Wise Up: Thought Remixes And Reworks

Post by And No Coffee Table »

This has been mentioned in the main Wise Up Ghost thread, but it probably should have its own thread.

MusicTAP reports:
Blue Note Records have an LP set of Wise Up: Thought Remixes And Reworks from Elvis Costello And The Roots, on December 17.
A CD version is also listed on Amazon (with the abbreviated title "Wise Up: Thought Rem" and no release date) and AllMusic (with the title "Wise Up Ghost Remix EP" and a December 3 release date).

rightbrain speculated on the other thread that the "Thought" in the title is The Roots' resident rapper Black Thought, who did not appear on the original Wise Up Ghost but perhaps will be heard on the remixes.

I'm excited about this!

One of the most fun things about being a Costello fan is the extra stuff that comes out-- people complain about some of it, but I love it.

CRUEL SMILE might not be anybody's favorite Costello record, but it was fun to have a thing like that come out that collected the various b-sides and obscure tracks like his two covers of "Smile" or "When I Was Cruel No. 1." The "Blunt Cut" remix of "Episode Of Blonde" is a track I value as highly as the album version.

I'm glad they're going to keep the WUG train going beyond its initial burst of publicity and enthusiasm, and I wouldn't be surprised if this album has at least a new track or two (after all, didn't they say that they did about 20 songs and then picked the best ones, or something to that effect?

I wonder if they cut a studio version of Ghost Town.

I'm sure this will be better than those awful remixes that accompanied the Four Singles in July from All This Useless Beauty.

Wise Up Ghost Remixes ? Wouldn't that be a cover of a cover, or as Elvis once said, "A parody of a pastiche ?"

Elvis Costello & the Roots: Questlove’s Pipe Dream Isn’t Over

(...)
If you're already hip to the album, which was released in mid-September, there's good news. More music from the pairing is on the way. Roots drummer and co-leader Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson tells us that there will be a new release by Costello & the Roots on the Black Friday version of Record Store Day, fitting since it was on the annual springtime celebration of independent record stores that first saw the release of Wake Up Ghost as a limited-run while label test pressing. "We got something really special coming for that day," he says. And that's not all, Questlove tells us that their live performance at the Brooklyn Bowl on Sept. 16, the eve of the album's official release, "really opened up a whole new good can of worms," hinting there may be even more to come.
(...)
Record Store Day Black Friday will be on November 29, 2013. It's a safe bet the new release will be the Remix album: http://www.elviscostellofans.com/phpBB3 ... f=2&t=9997

I raised a question in another thread which I don't think was answered. Was there any reason why Black Thought was not involved in Wise Up Ghost? This release will be interesting. I wonder if his version of any of the songs will be released here.

i do indeed enjoy PUPPET too, but i surely think both MY NEW HAUNT & CAN YOU HEAR ME could both have been wildly remixed of the 3 bonus cuts. :? :? either way, NO COMPLAINT here. another slab of EC vinyl always welcome here. :)

Nothing?

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertai ... sts/70307/

15 Oct. '13

(extract)

With Costello in charge of the record's lyrical content, Black Thought, The Roots' lead vocalist and rapper, is notably absent from proceedings, a gap that's irked some Roots fans and critics alike. "No one raps at any point," observed critic Jayson Greene in a lukewarm review for Pitchfork, "which seems like a missed opportunity to make something unusual happen." That wasn't part of the plan, Costello says ("there was no masterplan, it was all sort of in response to the material"), but simply how things naturally unraveled.

"The last thing anybody wanted to do—as Quest was quite concerned—was for people to perceive this as 'My Rap Album' or some affectation that was ill-advised," Costello explained. "Black Thought’s just too good to be a bit part player on a record. And there are other records the Roots have made in which he doesn’t appear."

Plus, the prodigious emcee will be appearing on a collection of Wise Up Ghosts remixes set to appear in November. Costello had nothing to do with its making.

Elvis Costello & The Roots - Wise Up: Thought

Image

Artists Announce Release of Remix EP on Record Store Day - November
29th

Elvis Costello and The Roots have announced the release of Wise Up:
Thought – Remixes and Reworks. The collection serves as the remix EP
companion to the album Wise Up Ghost, the genre-defying collaborative
tour de force from Elvis Costello and The Roots that was released
earlier this year. The EP will be released as an exclusive CD release as
part of Record Store Days’s “Back To Black Friday” initiative on Friday,
November 29 and available only via the participating independent
retailers
(PRESS HERE to find list of retailers).

On the album, Costello and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson stirred a musical
pot of gumbo, mixing together elements of soul, funk, hip hop, punk, and
afro beat. Wise Up: Thought is a deconstructive plate of their soul stew
and features genre-specific remixes and reworks that play off those
included in the album's sonic landscape.

J Dilla disciple and Stones Throw Records beat maker/drummer Karriem
Riggins contributes four remixes on the hip hop front. Riggins' remix of
"Cinco Minutos Con Vos" features the Roots rapper Black Thought going
toe to toe with Costello as he contributes his own brand of lyrical
wordplay. Daptone Records artist Antibalas (of Fela! the Musical fame)
contributes an afro beat reworking of lead single "Walk Us Uptown” while
Menahan Street Band (a collective featuring members of Sharon Jones and
the Dap-Kings and El Michaels Affair) come with the Memphis-to-Muscle
Schoals slow funk flavor in their rework of the song "Tripwire".

TRACKLIST:

1.CINCO Minutos Con Vos – Karriem Riggins Remix Featuring
Black Thought (4:09)
2.SUGAR Won’t Work – Karriem Riggins beat
interlude (0:49)
3.Come The MEANTIMES – Karriem Riggins Remix (3:40)
4.The PUPPET Has Cut Its Strings - Karriem Riggins beat interlude (0:50)
5.TRIPWIRE – Menahan Street Band Rework (3:31)
6.VICEROY’S Row – Karriem Riggins beat interlude (1:22)
7.Walk Us UPTOWN – Antibalas Rework (Chico Mann Edit) (5:56)

Wise Up: Thought was produced by longtime Roots associate, Steven Mandel together with Elvis Costello, and Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson.

Hopefully, this new store, Rough Trade NYC, will carry Wise Up: Thought on Record Store Day.

Records Are Dying? Not Here

When it opens on Monday, Rough Trade NYC — a branch of the London shop that has been an independent tastemaker since 1976 — will be the biggest record store in New York City, an ambitious bet on CDs and vinyl at a time when thousands of other music retailers have closed, and the music industry over all looks to a largely digital future.

Anyone pick one of these up yet?

I have a friend out looking for a copy for me this morning since I'm stuck at work, so we'll see if my usual poor luck with RSD releases has finally changed!
