who gives a stirring rendition of “Old Joe Clark".

Caught the Charlie Haden Family & Friends "debut show" at the 25th Roots of American Music Festival at Lincoln Center in NYC last night.

No EC appearance but none was expected (Did see Beck in the crowd during the earlier set by The Knitters)

The set consisted entirely of material from this forthcoming album. It was really enjoyable and consisted to some incredible playing, aside from a few rough edges on vocals.

The band was led by Charlie and included his wife and children in various combinations on vocals as well as others such as Dan Tyminski, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Bryan Sutton

And all for free!!

They had a postcard of the album cover which if I get a chance I'll post
I too am a limited, primitive kind of man

Hear Elvis 'n co. here -

Skip on to track 7, You Win Again -

A measured, slightly croaky vocal by Elvis , bringing a suitable poignancy to the song. The next track ,The Fields Of Athenry (featuring Petra Haden ) , serves to remind me of another version Elvis did of 'Again on Irish tv back in 1987. A version with Flip City is 'out there' also. Martin tells me he'll give you all a treat and post soundfiles of both later.

I wasn't sure about some of the personnel details of the 1987 Sessions backing band. A mutual friend relayed my query to Donal Lunny and he has sent me this corrected line-up-

Donal Lunny,
bouzouki and keyboards
Steve White , Noel Eccles percussion
Tony Molloy , bass guitar
Arty McGlynn, acoustic guitar
Damien Quinn , bodhran
Cormac Breathnach, flute
Seán Óg Potts , uileann pipes
Nollaig Casey , fiddle

Elvis Costello sounds appropriately beaten on You Win Again.

Elvis Costello knocks You Win Again out of the park.

Indeed.

Requiescsat in pace/in all languages old or new-thoughts for all good.

Oddly enough, I started buying/enjoying CH vinyl 'Ballad Of The Fallen' when I realised he virtually had the same name as I .

Soulseek it is rumoured for about 6/whatever years sometimes has various DPAM YWA shared to sharers.

I liked this performance from an early Spectacle program with Pat Metheney. Mr. Haden was a good soul-not just an accomplished musician but an engaged citizen of the world who was not afraid to speak his mind and advocate for causes important to him:

This makes me awfully sad. I hadn't realized he was unwell. Was definitely one of the greats and will be missed.
